As long as the treads covered according to the rules then yes fine. My 'problem' is that I have existing wheels that I don't want and can't afford to change....I need to check, but I think they'll fall outside the wings if I use a coiler axle....need to measure it really

That is another good point! I am using defender wings but without the spats. I plan on using low offset rims and more road bias tyres. I think these should be legal and pass an MOT fine?....

Totally agree, and with the CV's in it'll be better for the LT230 now installed.....it's just the extra width that's putting me off at the minute.....Defender spats don't fit Series wings...

exactly why i did my disk covnersion the way i did, series just look wrong IMO with spats on. although IIRC using coiler axles and proper land rover wheels, you shouldnt need the spats as the narrow offset on the steels brings the track back in. dont ask me which steels that would need as there are so many different subtle offset variants. (ask me how i know...)

Just to be anal IIRC it's a construction and use fail point not actually an MOT issue having uncovered tread. Still not ideal but it may well save you a lot of agro and a re-test.

Also During my absence my dad made a U bolt to go next to the front diff :i-m_so_happy: I am very happy with it. In fact when I first saw it I thought he had got someone to make it :P

We have also taken the manifolds off to clean up and replace some studs before changing the sump and putting the Y pipe back on. Had to lift the engine a little to get these off which is a little annoying my not too surprising as they are quite close to the top of the chassis.... Dad also made some blanking plates for where the EGR and 2 lambda sensors normal go. Will need to order some gaskets before fitting them though.

Thats it till the sump gets changed in a week and a halfs time. Should be able to measure up and hopefully find some standard size props that fit... (crosses fingers)

:-/ hmmmm yeah it was a bit.... Its the sump etc from a 4.7 V8 amazon. I couldn't find one in this country had a supposed importer provide one and the "as new" condition was shocking! Will dig out some pics later. So bought the gen new bits but not from Toyota so was slightly cheaper....

Good thing I have my defender to keep me occupied.... Which I should be selling before the insurance runs out.... and I then save up a bit more for a TVR.... Heading slowyly towards an all V8 garage? :D

For anyone who is interested here are the pictures of the parts from Vantage Auto the importers. I would highly recommend that no one ever goes near them! I was told these parts would be in "as new" condition... Really wasnt sure if they thought I was going to be a blind man or just a complete moron?

They wanted a deposit to cover shipping costs. Luckily they waved this because i was honest with the guy and said i couldn't find anything about them. I wouldn't have ordered anything if i had to pay a deposit with an unknown company and good thing i didn't!

We made some plates to cover holes in the exhaust manifold where the EGR system and lambda sensors used to be. These are now painted and on the car.

I also managed to get the new sump on. (This is the 3rd....) and now I have plenty of clearance for the propshaft :i-m_so_happy: and we also managed to do it without removing the gearbox although this did involve cutting a couple of small bits out the bell housing...

Thats it for now. Going home this weekend as well so more of the car should start coming together. We will get the seat box in and then my electrical expert (dad) :ph34r: can start making the loom and no I didnt ask if could do it, he volunteered!

Great progress! Yeah that should be plenty clearance for the prop, I've seen many swaps with less. That is quite some bracket for a simple steering damper :D but that is the joy of adding things to a galv'ed chassis, everything has to be bolt-on. Not a bad thing though, to the contrary it's just so much more time consuming.

PS: You should be really glad your Dad is helping you that much, getting home and seeing progress even though you have been away is so nice, I know it all to well myself, we often do stuff for each other as well. One time I really stumped him was when he had bought a used airlocker for his 88". He had installed the compressor and switches and run the airline to the back. But he just could not get him self to take out the diff and fit the locker because he has a bad arm, making it a really though job. So one saturday when he and me Mom was out I swapped it in for him and hooked up the airline. Then when he got home I told him I had bad news. I had just been under his landie to take a measurement and then I saw great big crack in his chassis. I told him. He jumped right in under the thing and started looking everywhere, then I told him he had to follow the blue airline, then he would see it. Suddenly he got all quiet.. Then he came out with a great big smile on his face! Priceless! :D

Ok...I'm intrigued...whats with the steering damper?

standard fitment on defenders, discos etc.... am I missing the actual question? Fitted coil axles so fitted the steering damper as well. Is it not needed on leafs?

It generally wasn't fitted to leafers, but I believe it was option on at least the late series 3's. I know my dad's 1983 has a bracket for one.

Either way, can't be a bad thing to have one on there.

Really loving reading about this build too, keep up the good work.

the steering relay has a brake damper type system in it, its not as efficient as a traditional oil type steering damper like you have fitted, and they can get quite weak, thus the option for the later series III's

so if your running coiler axles and series steering system, not an issue, if you run a later steering box, PAS, manual (not that i can see a point in converting to "defender" manual steering haha) then you ought to fit a coiler steering damper
