  1. Read this it may well be the cause if the switch is ok (though it does sound like the switch!) http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=12088
  2. Yes you will have broken the tape inside the rotary coupler behind the steering wheel if it has gone more than about a turn too far in either direction. A new one costs about £200 odd easy to change (wheel off unplug plug in wheel on) but F expensive!
  3. On some you press the 1 preset so the display read 1xxx then use the up/down freq keys to set the number, press 1 again to store, then do the second number with < > keys press 1 to store then the third etc etc
  4. The diff will most likely only be either 4.7:1 Series diff or a standard 3.54:1 and you should be able to tell the difference between them using the prop revolutions: 10 wheel revs will either produce 35 or 47 prop revs. Counting the pinion and crownwheel teeth is of course the "correct" way but unless you have a "special" there are only two factory diff ratios and the vast majority of diffs out there will be the 3.54:1 which is what has been fitted in all 90/110/Defender, RR and Discovery vehicles.
  5. Manual to auto is relatively easy (I have done one on my own), the other way round is more of a pain because of needing to change pedal box etc and to be honest I would sooner change the car.
  6. Depends on the type of radio, the newish C42 radiocassettes just use two allen keys (2.5mm IIRC) no special tool required.
  7. Disconnect battery and leave for 30 min or so (the book says 10 I think but I am careful!) and the airbag system will discharge. Wearing non-static clothing (NOT a synthetic fleece for example!) you can undo the two torx screws that go through from the back of the wheel and remove the bag, the connector just pulls off. You can then straighten the wheel by 1 spline and it should be about right I guess. Do NOT switch the ignition on with the bag disconnected or you will trigger a fault code and a flashing warning light which can only be reset by a trip to a dealer and a conversation with Testbook. When reconnecting the battery and switching the ignition on I always stand outside the car the first time but never had one go blooey yet
  8. How old is the Discovery? I have a feeling that 200Tdi wheels are the same as old 90/110 four spoke wheels but 300Tdi Discovery wheels are different, though I stand to be corrected...
  9. You can because there is a vehicle here that had one fitted but I can't recall where he got the bumper from... it might have been First Four Offroad. The other thing I would say is that the suspension on the Discovery will need serious uprating as the 8274 is a heavy winch and will flatten the front springs considerably, a Discovery is prone to bottoming out at the best of times off road so you will need to look at it I think.
  10. 1. Oi who are you callin' Bogbrush, ruddy cheek Barking mader 2. Ah yes the Warranty dispute the pictures of the "adjustments" I made to the design are in there somewhere 3. Send me one of your HD ones to try? Yes the original still lives albeit not the same shape and with the strengthened spade, I must admit I haven't used it for quite a while, haven't been stuck anywhere for a couple of months, spend too much time playing out in the boat on nice days but I suppose I will have to go and "Christen" the new 110 at some stage Forget about "hammer in and rope together type" stakes in the ground if it is remotely interestingly soft as they are a complete waste of time. The screw into the ground ones are just about as useless unless the ground is much, much too hard to get stuck in/on, unless you want to make lots of "imitation boreholes" from pulling them out and then break your/somebody elses/a horse's ankle in them.
  11. I would have thought it would have been quicker, safer, probably cheaper and altogether more convenient to plant a load of explosives around the bottom and stand well back
  12. That sounds about right - my father's other half has got a late 200Tdi 90 with rear disc brakes and according to the parts listings there were about 9000 Defenders built to this spec from LA930xxx (forget the exact number) to LA939xxx then it went to MA (1995MY) and the 300Tdi.
  13. Down south? You don't know the meaning of south None at all really down south
  14. Interesting I always thought the Defender name came in with the 200 but I guess not
  15. If it is a post 1996 Discovery with a two button remote then it has a factory immobiliser and the ECU is stowed away behind the dash down on the passengers side IIRC. Try and nick it with just the key, that should tell you if there is an immobiliser fitted
  16. Get a six point impact socket rather than the conventional 12 point one, thats what I use. Has never failed to shift any wheel nut yet
  17. I'm (still) rather pleased I just got a new 300Tdi No cooling problems there (except possibly too much cooling on a cold morning!)
  18. Some of the Td5s I have driven are about as obedient as a fish with regard to obeying the instructions issued by the driver via his "driver demand sensor" (who thought of that stupid term?)
  19. I'm going to order a Lodar wireless remote for the new 110 because the Milemarker one is a bit poo and sometimes gets a bit flaky at middling to long range which can be annoying as that is where I often use it for pulling in the ground anchor. I see the Lodar 9000 is supposed to be waterproof - has anybody tested this (tested as in parked their vehicle in a river)? is it really waterproof? The base unit is supposed to be IP67 which is completely water and dust proof, and the remote is IP65 which is dust proof and splash proof (IP classifications here) but I wondered if this was true. The best place to put it would be under the bonnet as that is where the solenoid pack is located and should offer the best reception, second choice is under the drivers seat as I have taken the power feed from the underseat fuse box and the wired remote socket is in the front of the seat base - but both of those places will/might get wet and obviously there is not a lot of point having a winch that can run underwater if the controller is broken PG Winches seems to be the cheapest at £160 ex vat.
  20. I would think a more straightforward mod would be to turn up the boost on the std turbo which would have the same effect? The limitation is on the durability of other parts of the engine rather than the turbo, I think. I think some of the Td5 turbos talk to the ECU (or rather the ECU controls the turbot) in which case it wouldn't really be practical.
  21. I can ship stuff here with my eyes shut but not sure about across the Pond sorry
  22. I still haven't used them myself but we sell loads of them at work. As for performance - it depends who you listen to. Some people say they are the next best thing to a set of Continentals (what you folks would call dumper tyres - tractor grip) others say they are not as good as a "regular" MT (e.g. the old 834 pattern or BFG MT's). I even know somebody who thought they were rubbish, thought they were great and now thinks they are rubbish again Mind you the requirements down here are different to UK type off road conditions so I don't know how they would perform in harder conditions. And before anybody points it out I know my new vehicles looks nothing like the above
  23. The full rig on the road B) Even the boat trailer has MT's on
