  1. I think the other difference between an RV and an LS.... is the LS starts at 350bhp before being tinkered with...the RV8 finishes at this. I fully respect Nige for this build, but personally I would have gone down the LS route. G
  2. Got a dry sump pump as well as tank, but will do that on the next build - not this one. G
  3. Which locker is it ? RD 56 ? How old is the locker ?
  4. I wouldn't heat it, there are rubber bushes behind and this will make a mess. I also wouldn't bother with a nut splitter. I doubt you could get a grinder in to cut the nut, maybe a die grinder but i wouldn't - chances are you'll damage the threads on the arm. You just get more power on the breaker bar. I use a torque multiplier on tight stuff, but isn't exactly in your normal tool kit ! G
  5. You either need a bigger bar, bigger guys or both. G
  6. Cheers for the replies Sound pretty positive. So long as the golf will be able to keep up 60mph and follow my ford with the buggy behind then i'll be happy ! Our current tent is pretty big so takes a while to put up ! G
  7. Daan, i disagree with two things above..... 1) we tried the whole loop on each side. it's a pain in the butt to be perfectly honest. having to constantly re-route the rope is more hassle than it's worth. We also found that if the winch was attached onto an anchor point then you moved to another position, you might find that you want it now to be on the other hoop....too late to do now as you're suspended on it already. you also find, that you generally have to attach the centre winch when you've gone past the point of no return - this is not when you want to start fannying about re-routing. 2) afaik Nige has hydraulic milemarker winches....these are no good when upside down and the engine isn't running. (i'm in the same situation) we have at some points used the centre as a front winch either to help the front winch or to help level the vehicle when going up a steep bank - can be used to maintain oil pressure not sure if Nige would hang his vehicle at these sorts of angles but we do. remember if you loose oil pressure and shut down the engine and electric winch is useful. G
  8. Ah ok. I don't think i've got any other pics online, and i'm away at sea at the moment. But the gussets aren't complex. Just a couple pieces of 6mm plate that we've bent to shape and then welded in. Th top plate that the gussets mate up to from below and the doughnut mounts to from above is probably the same or 8mm ( i can't remember!). Devon 4x4 do a similar sort of thing (ish). But not as braced as ours i don't think. Edit : http://www.devon4x4.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage_new.tpl&category_id=1012962&product_id=1901&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=14
  9. Afternoon, I'm thinking about getting a trailer tent - for the simple fact that they're light and can be towed around by anything really. It'd be used for challenges, where i'd get someone to pull it with my Golf TD (i'm assuming this'd be ok ?) I would be looking at a cheap one, so nothing new or fancy ! But what do peopl think of them ? I've never sleapt in one so don't know what they're like... I might see if i can borrow one for the next event just to see. Any tips ? Cheers Gordon
  10. Nige, You will bend your cage down if you mount your doughnut there. So will need a vertical brace. Here is how i've braced and fitted mine. We have not bent it (yet) and it's had a lot of abuse. Some serious pulls on it when we've been without hydraulics for some reason and we're using the centre as a rear winch. Just to give you an idea, my centre winch is a TDS9.5 with a bow 2 - so not exactly a small one G Edit : I clicked the link above and left it opening in another window whilst i wrote this reply ! doh !
  11. generally most cars are insured anyway, so when a trader is out on a service test drive and the police run the details it'll come back as insured (they're non the wiser that is isn't actually the owner driving). if pulled over then it's not a problem to show insurance documents, i've done this in the past. on my trade policy i used to have "Use for demonstation purposes". This allows someone else to test drive the vehicle with me sat next to them. However i've taken that off now to reduce costs. as a trader it still needs to be taxed and mot'd, unless you've got trade plates (tax is on them). G

  13. All i can say is WOW. Using it today in the AWDC NW challenge @ Mow Cop, it's transformed the vehicle. The ability to turn as wanted makes a big difference G
  14. ^^ Where the swivel housing bolts to the axle casing - there is a seal here. This is what's leaking. G
  15. I know it's not a LR, but there are LR's in the background Before : After : 35's fit with no suspension or body lift. Slight bit of rubbing on the inner arch at full lock. G
  16. To put it simply there is a diff in the way going behind. In order to go over the diff would be too close to the sump. To go below the diff would probably be lower than the standard track bar - these we bend quite often. So it's a bit of a non starter. I've had to put my panhard behind the axle in the area you're talking due to lack of space in front. When on the bump stops now, my ram is litterally touching my crank mounted hydraulic pump (my engine is moved back about 6" already). We have a plan to put a protective plate in front of this ram, but we think as it is now is pretty well covered. The plate that it mounts to is 10mm thick and the skid below it is 8mm. We've been jacking the truck up and down on it. I'm more than happy to bounce it off rocks. Yes they are td5 housings as these come with the 'ear' on the drivers swivel hub casing. It's as quick as we turn the wheel. I've only got an 80cc orbital on it at the moment and my 120 which arrived yesterday ....... well that turned out to be an 80 as well (mistake on sellers side!!!) I've never run a standard LR ps pump on this engine, always run a zf74. I was on a disco 2 steering box prior to this. What do you mean whats the setup ? : zf74, 80cc orbital, ram about 60mm bore 35mm ish rod (these figures from memory / guessing), 4 turns lock to lock - hence wanting the 120 or maybe even a 150cc. M20 rose joints. M20 capheads through the rose joints. Total price - £don't wish to add it up ! I'm running a pressure gauge on the dash so i can see how much work the pump is doing. I run a wide offset (scrub radius is miles off!!!) on the front due to the big boggers, meaning that before it was difficult to turn when parked still. With the locker in it was previously impossible to turb. This isn't a problem now. G (p.s. the long M20 caps should be gold plated for the price i ended up paying - £15 ea!!!!!!)
  17. No it doesn't. This'll be because we've used a basic tractor valve not a 'fancy' one.
