A good mechanic

Does anybody know of a good mechanic/garage in or around sheffield?

Being a student up north its hard to know where to take the beloved series 3.

Its great fun driving (terrorising) in a city. shame the grand plan of attracting students of the female variety hasn't paid off yet.

I cant see the problem with climbing into the passenger seat in a short skirt!

Anyway. Much appreciate any suggestions (on both mechanics or female students, or both. now that would be a result).

Good point.

I need an MOT, which will probably require some minor work to pass. Fairly easy at home with the local man but not so easy 200 miles from home.

Matt

Do you know what the minor work is?

Why not just book it in early (you can do a month ahead) and see what really needs fixing. As long as the MOT station understands they won't be fixing it they will have no self interrest in any failures.

Heck, a month, you could take it 200 miles to get it fixed (I do if I need workshop facilities).

I started out paying other people to do some of the maintenance on my Range Rover, but quickly came to two conclusions:

1) Land Rover specialists come in two varieties - cheap ones and good ones.

2) It needed far too much attention for my finances to survive using either...

I ended up doing pretty much all the work myself - it's only been into a garage for one job in the last few months, because I didn't have time to fix it before going away for the weekend. The garage made a hash of it and I ended up staying home anyway

Then again, whether you want to take advice from me is another matter, considering my landy is sat on my drive with a dead engine...

A main dealer is £95 ph and that makes them good does it.<_<

My local is £40 and every time I've taken a truck there they cock it up or charge for stuff they havent fitted.(this does not narrow down as the are about four local to me)

The small one man garge that looks after both racers and my Disco 2 is £20 ph and his work is second to non. He alway keeps me fully updated on what the work is and isn't needed (A racer takes a lot of looking after)Stunning

There is a chap in Winchester that is just as good but he does not advertise otherwise he can't keep up with the work.Drovercare

Go on word of mouth its the only way to get a good service ;)

I find flirting with the mechanic helps bring the rates down enormously! But saying that, I have a Haynes manual and this forum, and I don't do too badly...

Matt, do you know the name of the bits that need working on? I always struggle with the names

MM4x4 are used to me now "you know, the bendy thing on the end of the bar that's fixed to the steering"

Matt

I'm at sheffield uni, i was in a similiar situation to you last year.

I was recommended Millhouses Garage, they did the MOT and the welding i couldn't do as the welder was at home 200 miles away.

This year i pre-empted the problem, and put the 90 in for an early MOT before i came back to uni.
