  1. Les, how does yours fare with wheel nuts? Any idea of the model number? Thanks,
  2. Haha so I'm not the only one to have done that I just want a bit more POWER
  3. Thanks for the advice guys, I think I'll go find some gravel at the weekend
  4. Hello All, I have been looking at 1/2" drive cordless rattle guns for a while now, firstly 'cos they're handy when you're away from home, but also 'cos I am getting pee'd off tripping over airlines in the garage all the time. Oh and my compressor struggles too. What models do you use and are they any good? I would like something that can cope with removing a tight LR wheel nut and other large bolts, which seems to be a lot to ask of some of the cheaper models out there. I have looked at Sealey, Clarke, Draper and many similar priced brands for anything between £100 and £250 but I'm not convinced (based on various reviews online) that they'll live up to their claimed performance. Battery quality seems to be variable too. Snap-on and the like really are out of my price range, I am not a pro user. I have also looked at the Milwaukee 28V gun that Screwfix have on clearance currently. With the 10% off vouchers I keep getting it's still £370 which is big money for a DIY tool. There's a number crop up on ebay second hand, mostly Snap-on and Facom stuff, but they still go for high prices, and they are of course always a gamble. Recommendations please gents.... make, torque (claimed) and £ would be good. Thanks in advance.
  5. Err, there was no shortage of welly - 2nd high and boot full of revs got a lot of mud up the doors Colin's suggestion of all wheels spinning preventing slip detection sounds possible, just surprised if they all began spinning together but ya never know... I seem to recall reading in magazines about lots of clattering from the clever under bonnet stuff when it operates. Or is that just journalistic license?
  6. I was called to rescue another member of the family today. My mother had got her 110 stuck in a rather wet fields with a stock trailer full of sheep attached. The 110 is a 2006 Td5 model with traction control and ABS. It only has the factory fitted 235/85x16 General Grabber APs, so not great in this situation anyway. I did manage to drive it out eventually with plenty of right foot, having unhitched the trailer, but I was not convinced that there was much help coming from the TC. I was under the impression that there would be some audible signs of the TC doing its thing, but none were heard. What evidence should I expect to prove that it's working? The TC light on the dash was lit up. Diff lock was engaged too, tried high and low box. As the 110 will soon be 3 years old I would like to have any malfunctions fixed before the warranty expires. TIA
  7. The problem you describe sounds symptomatic of the vapouriser freezing up. I have found in the past that if I welly it up the road on LPG before the engine is warm enough it will die. Generally this only happens in cold weather and in the first minute or two from startup. The position of the vap. in the engine bay can make a difference (varying cold ram air flow) as to how susceptible it is to this problem. Also check you don't have an air lock in the cooling system. The vap. relies on coolant to warm it up and prevent a freeze up.
  8. A mere 125,000 on my 1986 V8 90. I've put 85,000 of that on in the last 15 years as my daily driver
  9. Yes, unless you change address. You are legally obliged to inform DVLA of your current abode. Moving house was the only reason I have a photo card license. Now I'm stuck with one It was only brought to my attention recently of this expiry business. I had always assumed the 70th birthday bit still applied.
  10. Excellent idea Nige. Roll cage paint is very shiney too
  11. If you Google Hiren's Boot Disk you should be able to dl for free a complete kit of disk utilities that can run from DOS or within Windoze. Just have to copy it all to a bootable CD, fairly easy really. It includes programs like Acronis True Image, Norton Ghost, various partition managing tools too. I have this on a disk at work, if you get stuck I'm sure I could copy it to somewhere you could dl from. I can recommend True Image
  12. When I first took my RRC (viscous transfer box) for an MOT, the tester said he could not use the rolling brake tester. Instead he produced what's known as a decelerometer. Basically this is a heavy bit of kit that sits in the passenger footwell while he takes the car for a brief drive outside the workshop and brakes hard. I guess it measures the g-forces involved during braking, a very crude way of measuring the brake efficiency. Apparently there are a lot of modern 4x4s that require this method. My Ninety on the other hand can go on the rollers because it has an open centre diff, and the speed of the rollers doesn't create excessive activity in the diff. I have never heard of a tester decline to check the brakes in some way or another!
  13. Great idea for sure. What would happen if one was to use the headlamp washer pump connected to the normal jets? I'm thinking more for Defender application. Maybe time to experiment
  14. This alternator is not the Lucas type as shown in the thread Paintman refers to but the later rather less-serviceable type badged as Magnetti Marelli. Ign light was only on when ign key or and when engine running. Definitely no charging at 11.8V with engine running. 12V was present at small wire with ign on, when grounded to engine block the batt light went out, as you would expect. I took the whole thing off, again, checked all the connections, again, nothing obviously amiss. Put it all back together and lo and behold, it works! So it would appear to be some king of wiring gremlin, which is a bad thing, 'cos it'll no doubt crop up again at another inconvenient moment. Oh well, at least it's working now, so I'm happy for now. Thanks to all.
  15. I have had a Warco 2B12 bench mounted drill press for many years now and it has been very good. Not the most robust model available but excellent value for money. 16 speeds are invaluable, mostly because you get the lower spindle speeds. I have successfully drilled 20mm diameter through thick mild steel plate, also a 70mm hole saw although this could have done with running slower. The main thing that stops any bigger drills being used is the limited torque that the drive belt can manage. The table has T-slots rather than through slots for decent clamping, also less messy if you like to use coolant as the table has a drain hole. Having said all this, you can't beat a good old fashioned industrial model with back gears such as the Meddings that my dad has. We converted this to a single phase motor for home use. Keep checking Ebay
  16. Yep, had the thing apart and took the brushes out, they had plenty of life left in them. Springs and wires loooked fine too. Will check the power to the alt later. Thanks
  17. Saturday night the Ninety's alternator light came on suddenly and without warning, and has stayed on. *!:@ and %!$! Just in time to stop me going to Donington on Sunday The unit is a Magnetti Marelli 100A from a serpentine V8 Disco like this I have checked everything I can think of like wires fallen off/broken, battery terminals tight, drive belt intact and alternator turning, brushes OK, charge lead is secure at alternator and starter motor ends, multimeter definitely shows no sign of charging. I am guessing that some kind of rectifier pack is to blame but I cannot find any reference to replacement items. Does anyone either have a better idea of what's gone wrong, and or know what is replaceable and where I can get it from. Thanks in advance.
  18. How about some of those Highway Maintenance stickers to accompany the spinny light? Maybe we should wear hi-vis jackets to help with the authorative look Agree with Rick about looking like you own the place/work there.
  19. Thought I'd give it a go. Not been before but last year's reports and pictures looked interesting. Bit of a trek for us southerners though but not as far as from Scotland
  20. For air lifting the truck by its cage to get out of big holes
  21. Vehicle Wiring Products sell PVC beading by the metre.
  22. Nige, Pretty sure I have a few in the garage, will have a look tonight. What are you doing with them?
  23. Mmmm, so, who are you insured with? I know a lot of people that would do business with a company with that kind of attitude
