chris2010
300 tdi defender. Auto. 1.6 transfer box. Running on 35.10.5.16 fedima siroccos. Rear mounted . Full length brand new defender td radiator. Twin cooling fans . Davies craig electronic water pump with controller to suit. Water pump impeller and thermostat removed. Brand new cylinder head and gaskets . 50/50 antifreeze mix This is the problem or not . Outside temperature 26 degree's. 50 mph constant speed. Temperature gauge sits between 100 degrees and 105 degrees. To me this seems to warm. But it's a constant reading backed up with the davies craig temperature reading. When I drop down to 30mph through town it drops to about 90/95 degree's. and on idle it sits at 85ish after its cooled down . Is this OK ? Or am I getting over paranoid ? My only next thing I'm going to install a roof scoop to direct cold air behind the can
vulcan bomber
That sounds very hot to me.... My 200 sits at 88 degrees all day.. Doesn't matter what it's doing. That's off an aftermarket VDO Temp gauge.
chris2010
My runs a vdo gauge . I'm just wondering with all the mods etc it might push temperatures up . Also with the lack of natural airflow through the rad this would put the temperatures up
Diesel_90
When you say you've removed the thermostat have you blanked off the bypass hose?
western
reckon with rad behind the cab & no ram air flow only the fans [when they switch on] & no thermostat that's why your getting over 100 degree readings, most 'normal' tdi's sit around 90/95 when working. Team Idris
Sounds like a reverse vortex coming off the front of the vehicle and working against the fans. Do the fans have a proper fan-cowl in the form of a box? (As opposed to two fans lying against the rads fins)? Landys have funny air flows. At 30mph a sheet rolled up in front of the vents started moving toward the bonnet edge!
chris2010
The bypass pipe goes to the radiator . fans are up against the fins, When fans are on . And on idle you can feel a lot of hot air being pushed out of the rear of the radiator
chris2010
This fault is starting to get on my nerves to the point I may just break my truck up. Give up spending money on it
Snagger
I'd refit the original water pump and thermostat for a start, but the rear mounted rad isn't going to be good for high speeds.
FridgeFreezer
Rear mounted rads can work really well at all speeds, but it's all about how you duct air to them. Seeing a photo or three of the setup would be very helpful.
miketomcat
Put the thermostat back in it's there for a reason without it there is no control over water temperature or flow. I ran a 200tdi tomcat with rear rad for 5 years as a daily driver several trips to Italy never a problem I had standard water pump, standard thermostat and an electric fan (that very rarely ran).
