  4. I would also check your clutch with a view to replace it if it looks worn, would be a lot of work if it fails sooner rather than later Regards Stephen
  5. Still need to keep tyres away from springs as too close and tyres will foul springs when articulating regards Stephen
  6. Dilema time acording to my measurements and due to the offset I made in the wheel rims it would seem like I only have three and a half inches to take out of axle that spells out a lot of work for not a lot of gain so i decided to mock up what wheels would look like at the future finished distance luckily by reversing the wheels they have given me the correct width once bolted onto the lightweight hubs so I'm throwing it out to the forum to give some opinions thanks in advance guys Best in mind that the car will also sit higher once portal axle installed
  7. Some cleaning up of back axle and portal hubs fitted along with wheels and tyres might have to make an a frame lifting beam was knackered after lifting the above on to the axle all this to get some decent measurements
  8. At last managed to get some more work done did not realise how much of a pig these diffs are to remove but managed with the help of a copper hammer a careful bit of trimming to be done before they go back together
  9. When you are setting welder up if it looks like wire is burning back to the tip you will need to increase wire feed if it seems to be pushing gun away you will need to decrease speed slightly get work pieces as clean as possible and a good earth preferably as close to point of welding as is practicable bacon frying and got somewhere near good luck regards Stephen
  10. As Steve B said plain steel washer and felt seal to prevent oil coming out regards Stephen
  11. That's exactly what I meant I was looking from a handy gadget point of view not taking anything away from your wheels they look great fancying yellow for stuff on my portal project regards Stephen
  12. Liking the rim supports where do you get them from Mike regards Stephen
  13. Whilst we're talking about riveting stuff this is a tool I bought a couple of years back does pop rivets of varying sizes up to 4mm diameter on the steel pin and rivitnuts as well up to 12mm all done with interchangeable heads regards Stephen
  14. Seems ok on the grunt side of life have an aggressive abrasive on the disc and a fine one for the belt I am finding it more convenient for cleaning up smaller sections / pieces of metal and removing sharp edges than holding a grinder one handed for ages if I end up nrrding more grunt I have a selection of single phase motors I could fit what size is yours I shopped around until a 9" disc and 6" belt was available had looked at the Clarke ones but were out of my price range at the moment would be interesting to see what they are like in comparison regards Stephen
  15. Drill the hole out to a larger size so you can get a decent bit of bar in to assist with leverage or a large pair of stiltsons to grip body and turn Regards Stephen
  16. Another wee addition will use it to assist with machining half shaft splines on portal project
  17. Push comes to shove you could drill it out or drill the bolt to a smaller size to tap it even at M6 it will give you some holding power but better than nothing at all Regards Stephen
  18. They have taste but gonna have to go opened the bonnet of my 2a lightweight and had to run wasps not happy at me disturbing their nest this is the second time I've had wasps in a lightweght hose pipe out later my preferred method is using a can of penetrating oil as a flame thrower but not today
  19. If you do one side at a time the bulkhead should stay in place as it will be supported by the other side gearbox tunnel will also aid support as will the brackets that extend onto the chassis from the footwells in the engine bay remove the bolt that fastens to the outrigger first if it does drop slightly put the bolt back in and support it with some wood on a jack then remove bolt and continue going back to the mig spatter all over the place could be down to work piece not clean enough wire feed too high for the current settings holding the torch too far away i think the common analogy is if you have it right it should sound like frying bacon good luck you will find it very satisfying when you get it right just try some spot welds first to get the feel regards Stephen
  20. This might help although pictures not great regards Stephen
  21. You have the confidence to remove the floor etc and attacking stuff with a grinder this would also have been out of your comfort Zone at some point in your life Mig welding is seriously easy to get the hang of in comparison to other welding techniques You could possibly even hire one for a week to explore whether it is viable to go down that route without incurring significant cost Bits of metal plate are easily and economically obtained from your local scrap man / steel recyclers I quite often get aluminium, steel or stainless plate pieces at very reasonable prices even ask some mates that may have access to there scrap skip at work for a few bits to practice on. When I was learning to use my tig our local guy gave me some bits to practice on he reasoned he was getting the bits back slightly heavier with my splutterings on win win for both of us Regards Stephen
  22. Just to reassure You will not pull the chassis out of line with the outriggers if you were using stick welding you could blow holes in as stick welding is definately harder to master mig in comparison is very easy gaps can be filled easily and you have much more control just ensure material to be welded is clean watch a couple of you tube videos on setting machine up and you will be pleasantly suprised how easy it can be you would only require a cheaper machine initially and then move to a better one as your confidence improves if you are not in a rush for the repairs it is worth considering regards Stephen
  23. Thats way to expensive in my opinion if you remove everything connected to the bulkhead so it is just a case of cutting old one off and cleaning up for welding new outrigger that would be 30 -60 minutes depending upon skill level once prepared its just a matter of putting new outrigger into position fit bulkhead bolt clamp rigger to chassis and weld this would be less than an hour per side this would be 4hrs total which is a very generous amount of time in my opinion considering your removing stuff to give good access this equates to a little over a £100 per hour for that sort of money you could buy a mig and do it yourself after practicing on some scrap steel ultimately you would be able to tackle any future repairs as welding repairs are a staple diet of landrover . Hope this helps regards Stephen
  24. what an excellent idea will be adopting that in the future How very true Regards Stephen
