bishbosh
The never ending saga of getting the 90 ready to off road continues....with the fabrication of a front bumper. Being a cheapskate I didn't want to fork out loads of cash and also fancied the challenge of making one for myself. I have a TDS with a bowmotor on it. This combination is very long and wont fit between the chassis rails with any sensible clearance. So, I decided to make a bumper with the winch tray level with the top of the chassis rails. Progress so far:
Guest noggy
very nice! can you post up some measurements please?

Bowie69
I can post up the drawings once I find where I stored them..... watch this space. You have drawings????? Things are a-changing at Camp Bish I tell you, what's so wrong with cereal packets? Looking good there, as usual
Orange
You beat me to it, Bowie!! [Trevor MacDonald voice on] In tonight's news, a member of the Cardboard Engineering Squad is missing, presumed converted to allegedly more acurate methods of modelling and construction..." [/Trevor MacDonald voice off] It doesn't look very thick, Bish............give Nige a ring. He'll learn you!!! Edited to add - Don't suppose you would enlighten us as to the source of the SS fairlead, would you?? Got any spare??
bishbosh
Fairlead from Tonk. Don't know if he's still making them..... The winch tray is too thick I'll have you know, but it was somewhat cheap If it makes you feel any better, several cereal packets (mostly Shreddies IIRC ) met their maker in the production of the fabrication drawings. I had to make templates to transfer into CAD for my tame fabricator to cut out and fold for me. Am I allowed back into the fold? (pun most definately intended!! )
bishbosh
Right, The drawing is attached. A couple of things to note: 1. The pieces as drawn all need modification to end up looking like the bits I have welded together above, but all the mods are achievable with a grinder. 2. There are no bolt holes shown. You are on your own measuring your truck and drilling to suit. 3. Apart from the intricate CAD design , no real numbers have been applied to this in terms of strength or fitness for purpose so use at your own risk. If you do use these dims, a small donation to the forum accounts would I am sure be well received. Enjoy! front_bumper_Model.pdf
Cil111
nice bumper... dont want to be cheeky but no one has drawings for an 8274 winch bumper by any chance
bishbosh
Finished! Well, mostly. I have some drain holes to drill, but the fabrication work is done: Then a couple of coats of Hammersh!te and we're good to go
Bowie69
Very nice Bish, purposeful yet not detracting from the looks of the vehicle -I'd be rather proud of something like that if I were you
western
looks rather neat
steve_d
Very nice. Would avoid the Hammerite though as it chips very easily. A good coating of zinc or red oxide primer followed by chassis paint or an enamel would be better. Steve

bishbosh
is it just me or are the bumper ends very thin? (well i know its not me who's thin! But they are closed boxes rather than C sections - much stronger

landroversforever
. sorry for the silly questions bish!
bishbosh
They're not silly questions. If you think about the physics for a minute, the thickness at the end of the bumper is irrelevant really as it will bend at the root of the "wing", not at the tip. As mine are closed boxes rather than c sections, they are much stronger as the compression face is braced and cannot buckle so easily. Consequently, I can use thinner material
landroversforever
ahhhh clever !
