Insurance question

Hi All

Just finishing my 90 rebuild :rolleyes: and thinking about the insuring it it’s 1986 90 with 200tdi retrofitted and td5 axles to give me the disc brakes back and front and a two inch lift.

I am 44 and have been driving 22 yrs with no smashes or bumps but have spent the last 15 yrs with a company car

What would you think I should pay roughly on the basis your experiences?

Also any feedback you have about good or bad companies to get quotes from.

No Idea about how much, but I'd give Footman James a shout. Did me a very good deal, and charged FAR less than Direct Line for change of address half way through the year, with better customer service too.

I have just got my 110 Hard top 2002 TD5 insured, they say it comes under a Light Goods vehicle, and as I use it for work and have changed from my Transit van I had to renew insurance. My Original insurers (Quick fit ? Yes they do insurance) where £287 fully comp, I have 9 years no claims, and am 49 and been driving for 32 years. It is cheaper with the wife as a named driver ?. The other quotes I had where £478 and £800 Figure that one out.

There seems to be no 'rule of thumb' when it comes to insuring a vehicle no matter what it's type or classification. A Land Rover can have a few classifications, PLG (Private Light Goods), Utility (doubles as a car and a van) and a very 'grey' classification, PSV. This last one relates to Land Rovers and any other vehicle that have 8 or more seats fitted that technically come under the PSV classification which is a 'public service vehicle' and with this amount of seating is construde as a mini bus, even if you remove the 'extra' seats you can't change the class unless you also remove all traces of the seat mounts, fittings and everything else associated with the seats.

As for insurance, a broker may be the best to go through as they will find you the cheapest premium but will take a cut in commission but if you have many years driving behind you and you are of an age then going direct with an independent Company can be even cheaper. To get the best 'deal' work out what you want to cover and ring around different Companies and see what they can offer. Things to list would be, for a fully comprehensive cover and to bring the premium down would be, agree an excess, the first amount you would be prepared to pay for any repairs, don't add a 'named' driver, just 'any driver over 25 years of age with the owners consent' or, as said, your spouse, this will make it cheaper. That's the basics but ask the Company first what the wording of their fully comp policy is first to see what they cover as standard, some include windscreen, basic roadside rescue, un-insured driver, (if you're hit by one) theft of belongings, tools and also for towing, in towing, your trailer and the load would be insured even if the trailer and/or load belongs to someone else. You can basically 'tailor' a level of cover to however you like to suit you. If you look on these internet comparison sites just be aware that a lot are part of or belong to a single 'parent' Company and will give you a 'low' quote in the first instance to get your custom and automatically 'sign you up' near the end of the term and hike your premium conciderably. I would say to anyone that if you are satisfied with your current Company and the service and cover they provide then stay with them as they normaly give you a little in loyalty and an increasing 'no claims bonus' the longer you're with them.

Well just to update this post I rang around and spoke to Flux and 2gether and some others but the one that came out the best value for money on paper for me was Footman James @ £156 unlimited mileage and all the other bits n bobs thrown in..very pleased. :D

Were they ok about the mods engine, axles, lift, etc ?

I need to find a company that doesn't just put a zero on the end of the premium when you mention engine or chassis mods.

They were absolutely fine with the axles, engine, lift, spacers etc etc I have to be honest I was rather worried they might crank the premium up for anything other than standard. Although they did actually seem concerned in security i.e. pedal box, isolators, security post and other precautions and made a list as I related them .

I insured my '87 Ninety with Footman James for about the same as James got his cover for.

Mine isn't quite so modified, but I did have one company hike the price of their quote when they found out I'd converted it to a soft top.

So good on FJ for having a pragmatic and sensible approach, I hope it brings them more business.

I was not so impressed with footman james..... When i told them that my 110 has 12 seats though. They act like it is a modification and they cant insure you even though it came out of the factory like it (so called specialists!). Wouldnt insure it if i offered to take the rear seats out either - apparently i could put the seats back in..... i told them that surely then i would be uninsured, but they wouldnt budge :angry2: . I went back to NFU in the end - more money, but less hassle and a much better level of cover. I just hope they dont keep increasing their prices like they have of late.

Be aware that a lot of the policies FJ offer are classic policies that dont allow you to build up (or retain) a no claims bonus either.

My renewal from lancaster has doubled since last year :(

Put in a requote with the various modifications, hopefully it will stay under 500. I was well chuffed with the 250 i paid last year too....

Just had a look at Footman James, fell at the first hurdle: car must be garaged at night.

Anyone got any other insurance brokers etc to try a quote from for a generally modified defender (wheel, suspension, interior etc).

Thanks, ill try and get some quotes tomorrow for the above.

Adrian Flux came back with a 350 quid quote with mods etc which is 100 more than last year, but with the recent increases in prices etc i guess its not too bad.

That was with equity red star or something.

I'm interested in this as I just had a defender stolen, and have therefore lost most no-claims bonus.

Is there any forum where representatives of insurance industry can be asked about recommendations for security measures to help keep vehicles secure and premiums under control?

I have a 1988 County with a 200tdi disco lump, different rear axle, lift kit, winch, and various other mods. I am 30 and insure the truck as a second vehicle so have no NCD. I insure through SureTerm direct and they only charge £250 fully comp with legal cover etc thrown in. They had no problems with mods but do limit my mileage to 3k a year. That's great for me, but no good if you use it everyday.

After recommendations on here I went with Frank Pickles for my 110.

Footman James (& others) maybe cheaper for relatively minor mods.

To put the price in to context my truck has: 4.6 V8, modified suspension, 35" tyres, modified bodywork, winch & A-Bar, under body protection, etc, etc.

Cost was £400 fully comp for a 39 year old driver (I have a company car so 0 no claims) with points for SP30.

According to the thread in the international section, Frank Pickles are not taking new trade and depending on who posts, they may not be renewing existing policies.

My problem with FP was that i wasnt modified enough, they had a very limited mileage on all policies and couldnt offer me business use. OK for occasional use, but not for everyday vehicles. Its a shame though as they seem to understand our vehicles which makes a nice change in insurance circles.
