V8 - replacement radiator

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Now the weather is starting to warm up a bit, it looks like the cooling system is starting to struggle now that I have fitted a 4.6 - on a day like today after a run at low speed the temp will start to climb, even with both 12" electric fans going shifting a fair volume of air. Rad looks to be original so is probably way past it's best..

Having a search, it looks like the 2.5TD came with the biggest rad, but other than paying OE prices, does anyone have any suggestions on where to get one for at a sensible price? It looks like a few of the budget end of the market (ie. britpart) have got plastic tanks...

Likewise, is there anyone that supplies an off the shelf fan shroud and kit that doesn't rely on poking holes in the rad to mount?

Allisport seem to have a very nice setup, but rad + 2x fans is over £1000...

For my tuned 4.2 when I had it, I used a discovery/rangie 3.9 radiator which has a thicker core. I had  this recored and when they did it made I got them to make the width less so it fits the 90/110 front. I never had any cooling problems after that. I think, I recall that the bottom pipe needs changing to 90/110 style though. I think i sent the old 90 radiator with it so they could make sure the mounts lined up and so they could reuse the bottom pipe connection and from memory it was cheap! Raysons in Taunton did it but was a long time ago.

This gives you the engine oil cooler as well if you need it and old rads can be had for almost nothing and getting it back from being recored it is as good as new.

Did the 5oth edition V8 not use a larger radiator? if so may be use one of those but would imagine you would need a lottery win to buy a new one and second hand they are probably rocking horse s..t!

Stock Defender V8 rad in the ambulance and that has never overheated - the only time the fans have ever come on full speed was thrashing it up an Alp on a blazing sunny day and even then it didn't overheat, it was just warmer than usual.

No oil coolers on it at all, I've got temperature tell-tale labels on the gearbox, transfer box and oil filter and they've never gotten hot.

Local rad place that we've used before is about 30 miles away and don't want to even give a ballpark on pricing for a replacement or a recore without having it on the counter in front of them, which is a PITA as I'd have to take half a day off work to take it there, then collect it again after it's done and the landy is off the road while its being sorted...

Looks like Bearmach do a metal tanked range, including a heavy duty v8 / TD one for a reasonable amount of money.

Bit of an update:

Found another local rad place - £275+VAT for a recore with a bigger core.

Bearmach do a brand new copper cored heavy duty v8 rad for £281 inc VAT - however it's out of stock and due to current issues they don't know when any will be back in store.

Rimmer / Paddock etc have Britpart ones, but I think I'll pass...

Found a very cheap 2.5TD Allisport clone on ebay so have got that, should be here tomorrow so will see how it looks...

i had my Ninety's (3.9) TD rad recored when I realised it had become bunged up. This was done by a lovely chap at Wessex Radiators, who were recommended by Fridge. They are a proper old school type place.
I plumbed the oil cooler in just because the oil lines on the serpentine engine were a direct fit

My 110 (4.2) also has the same type of rad, and doesn't currently make use of the oil cooler. Being a V belt engine it's easy to remove the cooler circuit.

I need to get another recore for mine, was changing the timing belt the other week and I noticed that the fins are beginning to dissolve down the bottom. Falling away at the lightest touch, unfortunately it’s only five years old which is disappointing. I presume it’s the road salt that’s done it.

Not painted probably, or not the correct sort of paint.

When I worked as a paint sprayer at a main dealers in the late seventies, I often had to take radiators for repair. No aluminium back then !

We used two different repairers, and both of them used to immerse the repaired rads in a paint tank. It was always matt black and quite thick, and definately NOT cellulose.

All sadly gone now :(

Jon, I think I've still got my old NA/TD rad sat in the workshop, one of the full width ones with the oil cooler loop in the end tank. It's a proper metal tanked one, not sure if its 100% or whether a hose was leaking but would make a good core to have rebuilt. Assuming I can find it and haven't scrapped it, you're welcome to it.

Hopefully I'm sorted - £130 ebay special alloy rad actually looks very good, and came in a box suggesting it's not a chinese special but from a European rad specialist. If the weather holds I'll try and get it fitted later and will take some pics.. :)
