  7. As yours is a 1996 Auto it almost certainly is an EDC (Electronic Diesel Control) engine which is fly by wire. There most likely is an airflow meter in the inlet pipe work. This will have a throttle potentiometer on the pedal and an ECU behind the drivers side Kickpanel. However, the kickdown is operated with a cable that runs from the throttle pedal to the linkage at the injection pump and then from the linkage to the auto box. Pete.

I totally agree, I just feel that the way the current license is issued is flawed, as I feel there is a need for practical experience (may be in the form of a proper apprenticeship) as well as the paper qualification. Especially as the licensed engineer is effectively taking reponsibility for 100's of people's lives when he/she sign's the work off. Pete.

  10. And speaking as one who has stopped working in the civil aircraft maintenance world partly because of the new generation of 'Licensed' engineers. A scary number of the 'youngsters' qualifying did know how to operate a screwdriver let alone tell whether a job had been done correctly as they leave school and go straight to college and 'learn' how to pass the exams to become a 'licensed' engineer with very little relevant practical training.   12. The standard springs are 15.4in long when off the vehicle. The fronts are 150lb/in and the rears are 207lb/in. Depending on how much weight you need to carry, landrover spring NRC9448 (blue/red) 225lb/in and 15.3in free length works well on the rear. and I would say that Landrover spring NRC9946 (Blue green) 175lb/in and 15.19in would work on the front. Info from experience with the rears and this for the front :- Clicky Oh and buy genuine springs as the ones made by britpart are not the best quality although a bit cheaper. I would suggest Rough Country standard length shocks from David at LLama 4x4 :- Clicky Pete.
  13. If the light is still on after the keys are removed then I would suspect a diode has failed in the alternator. So either a new alternator or a new diode pack. I would also suggest disconecting the battery ,over night, as it will go flat if the diode has failed. Pete.
  14. According to Ian Ashcroft there is a three legged drive member within the box that can/does fail and leads to a complete loss of drive. Mine still had oil pressure. Pete.

  16. I would read this if you haven't already as it has lot's of useful info on diagnoseing (sp) a failed autobox. Unfortunately when mine lost all drive I needed a new box. Pete.
  17. My experience here might help this was a 130,000 mile box.
  18. Besides smoking does it go all right above 2000 rpm. White smoke can be un-burnt diesel or as Jon says steam. Black would be excessive burnt diesel. Oil smoke tends to be blue. It could be injection timing or faulty injectors or a failed head gasket. Pete.
  19. To change the front prop shaft, with the vehicle on level ground, I would put the handbrake and difflock on and chock a wheel to stop the vehicle moving. Then remove the 8 bolts holding the propshaft to the flanges to remove old shaft, then bolt the new one in place, you may have to jack one front wheel up so that you can turn it to get the flange to line up at the axle end. The bolts are IIRC 9/16 head not 14mm. Pete.
  20. If your refering to the bumper I think you are then it's a Rangerover bumper on a Discovery. . However I suspect that a full wrap around Rangerover bumper might be a bit snug at the wings. Pete.
  21. Mine does this occasionally, (it did it last night). The light is controlled by one set of contacts within the relay and the power to the plug goes through a different set. On mine the plugs work fine regardless of the light operation, to fix the light I just pull the connector off and then re-connect it which cleans the corrosion on the connection and the light starts working again. When I first got mine the relay didn't work at all and when I investigated I found that all the connections had gone green and loose with corrosion, so I cleaned them all up and squashed the crimps a little to make them tighter and since then the plugs have worked every time, just sometimes the light doesn't.   23. I found that the rear trailing arm mounts on mine are not in the same place on the chassis. The offside is 5mm nearer the front of the vehicle than the near side (the chassis is straight and true, well by landrover standards anyway ) This caused the axle to sit crooked and the vehicle to pull to the left slightly. I have used a couple of spacers on the trailing arm to square things up and the pull has gone. Pete
