simonpelly
Hi Folks, Need to replace some cables coming in from the engine bay, through the bulkhead and into the dash. From the engine bay side the grommets and cables are covered by what seems to be some sort of black resin. Which resin/sealant has been used for the job? See attached image (Attached random engine bay shot taken from the web) Many Thanks, Simon... Edited November 15, 2017 by simonpelly
miketomcat
I would use a black mastic of some form. I wouldn't use polyurethane, silicone or any setting sealant as you may need to get it off again in the future. Mike
TSD
I'm not sure what LR used, but you could achieve a similar effect with self amalgamating tape? Beware the cheaper types often become soft and sticky with age, and they aren't especially oil resistant.
western
No sealant listed in my 110 parts book, just the big 3 hole grommet, the flexi sealant used around the rear door glass would do, part number 78159.
Peaklander
In the past I’ve used Dum Dum which is a non-setting sealing compound but it’s no longer available. Notwithstanding Mike’s comment above about not using silicones, I have used Granville RTV which I think is silicone but it seems to pull off / out without a problem if you need to remove it. miketomcat
Silicone will do the job but it causes so many problems later as nothing will stick in it's place. It can never be removed completely! Mike
PaulN
As per Peaklander Dum Dum if you can find it but now I use Soudal 'Car Bond' for this purpose as well: Link Edited November 16, 2017 by PaulN
Piperatsea
CT-1 for everything! Use it mostly for sealing things on boats. It's adhesive so be careful where you use it but round cables should be OK. Silicone also not bad here because it's a poor adhesive but once you use it nothing else will stick. Arbomast butyl is the best non setting sealant but it might sag. Best thing for deck fittings which would also apply to body panels etc
western
Would car body seam sealer work, it doesn't fully cure & can be removed fairly easily.
