Simon_CSK
Can anyone tell me what gearbox and transfer box are in a TD5 manual disco 2 circa 2001?
BogMonster
R380 gearbox and LT230 transfer box. Same in all D2s. The auto is a ZF 4HP22, also on an LT230. Different variants of both auto and manual to suit the V8 / Td5, but essentially the same unit (ratios etc are slightly different)

Transmission blew up on Sunday just in time for MOT.
Simon_CSK
So another question.......would any R380 do the job?
FridgeFreezer
So another question.......would any R380 do the job? No - front & back ends vary with engine & vehicle. You *can* swap stuff over but it amounts to a gearbox teardown & rebuild.

Would a Disco 1 gearbox fit a Disco 2? Say changing the bell housing?
discomikey
the bellhousings have a different part number, however i seem to remember the transmissions were common between TD5 disco and TD5 defender?
sierrafery
As about the R380, there are 4 types(A,B,C,D), the D2 was equipped with B type and better get one of those otherwise the selector lever might not fit exactly to the central console, see the differencies here http://www.landroverweb.com/Pdf-files/Manuals/R380%20Gearbox%20Overhaul%20Manual.pdf the TB is generally callled LT230 but the D2 was equipped with LT230SE while other modells with LT230Q even if they mechanically fit there are many functional differencies, there are differencies even between early modells and facelifts: Vehicles up to 03 model year – Whilst similar to LT230Q transfer boxes fitted to other models, the LT230SE transfer box has certain engineering modifications incorporated which are as follows: l Uprated torque capacity l Modified front and rear output and cross shaft housings l Intermediate gear bearing pre-load now controlled by a selective, non-collapsible spacer l Speedometer drive and driven gears not fitted for this application l Modified high/low sleeve l Modified front output flange and mud shield l Differential lock fitted to certain vehicles, but no longer driver operated l Fixed setting of differential lock warning lamp switch on vehicles fitted with differential lock Vehicles from 03 model year – The LT230SE transfer box is as described above for vehicles up to 03 model year with the following modifications: The following items are introduced on vehicles from 03 model year l Ribs added to main casing to reduce operating noise l Bearing retaining nut on the differential carrier has patchlock added to the threads l Interlock solenoid moved from main casing to selector lever assembly l Intermediate gears modified with machined internal shoulder and bearing circlips deleted The following items are introduced later in the 03 model year build programme and therefore may not appear on all 03 model year vehicles l Driver operated differential lock (if fitted) l High/Low selector shaft fitted with spring assist l Existing differential lock switch replaced by new design switch. l New secondary differential lock switch installed in the front output housing
Stevov8
so I have a question!! I have a disco 2 v8 auto will the td5 manual gearbox fit ?
Arjan
Goedemiddag, Yes, it should fit. Apart from an extra pedal and obvious alterations to the tunnel. However, it will take some serious efforts to make the ECU's work with it
FridgeFreezer
11 hours ago, Stevov8 said: so I have a question!! I have a disco 2 v8 auto will the td5 manual gearbox fit ? Pretty sure the front end (bellhousing, clutch, input shaft) are different so not a bolt-on. If you wanted to dismantle the box and replace the input shaft, source a V8 bellhousing etc. the back half is the same... it's a ton of work though.
Arjan
What i should have said - rearing back - is that is will fit inside the tunnel. Obviously, fitting to engine requires bits & pieces as you have a clutch (instead of a torque converter) and all that. Question is : why change ? Gary g
Hi I have just fitted a zf 4hp22 auto box in a 300tdi 110 defender which transfer box should I be using?
Bowie69
Either the LT230 or the Borg Warner will fit -the latter is quieter but is only reasonably available in one high ratio - 1.2, if you run big tyres then this can be an issue. Depends on your use and truck spec
Bowie69
Quick caveat on that, if fitting an LT230 to an auto box that used to have a Borg Warner transfer box on it, you probably need to swap out the transmission output shaft (just one bolt to remove) for one with longer splines. FTC5090 is the part number, I believe, but do check.
