  1. Ours go to a local merc independent, who resigned from the dealer because he was disgusted with the practices going on there, shocks for the mercs with self levelling are very expensive but then thats what gives you the magic carpet ride... Mike
  2. glad to see he's wearing his regulation welding sandals Do you think they drink Dr Pepper? 'what could possibly go wrong'
  3. I just put a britpart one on the 109, was utter cr@p and i had to modify it to fit, I only fitted it cos its not going to tow or be used for recovery, only for camping or I would have sent it back, one thing that winds me up about them is the complete lack of crush tubes!
  4. Hi Welcome to the forum! not being funny or wanting to teach granny etc but is there someone local to you who has a land rover who could have a quick drive, the steering can feel a bit vague after driving a 'normal' car if you aren't used to it, also maybe they could give you a hand and save you a hefty garage bill? Mike
  5. Paddocks can be hit and miss, in my experience its usually sending pattern parts by mistake when i ordered genuine/oem but as has been said before its usually a case of a quick phone call and its sorted very fast, I usually order over the phone now and tell them i dont want any britpart bits in the order and they send bearmach or oem, if you order from the site you can guarantee you'll be getting the blue box of kwality mike
  6. probably because defenders can be reduced to parts on ebay long before the plod get round to looking for it! mike
  7. Hi Guys thanks for the help, will check under the base plate, mini part numbers are fine, i wonder if its the same as the one off the mini then? may have to rob a working one off cat's mini , last time I took a dizzy apart it was on my mini years ago, I have stuck to diseasel since then What are the simple options for going electronic? in the spirit of actually getting the thing to start if its mildly damp? IIRC theres a lumenition module thing that fixes into the dizzy thats a popular mod on minis, seems pricy for what it is though? Mike
  8. I personally dont use britpart for any safety critical parts, why dont you get some second hand calipers and new pistons/seals? Mike
  9. word of caution, those LH thread screw extractor things tend to be utter cr@p and will snap off leaving a bolt in the hole now with a hardened steel core, better are the LH drill bits, if you still cant get it out then drill it and helicoil or tap it to the next size up... I'd do the UJ if i was you, you can whip the prop off the car and go and do it in the warm? Mike
  10. one of my vapour security projects is going to be a simple plate piano hinged to the floor in the dirvers footwell, when you park just hinge it up to a waiting padlock and hasp on the bulkhead and hey presto all the pedals locked away, probably easy to bypass but iit will be cheap and it adds another layer to the 'onion of security'.... yes i did just make that up mike
  11. Hi Guys Went to refurb the distributer in the 109 (2.25P 1984) and the bits I had ordered didn't want to fit, ok I thought, I must have the other one of the two types, I ordered the other set of parts for it and they dont fit either? Question is this... what distributer is this, and what are the part numbers for a set of points, a condensor, rotor arm and cap? Ta Mike
  12. Hi yep some pics here Rivets are visible but will blend in when i respray it view from underneath showing how the box tucks up out of the way inside shot with lid shut its possible to fit a surprising amount of stuff in... who said all those hours playing tetris were wasted Mike
  13. Hi I made mine using treadplate bent up into an 'L' shape with a flange all the way round, riveted and glued it inplace under the wheel arch and then cut an access hatch into the top, to give access from the inside. Mike
  14. lol thats tomorrows job then, well i didnt fancy sanding yet more of the 109 down for paint anyway Thanks for all the help! Mike
  15. Thanks Guys, I think I'll take it down to the bike place in Northwich, Its my daily driver/commuter so it needs fixing ASAP although given the weather today I'd be taking the car anyway Ta Mike
  16. any reason why you cant import a 110 instead of a 109? You sound like youre going to essentially build a 110 on a series logbook? Dont know bout the law in the US but here that would require an extra test (SVA) to be legal? Finally, if you are planning to do that much work have a look at FridgeFreezers 109 on here and put some proper axles on it Mike
  17. Thanks for the help guys, It was running really rough before i took it to the garage, the carbs have been off and stripped and had seals replaced, IIRC the mechanic had to wait 3 weeks for a set of seals from suzuki, it was running beautifully when he fired it up before i put it on the trailer so I would think the carbs are ok? It does have a fuel tap, and when it leaked and hyrauliced it also leaked down the fairing and onto the floor, which I guess would point to the tap? If its the tap how much of a ball ache is it going to be to change the seal, or should I get a grown up to help me? Mike
  18. Hi Nige yup that would fit, it was stood for 3 years before i got it, I'm in Aigburth most of the time when I'm at uni and Northwich at the weekends. The bike is at my unit in Northwich, whereabouts on the wirral are you? I go over your side of the water very regularly, I have placements at Clatterbridge and Arrowe Park, my wife, Cat, is a radiographer at Clatterbridge so we are moving over to the wirral in the next few months hopefully Mike
  19. nope doesnt make much difference, the car is brick shaped anyway
  20. Hi I have a 1990 Suzuki gsx600f, just passed its MOT but wouldn't start when the mechanic went to collect it, he said that a seal had gone and that it has hydrauliced on its petrol, he drained a load of fuel out of the sump and had to replace the plugs, but all was well now and he been round the block, as i was there with the trailer and the service from this place has been cr@p and very slow i just took the bike home, 2 days later it has done it again so he obviously didnt replace the seal.. I know naff all about bikes so when i take it to the garage or get the mobile mechanic out what is the likely culprit and roughly how much dosh am i looking at? he was blabbering about vacuum tanks and seals and going to jelly but TBH I'd been sat waiting in the car for 2 hours and made vanny very late so just wanted to get home! are there any suitably qualified forumeers who live in the northwest and have a hobnob and beer shaped hole in their life? Ta Mike
  21. hi yeah i looked closely at his write up, I'm not desperately keen to drill holes in the roof as I have one of the extremely rare non leaky series roofs! I also like the idea of a hoop as it will also confer some roll over protection (before anyone starts i know they arent as good as a proper one) because the back is being converted to a camper the hoop will also form a good base for building in some custom storage I have planned thanks mike
  22. ok new question, do the military roll hoops fit inside a hard top? i presume i'll need to trim the bottom of the van sides to fit around the bottom of the hoop?
  23. yup rebuilding a landy like that is perfectly possible given discovery channels bottomless pockets, a fully equipped workshop with 2 resident mechanics, and suppliers who will actually deliver on time or face the threat of public shaming! If you have all that its easy peasy mike
  24. Hi Vehicle in question is a series 3 109, my sisters using it as a camper and has 2 small kids so ideally want to fit them all in the front seats (def type), the older child can go in the centre seat as she just needs a booster seat, the other one is in a car seat still. Question is this, I'm perfectly happy mounting all the seatbelts and making suitable anchors for the extra 3 point in the middle except I was wondering about the shoulder mount for the middle seat... Current plan is some sort of capping mount roll hoop (like the military one IIRC??) that I can then weld a bracket on? what does the panel think? I know they dont mount to the chassis but it would still be as strong/stronger than the existing shoulder mounts that just fit to the van sides/roof? Any thoughts? Havent got time to make it myself, unfortunately havent got vast caves full of treasure to pay for it either! Mike
