Tetsu0san
My insurance is due early March and I had a call from the current broker to ask if I wanted to renew. Basically I went to them about 4 years ago as all the other brokers were doing £250+ quotes and they could do me cover for about (I can't remember the exact cost) £120. Anyway, over the years the premium crept up and up and last year it cost me over £175 including changing the cover from my Discovery to my 110. This year they quoted me £165 fully comp on 3000 annual miles but wouldn't cover me for driving other vehicles any more. Also their cover has always only kept my no claims alive but it never increases. This is not ideal, but I figured it was a by-product of cheaper cover. I said to them it was too much and then they asked if I was a member of a club. I said the Greenlane Association and it went down by £10. Still not overly impressed. So I thought I would look around. Anyway, I started with Adrian Flux and to cut a long story short they offered me fully comp with 10000 annual mileage, driving other vehicles, my no claims will increase on this policy and I got it for £108. I am a happier bunny.
Anderzander
Blimey that's cheap. Is that a standard vehicle ?
Tetsu0san
They did ask if it was modded but at the moment it is standard, and probably always will be. The only thing I have done is an engine and gearbox swap and as the engine is the same size they were happy with that as being standard. I said I fitted a roof rack, they weren't interested in that either. So is that a good price? I remember paying something like that on my Series 2A about 15 years ago, so maybe it is a good price after all.

AMB
I've not had any luck with Adrian Flux. They have been consistently far more expensive than other insurers. Perhaps I have been too honest in declaring (minor) modifications to my more or less standard '98, 110 Tdi CSW. It also seems that my wife's recent driving record adversely affects my premium - although she would not be a driver on the Defender policy, none of the accidents have been her fault, bar one 50/50 no damage incident, 3rd party admitted full liability and no claims not affected on the others. Anybody offer any suggestions for good insurers? I'm not an off-roader and the Defender was a retirement present to myself for occasional boat towing and general pottering. Try Swintons, been with em for years, good prices and friendly staff
ejparrott
Peter James, I got fed up with Flux ripping me off.
bushwhacker
Hello. Do an internet search for classic insurance or ordinary insurance you might have a bit of luck. I have had good quotes in previous years and I am in the process of searching and hope to have it sorted tomorrow. Good luck.

Much cheaper than Flux!
Cynic-al
When I used to insure my classic it was £300+, I asked why this was so much more than a defender and was told having range rover in the name made it a high risk on the computer :/ if it was £100 it'd probably still be insured That said the renewal on my citroen was cheaper than anywhere this year, it was nice not to have to mess about changing! My house insurance was the same. Maybe now it's easy to shop around on price comparison sites insurers are being less greedy on renewals? AMB
Thanks for the suggestions. Will be on the phone again this afternoon. Although my vehicle is a Defender, a lot of websites don't let you put in the correct date ('98 in my case). I spoke to one agent yesterday who tried to tell me that Defenders were first made in 2006 because that's what his system told him! Yet no available category for a '98, 110, 5 door (CSW), 2495cc diesel. I didn't have much hair to start with.
daveturnbull
Try LV. Much cheaper than Flux! Not always. I've just renewed my insurance for the P38. Auto-renewal figure from Adrian Flux was £370. I spent 5 minutes on t'internet comparing meerkats, and had an offer of £204 from Admiral. LV were waaaaay down the list at £650 odd. Anyway, quick call to Flux with my findings, and 5 minutes later they tell me they can do it for £200!!! So why quote me £370 initially then? It's even with the same under-writer. dave1607
I was with Sureterm up until this year, when I phoned about the renewal the guy said he would check the Lancaster system as they are the same company. In the end Lancaster can up cheaper with an enthusiast policy that earns me no claims bonus and covers me for green laning. I declaired all modifications (which at the moment are only wheels and snorkel) and he said they didn't affect the premium unless it was performance enhancing engine modifications. I've found that it always pays to ring the specialist companies as they seem to be a bit more understanding and actually understand what you are talking about, I once spent 20 mins trying to explain what a raised air intake was to someone from direct line, in the end they decided that the closest thing on their system was a performance air filter and wanted to charge me an extra £100 per year. bushwhacker
Well, I'm sorted. Insurance for a 1986 csw 2.5d £139 odd annual or £27 odd deposit and 10 months x £12 odd. 52 years young, no disqualifications or convictions full license for a long time + the wife. 5000 miles, winch, underbody guards' rocksliders, 50mm lift and offroad/green lane cover. Only bad bit was £400 excess. I nearly forgot to say it was through "Lancaster" 01480 484826. Shop around people it's the only way.
ejparrott
Any insurance should cover you for greenlanes, they are legal roads afterall.
bushwhacker
I hadn't thought of that greenlane bit (we don't seem to have any here in N.I.) but at least they offered it and offroad without having me to explain what they were. I can only imagine what some of the other insurance companies would have made of it.
