It is normally only a bad regulator that will over charge a battery, the hissing is indicative of that, however you say the other battery was fine? If so then I suspect you just had a battery go bad on you, perhaps shorted internally which caused the heat and then hissing.
As for a monitor, any of the really cheap things are fine, it is only measuring voltage after all, e.g. 12V-60V Car Motorcycle Marine Battery capacity indicator monitor Voltmeter Meter | eBay

Yup, there is a sensor... 6 pointed star inside the tail housing.... Never needed it but as we know there's quite a few variants of loom/ECU out there.
The BW box is very strong in all honesty, and muuuuch quieter than the LT230.
If you have your old one, I suggest a new chain and viscous and bolt it in.
An LT230 conversion is fine, but more work than you think, including handbrake fiddling, linkage, maybe even cutting a bit out of the tunnel for the lever.
They have got better in recent times, with proper cases and some PnP offerings:

Their plugs appear better on some of the offerings than the MS D37.
Agreed, Arduino looks great, but 'just' builds on the MS stuff very heavily, including using Tunerstudio etc, so the differences can't be that wild.
The hardware, as Fridge suggests, seemed much less developed than even a MS1 V3, I don't see the benefit.
A weak thermostat, very common even in new items, can do this.
Or could just be the heater is being overcome by all the draughts....
