  1. normal white spirit is extremely good but might eat your pump, well make it die slightly faster anyway.... mike
  2. hi just a word of caution, its a small bearing and quite easy to get in out of square so as les said just be very careful when your fitting it mike
  3. thanks i have started modifying an old socket to fit, is the special tool available from anywhere, there was somewhere i found on the net but they wanted £80 odd quid for it!!! Mike
  4. ok chaps heres the offending item, not actually done anything to the axles today i've been too busy getting the bodywork done, wont be long now mike
  5. pah 15 months is nothing, i'm at 27 months now just for a chassis swap! well it started as just a chassis swap.... i get the same feelings as you do mate, i have all the cars in my sig to finish too, i think it helps having more than one project cos then when one of them is p-ing you off you can go and play with the other one... I would echo the above advice and get a cheap toy to play with/use while you finish yours ( dare i mention a suzuki ), then the pressure is off and you can finish yours when you get some enthusiasm back? I find a good way to get things started again after big 'cant be bothered spell' is to get some new shiny bits in, get a lot of mates over and get a good day done, where you have lots of manpower and bits to fit and you feel like you got loads done... There should be a LR pdf manual for 'Countermeasures for when your LR starts using psychological warfare' Mike
  6. hi off the top of my head not having vannys iso etc bs wiring standards anorak book to hand i think green with white tracer is right side indicators mike
  7. just a personal thing but i like to able to see how much thread is hanging out, then a quick visual check shows me they are still done up.... but you should check them regularly anyway.... mike
  8. yup took split pin out will have to wait and get some pics for you mike
  9. I've had it in a big vice with a big hammer and drift for about 2 hours and it hasnt budged hence the need to get some leverage on it! will try and get some pics mike btw john i just collected those bits thanks!
  10. err no idea possibly superwinch, will have to get my dad to check at the unit and i'll get back to you! Mike
  11. Hi Just started stripping front axle on the 109 and i have come across a round nut i cant get off, looking at the parts manual it looks like it needs a special kind of splined socket? are these available to buy or have a got to 'delicately machine' an old socket to fit? Its fitted with fwh which i'll probably replace with standard driving members, can I replace these nuts with a normal hex one? I'm very new to series landys and this is the first series axle i have had apart so any advice is welcome, heres me naively thinking it would be smilar to my 110 mike
  12. assuming you had 7.50 16 on there before then your speedo will be fine, 265/75/16 is only a fraction different to 235/85/16 and 7.50/16, have a play here mike
  13. If you offroad then you might like to read the excellent post in the tech archive about reinforcing the papier mache aftermarket x members Mike
  14. er you should be able to get timken bearings much cheper than that IIRC £7 is about right for the timken, take your old ones to a bearing/pump place and they will match them for you Mike
  15. I'm with luke on this one... A garage defender is the best advert you can get for telling theives it will be worth their while breaking in, the best thing to do is fix nice big bolts on each side of the door that will take a padlock and put them on the inside, make sure you paint the bolt head/nut on the outside so its not obvious, and get a cheap battery alarm and put it somewhere its a bu@@er to get to! Mike
  16. welcome to the dark (and smoky) side... Mike
  17. Hi in a word yes... you do get what you pay for, I have a husky on mine but I believe the superwinch ep9 is the the popular choice for the balance between £££ and performance/reliability, dont forget that you may need to add in the cost of upgrading your electrics, batteries, split charger, bigger alternator etc, as well as getting all the other bits like shackles, slings etc..... Mike
  18. i think thats the standard thing they are trained to say, everytime i walk in there i can only get about 10 metres before someone asks what i'm looking for, then stares blankly at me when i ask before saying... 'what are you using it for?' i mean ffs how do you explain what you use etch primer for without saying 'etch priming'???!! sorry rant over, btw i have quite a few halfords pro tools and would definately recommend them. Mike
  19. you can do it yourself if you do the following, undo the nuts holding the sides down to the cappings put 2 axle stands on the wheel boxes get a bar longer than the width of the car ready stand in the back, lift the roof with your shoulders and stick the bar on the stands quick! repeat for front! just be careful of your back and that the whole lot doesnt go off balance and over the side of the tub mike
  20. Ok thanks for all the suggestions, Its going blue, with the roof white, dont know what blue it is, its the colour of my replacement seatbox I put in it, the paint place will mix it to match an offcut i have, will post up pics when i've cocked it up i mean painted it
  21. dont worry....... sounds like it wont be in your sump for long mike
  22. Thanks for all the replies chaps, This will be my first attempt at spraying with a compressor so I think metallic is beyond me, I do like the look of the bright colours orange etc but whilst these colours may make it comercially less desirable, they do draw attention to the car, round where I live a bright colour would probably be a magnet to all the local pond life kids to come and vandalise it looks like the choice is down to white, whether thats arctic white, mint white, white white, snowdrop white, cliffs of dover white, blizzard white or mighty white or oslo blue or something bright (thought maybe JCB yellow.... then it could get nicked AND used to pull out an ATM ) Mike
  23. Dont start! I've already had to put my foot down, SWMBO is already painting her mini dark pink metallic!!! she wanted pink with flowers
  24. not too keen on the heritage defenders, never really liked them cant have red, cat doesnt like it , silver and black are really nic but both too nickable, i really like the oslo blue , i might get that made in none metallic...
  25. hmm I like the light green, and the other classic colours like limestone (this is what my sisters 109 is) but they make a classic car like a series look classic, I dont think a defender would pull it off...
