Fitting a K n N type Air filter

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

We have a Southdown snorkel fitted to our now Disco 200tdi 90 ( was Def 200tdi ) anyway son was off roading at kirton a few weeks ago going through puddles not fast but not slow and he forgot to turn the head round on the snorkel to stop the spray of mud and water getting in the snorkel and the week after I decided to remove the engine to fit a Disco engine in and whilst removing the air intake pipe from the turbo there was signs of dry muddy water in the pipe and looked up at the head of the snorkel and it was facing forwards and the grill of the head had signs of muddy water on it aswell, the truck is currently running without an air filter mainly from lack of space in the engine bay and just the snorkel piped in.

So with the new engine fitted and seeing this I want to fit an air filter before we go off roading again, anyway I have seen snorkels fitted with a piece of pipe fitted where the snorkel head would be and a cone type air filter connected to the pipe and fixed to a role cage or light bar, we don't have either so will need to find some way of doing something, but I need to know does this type of setup really work and how often do you need to clean the filter, pic's would be nice if possible

Had a similar problems with space. I Bought an inline airbox in the end. they vary in size and price but I found a BMC cda on eBay for not a lot K&N Apollo is another option.

Fitting an airbox somewhere can and has been done so I would look at that as mounting an air filter externally imo isn't the best idea for what we do

One of my mates had a K&N filter on the end of his snorkel. it was alright at first until it rained and absorbed a load of water which strangled the engine, he then put a little rain cover over the top of it. Later it got a decent splash on it whilst wading and flooded the engine, he's changed to an OE filter box now

You could always try finding the set up as fitted to a winterised/waterproofed WOLF. Mind you when I asked about the possibility of buying one from a LR dealer the price was a bit eye watering. Just over £1200 and that was just for the filter housing on top of the snorkel

This is part of the reason I pleaded with you to keep the Defender version in.

You should be able to use a 300Tdi Defender filter canister if you can get some tubing to join it to the snorkel and the turbo. K&N do filters that fit that housing (I have one that fits the 12/19J filter housing in mine, a type of housing that could be adapted to mount in the same way as the 300Tdi type).

Yeah I have still got the original 200tdi air filter but wasn't quite sure if it was off a Def or a Disco 200 as was a 2.5td originally as the canister was mounted in such away you had to remove it to check the oil and there was loads of room on the other side but not easy to make fit but with the Disco engine fitted I just mite be able to make it fit on the drivers side of the engine
