landrover598
Would it be OK to mount my GEW9000 winch rotated through 90 degrees from what it is supposed to be mounted at ? So it looks something like this ( but with the wire coming out the front obvoiusly )
jules
In my limited winch knowledge the bumper could bend unless it is designed to work that way. otherwise it should be OK
minivin
suppose the only thing to check is if it is grease lubed or oil lubed, grease shouldn't cause any isses, but oil may! Problems that may arise with oil is that your breathers go submerged, your lvel plug is now wrong, the filler maybe below the correct level, the gears go above the oil level towhich they are meant to be submerged, oil seals that were designed to just swipe the oil off the shaft now become submerged and may leak et cetera. Other than that, have a look at the mountings and see if they have any particular pattern on strengthening ribs, it may show that you are sending the stress loadings 90 degrees to the designed path
landrover598
I'm pretty sure it's greased lubed as there is no filler/drain for the oil I think the mounting on the wing will be stronger this way as instead of trying to shear the bolts off, it will be in compression. darthdicky
Can you still get to the freespool lever with it mounted like that?
landrover598
The freespool lever is that vertical tab between the g-box and wire drum. It has to be rotated around the g-box by about an inch to disengauge it.
jules
A mate did it and the superwinch bumper face mount started to bend. a HT bolt is stronger that plate when flat if this makes sence

However if you break it, you fix it
honitonhobbit
Dave, The GEW is a copy of the Ramsey RE8000 Yes you can mount it like that - no worries You can turn the clutch/gearbox by 45/90/180 degrees to place the clutch action in a better area (does that sound right) If you need the correct webbing designs for what you are doing, I have them at work
landrover598
You can turn the clutch/gearbox by 45/90/180 degrees to place the clutch action in a better area I didn't know that That was the whole point of turning the winch through 90 degrees so i can get the clutch lever in a better position, so that i can get the winch and bumper as close into the chassis as possible. Any idea how to move it around, before i give it a go and end up with cogs etc all over the floor I've got to go and buy some more steel before i can make the bumper, just getting the design sorted for now. The web designs would be brill, thanks
pritch1
ive seen it done before doesnt seem to be a problem. you have just got to make sure the bumper is braced properly
bishbosh
Dave, If you're mounting feet forward either use extra thick (a la Nige ) plate for the front face of the bumper or add in a return lip. 5 or 6mm plate will bend. Ask me how I know..... mutter mutter.......
landrover598
If i can work out how to rotate the clutch lever by 45 degrees then i'll be able to mount the winch feet down. This will give enough clearance to get the winch close enough to the chassis so that the bumper will be exactly the same as stock but in 6mm
white90
my winch bumper has a 10mm front plate 8mm sides all braced the bumper outside the winch cradle is 5mm
BogMonster
I think you probably need thicker cardboard, that stuff doesn't look up to the job to me
landrover598
I am starting to doubt it's structural properties, especially in this wet climate
landrover598
It's starting to co-operate now After a bit of advice, i've managed to move the freespool lever around by about 30 degrees. The winch will now sit in tight to the bumper with it's feet downwards. The face of the new bumper will be 7" from the chassis crossmember, exactly the same as it is now with a standard bumper.
