kevin50
Noticed another Problem today as well as my Others diesel leaking from Wading plug hole at bottom of Timing Case, didn't know Diesel could get through that way. Had new Timing Belt and Seal not long ago but Suspect Seal, or could it be something else ?
vulcan bomber
The front seal on the injection pump has failed.

vulcan bomber
It's part of the pump, you'll need to remove the pump to replace the seal/send it to a specialist
kevin50
Is this the right Tool I need to remove Pump https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Big-Red-Tools-12-Piece-Land-Rover-Timing-Kit-for-Diesel-Engines-SWE145/321984610886 Edited May 27, 2020 by kevin50
western
Yes 👍 that kit will allow you to remove the pump without removing the timing belt.
reb78
I would replace the timing belt again though if it has been doused in diesel... That looks like a fair leak?

cackshifter
I'm not saying the belt is ok, but they don't seem to mind oil. I have a lathe that has a belt running in the gearbox, under oil, and Honda made a small engine with the timing belt inside.

Wasn't sure to take a chance on the Belt, It was just fitted new couple of months ago with pully and oil seal also new water pump, Has not been ran much since then, maybe 6 or 7 times Idling, and no more then 10 minuets
Snagger
Don’t chance it - the price of a new belt is nothing compared the cost if it slips or fails.
western
I would advise replacing the timing belt Kev, then you know it will not fail due to contamination.
kevin50
Change of Plan, not going for the Tool as wont get it till next week sometime, Mates gonna take cover and belt off to get at it properly, so that way can Check Belt and anything else in there, Called in to Local Diesel Specialist today and he is going to put the Seal in for me if I take Pump to him.
kevin50
Doesn't look to bad in there, Belt was a little wet but has dried out completely now, Gonna spray brake cleaner or something and clean everywhere before putting back together. Pump is at Diesel place to get seal, hopefully ready to pick up tomorrow. Only Diesel No sign of any Oil Leaks.

Mutley
As others have said personally i WOULD change the timing belt! Just for knowing how Diesel can affect rubberized items like seals and such likes, they seem to soften, expand and perish after being in contact with diesels!?! Diesel is a freaky weird substance at times!?! When used in certain situations such us a penetrator or cleaner it's great, but when in contact with certain other components such as rubber and the likes it's quite destructive!?! Just my observations

Just my observations I know Mate, Just trying to save a bit, sick of spending now, hard times anyway. but you are right, my local Landy shop should have one in tomorrow. Another thing I meant to ask, I didn't get the Tool to refit, what size Bolt or Drill Bit is used as the Pin when setting it up ?
western
9.5mm drill bit shank can be used as a timing pin for the injection pump

Snagger
If you can get an old R380 reverse light switch from your local garage, they work well as a flywheel locking tool. They may have a broken one in a bin or a work used one that they’d sell cheaply.
mmgemini
NEVER reuse a timing belt. even a new belt that has been fitted, taken off, then refitted
kevin50
Disaster. We refitted Pump set Timing up as before when we originally changed belt and pulleys, it starts with a bit if a struggle, but chucking loads of Black smoke / Fumes. won't idle Just cut's out. It's like it could be Over fuleing. What have we done wrong ?
Mutley
Did you lock off/secure the fuel pump??? Through the centre of top left sprocket as you look at the engine, it also locks up the timing cycle.
Mutley
Sounds like it wasn't stopped at TDC or it has moved in the process of the refitting???
