ZU Rims - Anyone Know Much About Them?

If you want new rims, why not try the Stazworks copies from Straightforward supplies, available in any rim size 15-20", any offset, any PCD and centre, double beadlock with rock rings (urgh gross :( )

The look good for the money

Lewis :)

I'm not personally after new rims (more than happy with my reverse disco steelies at the mo), I just wondered what other's thought of an alloy mach 5 replica.

Your right tho, those rock rings are an aquired taste :blink:

If you dont like the rockrings, you dont have to have them as they are all custom made to order. Failing that, you could design your own. Wether you like the look of them or not, rock rings are a very good idea on beadlocked wheels as the outer edge is more prone to damage running low pressures.

For the record, I have never had, or seen up close a Stazworks wheel. There are another 5 manufacturers of this type of wheel in the USA as well as Stazworks, and we have been working in collaboration with one of them with these new wheels.

My comments about the rims were not meant as an insult/dig, on the contrary I find it commendable that a uk supplier is developing rims, especially if you can deliver (unlike Stazworks it seems).

I too have never seen a Stazworks in the flesh but a friend has and commented that they look very similar, surely saying they look like Stazworks is a compliment anyway?

Do you sell the centers individually? We need to replace the wheels on the car but are changing to 404 axles in a few months so we will need to change the bolt pattern at that point, can this be done?

Also what is the lead time on the wheels?

Regards

Lewis

Interesting rims. Can you do pressed centres? I see the theory behind the rock rings but the only beadlock rims I've seen damaged (a pair on a front axle) also bent track road and drag link Dan bars, bent the panhard rod and ripped the mount off the chassis (wasn't rotten). Have you had any problems with beads being dmamged?

We can do anything you want really, but there might be cost implications depending on what you want.

Lewis, we could do you a wheel with a bolt in centre which you could then change when you changed over to 404 axles, but the problem you will probably get is that you will need to change offset as well when you switch to Mog axles.

Lead times are about 3-4 weeks at the moment, but we can do better if you have got a really good excuse (like LRfun - needs them for ladoga !)

Will, I have seen plenty of beadlocked rims damaged. The problem we still have in the UK is that lots of people are running simex type tires, and these dont flex that much even if you let all of the air out. If you run a tire which will flex properly at low pressure (3-5psi), and you drive hard you will damage the outer bead of the wheel. Rockrings all but eliminate this problem. I have seen wheels without rockrings come back from Eurotrial almost square (seriously, it was the most damaged wheel I have ever seen - I will try and dig a pic out of it). I have a buggy which I use for forestry work as well as playing, and before rockrings we damaged 3 out of 4 wheels on the outer edge. Since rock rings, no damage.

We can do pressed centres, but it will add quite a bit to the cost. Our flat centres are 10mm and certainly on the smaller sizes (15" and 16") this is proving plenty strong enough. On the larger sizes, we will brace the centre anyway.

If anyone has any special order wheels, email me with the details and I will give you a price - tim@straightforwardsupplies.co.uk

Some of the more "extreme" rings look like they could be considered to present a sharp edge, and therefore a danger to other road users? It doesn't seem bright to draw extra attention to an item which has already been mooted as legally 'on the boundary', and rotating sharp edges are definately a no-no.

Thanks Tim, I may be in touch soon.

TC, I'd be more keen on a totally plain ring welded all the way round and then a strip all the way round the inside if the ring welded to both the ring and the rim to give, in effect, a box section bead.
