  1. As before, im not an expert on this engine........ But... Some engines have an arrow on the piston crown. If thats the case, then they usually face forwards. Do you actually have the workshop manual? It will be an invaluable source of info
  2. The RV8 slipped liner prob is generally accepted as being caused by overheating. This in turn tended to be caused by LR's requirement to run the engines lean in order to meet emissions regs... Ive built a 4.6 from a spanking new block and do not expect any probs as it will be running cool, and be getting plenty of fuel. If i was building from a 2nd hand unknown block i would have used top-hats. Out of curiosity, what reason were you given for not using liners??? Ive heard nothing but good things about them... Meant to add: There were 3 different thicknesses of blocks, marked by paint from LR. Red, Yellow, Blue (i think). The one you want is Red.
  3. To be honest, this is more through cost of design/production rather than operational effectiveness. The same way as mass-produced cars went in favour of macpherson strut rather than double wishbones. It wasnt because macpherson was better. Far from it. It was because its cheap. If anyone had driven a car with fully independent double wishbones you will know how superior they are... I know design parameters are different on a 4x4, but that aside the advantages are just the same.
  4. Actually, now that im able to open the link and see different views/models, it is kinda growing on me a bit too..
  5. True, but at least defenders arent ugly to start with. Unlike this. Though i guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder
  6. Yep, an ugly duckling it may be (imo) but independant double wishbone is as good as it gets
  7. Snagger i think you have misunderstood me. Im not taking insurance into consideration. If anyone wants to buy a modified vehicle, im presuming they have had the foresight to research insurance issues beforehand! The point ive been (repeatedly) making is that i wouldnt let minor modifications put me off buying a 1st time LR. Now. Im sure ive seen a wall round here somewhere i can bang my head off.....
  8. Sam, from looking at your engine bay, im thinking your new username should be Mr Muscle.......
  9. Like i said. Im not overly familiar with this engine. Thats why i couldnt say which way. But your symptoms supported incorrectly fitted caps
  10. Ahhhh, I see. Yep. Caps on wrong way is where my money is....
  11. Regardless. If it turned ok after you loosened the big ends, then thats your problem. If the big end bearings were correct size they should not be marked at all. Im no expert on this engine but some engines have big end caps that sided. Ie it matters which way round they are?
  12. If it was tight when you built it, that was a hint that something wasnt right. Are you 100% sure you got the correct bearings?
  13. I would tend to err towards repairing your own engine properly over spending money on a 2nd hand replacement that may also need some work... Just a thought.
  14. Just how bad can you set about fitting slightly larger tyres/wheels? There really isnt much to bugger up. Same with a slight suspension raise. Like i said i get the argument but each to their own i guess. Also, a standard vehicle really should be inspected as thoroughly as a "modified" vehicle, so if any modification was done to a point of being dangerous, it really should be noticed anyway.
  15. I totally get the argument of getting a standard vehicle over modded. But lets face it, theres as many dodgy standard vehicles that wouldnt have a hope in hells chance of going through a legit mot as there are modified ones... You pays yer money, you takes yer choice..........and chance!
  16. Well im going to buck the trend and not echo anyone.... I dont see anything wrong with buying a 1st vehicle thats had some modifications done. So long as there sensible and not too "extreme". Ie no big 35" tyres, or huge suspension lifts etc. I dont see a problem with you buying a vehicle with slightly bigger wheels/tyres and 1" or 2" lift etc. But thats just me.
  17. ^^^^ What he said ^^^^ I had exactly the same thing happen to me several years back on a Ford V6. Guy had used undersized bearings by mistake.. Though how he failed to notice this ive no idea. You'd have thought he would spin it over by hand after torquing up the bottom end??
  18. ^^^ What he said ^^^ Additionally, for the record, thats something they would 'spank the monkey' over on Defender2 more than here i think you'll find.....
