Anderzander
I was thinking about checking for play in my drive flanges and perhaps investing in a set of heavy duty type ones, but have I read that the Td5 has one piece half shafts / drive flange ? So, excuse my ignorance but if its one piece what are the Td5 heavy duty drive flanges produced for ? Am I missing some basic axle anatomical understanding ? carlosbeldia
TD5 have two pieces half shaft / drive set....
Anderzander
Thank you ! Which 90's had the one piece ones then ? And if they removed the potential for wear at the hub ... Why wasn't the design more widespread ?
PaddyMac
I replaced the rear half shafts and flanges on the 110 couple of weeks ago after changing the front cv's, bearings etc. which cost me a small fortune...I was starting to think that if they go again I might weld them .. cackshifter
I have a 97 tdi 90 with one piece shafts. Seems a good idea unless you want ro get the hub off in a confined space
Disco-Ron
99% sure the td5 has flanges on the front, but one piece shafts/flanges on the rear.
muddy
Some 300s and mainly? Earlier td5s have the one piece shafts, no reason you can't fit two piece ones however.
Disco-Ron
Been thinking more about this, my above statement was re 90's. . . 110's may be different, but I'm still pretty sure rears are one piece, never seen a Salisbury on a td5, they're two piece normally
Anderzander
Mines an early Td5 90 ..... I'll have to pull it out and have a look at some point. Although perhaps it's obvious from the lack of a circlip...
Mo Murphy
You're right, it's obvious Mo
Anderzander
Thanks Mo - I feel simultaneously supported and undermined :-)
Retroanaconda
90s had one-piece rear shafts from approximately 300Tdi onwards. Two-piece (10-spline) before that. 110s have always had two-piece rear shafts. Unless they changed it when they changed the rear axle set up. Everything Defender has separate on the front of course, as you've got the CV instead.
oneandtwo
90's reverted to two piece 24 spline halfshafts approx 2004 when the rear Salisbury axle was dropped from the 110. I believe it is to introduce commonality - both the 90 and 110 use the same halfshafts now. The newer 90's halfshafts are much beefier than they used to be but the splines are the weak point, I changed a pair on a 2006 which had stripped the splines on one side and the other was not far behind. My solution - I fitted a pair of old 300tdi one piece halfshafts!
