reb78
My 200tdi sits at about 80C when running. I know this is about 8C too cool so will change the thermostat, but what harm does it do if any???
Snagger
It'll slightly reduce fuel efficiency and perhaps performance too, but shouldn't have any harm on the engine or oil. The worst effect will be on your cabin heating in winter.
Jocklandjohn
On a related note what should oil temp be for normal running, assuming water temp is ok in the 88/90C region?
Bowie69
It would normally be around the engine temperature unless worked very hard, but up to around 130C would be max limit, when you need an oil cooler.
western
standard stat for Defender spec 200Tdi is 88 degree, so it should sit around that figure when engine is fully warmed & operating the oil stat is stamped 74 degree, mine runs about 80 to 85 when fully warmed up while driving at normal road speeds. Thanks chaps. I'm not sure whats afoot with mine (200tdi replacement for a 19j). Water gauges (in and out of rad) shows 75 to 90 and constant (allowing for stat opening and closing), and the original water temp gauge on dash rises appropriately and sits in middle all the time, but oil gauge shows 105 constant rising to 110 under load, and if ambient is warm its up to 115 under load. I've used an infrared thermometer on the engine when its hot and it shows 85 to 90 so I'm assuming it may be an oil temp reading error. I changed the oil thermostat recently to see if it would rectify this but it still shows the same readings so I'm guessing its not the 'stat. Gauge is a VDO with (AFAIK) the correct sender. Radiator (with integrated oil cooler) is recently renewed quality item all metal so I'm confident its not that. Am I missing something obviosu that would account for apparently higher oil temps?? western
Standard Stat in a 19J TD was 82 IIRC. mine defintely was, oil temp sender sits on front face of oil filter head, mine [200tdi] sits around 80 in normal driving conditions. oil stat only allows oil to the cooler when the stat operates, it won't have any affect on the oil temp gauge. Maverik
Using vdo guage and senders front my madman, I get 89-91 degree causing water temperature and I've had it up to about 97 degrees pushing hard up a steep hill, but it dropped very quickly after. I think I've had it up to 105 on a hot day but that doesn't happen much. Oil temp is around 80 to 110 probably sits about 88 most of the time and is much slower to respond either up or down. Yes I think I need to check this sender is accurate, its been like this since I fitted it, and it seems like its showing too high compared to your readings. 1 hour ago, western said: Standard Stat in a 19J TD was 82 IIRC. mine defintely was, oil temp sender sits on front face of oil filter head, mine [200tdi] sits around 80 in normal driving conditions. oil stat only allows oil to the cooler when the stat operates, it won't have any affect on the oil temp gauge. Aye understand the stat operation, I replaced it because I thought it might have been jammed partially shut and not allowing oil through as its supposed to. Curiously, I found a washer inside the oil stat housing which was obviously deliberately inserted where it shouldn't have been, presumably to alter the stat operation (reduce warm up time?). I didn't replace it.

Hi Maverik can i ask how you have got your oil temperature plumbed in ( if using the madman monitor) ,I also have this monitor(fantastic bit of kit) but not sure where to plumb in the sender and avoid a " colder dead end " to measure from

Hmm! My local LR specialists had never seen one installed before and had no idea what it was for. Land Rovers eh!
Mo Murphy
My 200 now sits at 91-92°C pretty constantly measured on a VDO gauge and sender. Mind you it cost a refurbished head and a new radiator to achieve that. Mo

Jocklandjohn
Ah ok, thats consistent with mine - and new radiator and head too (and water pump)!

Mine too. It's standard, and I think for the very reason you gave. I think it also helps ensure all of the oil goes through the oil cooler when warm, not just part of it. I initially used it, but unhappy with the oil pressures and temperatures compared to my 12J (with the same gauges and a SIII MoD FFR oil cooler), I removed the washer and gained about 5psi for no discernible oil temperature change once stabilised. western
I might try removing that washer on my engine to see if it makes any difference

western
the temp sender will screw in when the blanking plug is removed, that's how mine is fitted
Ex Member
That is correct. the 200TDI (and earlier engines) have a correct location for the oil temperature sender. It is in the path of the oil going into the oil filter housing. The 300TDi oil filter housing does not have the oil temperature port. On my truck with a MadMan gauge, the oil temperature reads a maximum of 7 C higher than coolant temperature when pushed hard for long periods in hot weather. I've also measured the oil temperature going to the cooler separately and can confirm the oil thermostat is fully open at 74 C. It starts to open in the mid 60s. Basically, it is open all of the time, once the engine is warm.
