Yep. I was hoping for a temporary repair while the disco is off the road but its just too rotten in that cross member. obviously I cut the big hole but its so rotten on top of the rail forward from here theres nothing to repair to!
-
Well, the rot got worse. I put a rather neat plate on the shock mount but then patching a small section forward of that revealed more and more rot. Its impossible to repair properly with the body on and I worry about the integrity of that A frame cross member. So the 110 is off the road. I will start stripping it and get the chassis ordered from Richards I think. I want to take the body apart as the whole thing will be getting a refurb as the new doors and bulkhead go on too.

Mines the same. Its just really rotten back here. Forward and aft of this spot are quite good! Was your Richards chassis all ok Litch? I think thats the way I am leaning.

Getting a response might be an issue................... -
I keep getting as far as the 'complete purchase' button and then think 'oh, but would x be better than y'!! Its between XD and Richards. XD don't seem keen on communication, a few people have said they have had problems with Richards

Looking throught the hole i have enlarged, theres quite a bit of strengthening behind it to detach and leave in place
-
So quick question re my pics in the first post. As a temporary repair should I just plate over the top of the rot with a patch that goes back to good metal or do I need to cut it out? This chassis is being replaced so this is to get it safely back on the road fairly quickly whilst I fix the other two land rovers! If i was keeping this chassis i wouldnt ask this question.

Not sure. It was @DefenderFixer who had my two old units. I dont know how he got on with them either. -

They are RRC units which I think were a smaller size to the 110? That said if they can recon them then they should be able to do the 110 ones. This was the thread where I tried to get mine reconditioned. https://forums.lr4x4.com/topic/77667-self-leveling-unit-repair/ -
Rear Shock Absorbers - Self Levelling Suspension

I tried to get mine reconditioned. It spat all of its oil out after it had been opened. I gave up and fitted progressive springs. The thread is on here somewhere. I gave the two struts I had away to another member who was convinced he could successfully get them working. Haven't seen him on here since. -
How safe to drive with layshaft bearings on their way out?

It certainly made me think about how bad 'Smart' motorways are if you do have a sudden failure and cant roll to a layby! -

Made it! Set out at 10, arrived just after 3. Now to decide if this disco is worth fixing. -

You even have soundproofing now too. That 90 will be quite refined soon. -
Thoughts and musings on the new defender

But to be fair thats like any defender 110 DC pickup... -
Can you get Nige to post on here Jon? I have had the same thoughts and kinda wanted to keep the salisbury and was considering doing what Sigi suggests. My drum brakes can stay as they are. Quick twist on the adjusters at each service and they work just fine.

How safe to drive with layshaft bearings on their way out?

The layshaft does spin the whole time though doesnt it? I thought it was permanently meshed even if the drive isnt passing through it? I am leaning towards chancing it now though! M25/M3/A303 (roundabouts!)/A30/M5/A30..... or M25/M4/M5/A30... (no roundabouts but harder if I do breakdown!)? -

I guess my worry is, if the layshaft bearing actually collapses will the box jam? I cant imagine a box locking up on the motorway would leave me with a vehicle that is that easy to control!? Plus I suppose I didnt want to sit in a recovery truck during COVID times! -

I could hear 2nd gear knocking a bit on the short drive this morning. 4th is still silent. I am 50:50 about whether I risk driving this back from Hertfordshire to Cornwall! -

haha. We did the same and had a little 1 series.... but 1 series+motorway+water = aquaplany spinning and the final result was no 1 series. I replaced it with a D3... I am an idiot. -

Reverse was still there Ralph when I backed up to park a little earlier. It sounded noisy perhaps but I reversed slowly so not like 5th at 50mph - that just sounded like the box was going into self destruct. I didnt really try it again after that! What happened when you lost those gears? Was it still driveable? I have three cars.... all land rover.... all broken now... -
I have had to travel this evening for work next week - a 250 mile trip. I am away all week. About 100 miles into my journey the D2 (TD5 manual/R380) started making a fairly bad noise. Rotational knocking probably best describes it. Changed out of 5th gear and it went away. Quiet as a mouse in 4th, 1st-3rd were fine too. This leads me to think the layshaft bearings are pretty bad as it is only in 5th gear. It is on about 160k so its done ok to be fair. With not much choice this evening, I did the last 150 miles of this journey in 4th gear running at about 60mph. On Friday I need to make the return journey. What's the likelihood the layshaft bearings will hold up if I don't use 5th and go no higher than 4th gear on a 250 mile run?

Is it not possible to tell from the engine number? They all fall into certain ranges dont they?
-
Its interesting. I only ever really think about chassis swaps in defenderland. But you noone ever says you cant change all of the body panels on the defender with other secondhand ones without a test, so why do i sense some implying that Simon would need to do more with a body swap on a discovery3 compared to what we might do on a defender?
-
Body off to get the engine out (without a LOT of work) so I would put the good body on the chassis with the good engine.

They have a Brooklands look to them.
