  1. 1. It is a 109, Less desirable than an 88 by far 2. It is a pickup. The least desirable configuration LR made (unless you need one) 3 It is a straight 6 engine, the least desirable motor used in a Land Rover 4. It is a non-runner 5. all the fun parts of the rebuild have been done to someone elses standard OK it has a galv chassis, but that is about the only thing going for it in my opinion. A wise man once told me that the first offer is usually the best offer. There is somewhat of a renaissance of Series vehicles at the mo so you may capitalise on that. BUt the points above mean that yours will be at the bottom of most peoples shopping lists if they are looking to buy one.
  2. I bought a new one for the job.... that promptly snapped as it was being inserted. So I just cable tied it into position. So long as the system doesn't lose pressure it can't actually come out once it is all in there
  3. I just replaced mine on the trayback after wearing the plate down to just below the minimum Luckily I managed to pick up a good flywheel with an almost new clutch kit for next to nowt.
  4. Yeah, but at least ALL Land Rover derivatives cross the Severn Bridge at the car rate, no questions asked.
  5. I did a photo record of cutting my old one off as a complete lump of flat metal in a distinctive shape (clear in the photos). I then riveted it to the new chassis in a hidden, hard to reach, place on the new chassis before fixing the body on. If there were ever a case of proving it was a direct replacement I reckon it would be hard to argue with the evidence. Mind you, my original VIN number was preceded with the BL symbol so would also be pretty hard to fake
  6. If you don't know then you won't be going :-) All being well I hope to be there for at least one evening (even though I haven't RSVP'd yet)
  7. I really hope you can make it at some point David. Want to book you in to talk about Nav again :-)
  8. My guess is the figure is based on the known number of V5s that have been returned to DVLA or similar as having been scrapped. Every farm I know has half a dozen examples under the hedge "just in case we need some spares". All those examples have never officially been scrapped so still make up a part of the 75% of LRs still running.
  9. Is the clutch slipping? Could also explain all the noise and lack of progress. Being a non-Land Rover engine there is always the chance of something not quite lining up. Just another angle to check.
  10. And a green lane tour is just a small bolt on extra to the weekend as a whole. We have participants who will also be hiking, mountain biking and canoeing in the local area. In addition we are running seminars on expedition first aid, navigation and overland preparation, with orienteering and geocaching activities for people to participate in.
  11. Not ironic at all. My farm (where the event is being held) is on the edge of the park and a short tarmac jaunt to all the great lanes of Mid Wales. I also have a very good rapport with the Parks, am on the local access forum and on close personal terms with all the wardens. If you think we are going to jeopardise this relationship by doing anything untoward within the National Park then you really do not know the organising committee very well and I suggest you do a bit of research before coming out with such silly statements.
  12. Done Not sure they want my results being a farmer who uses his 4x4 greenlaning in the parks :-)
  13. Unfortunately ALL the lanes in the Brecon Beacons National Park are out of bounds now. Can't comment on Snowdonia, but here you are about 10 years too late :-(
  14. How heavy is the boat? My front prop let go on the tow vehicle while the other end of the country. I removed it onm the roadside and towed the challenge truck (3ish tonnes all up) the 220 miles home in 2WD with difflock in with no problems at all.
  15. You would be surprised how little engine bay/wheel arch protection the current generation of challenge trucks are running. It certainly makes cleaning down and field repair work much easier. Bit of a swings and roundabouts type issue.
  16. When I made up mine I more or less made large parts of the various looms from scratch. They are so simple to do it really makes more sense tan buying ready made ones at silly money. Plus you can use connectors of your choice and run extra circuits for non-standard bits. However, it is definitely worth using the standard colours if at all possible. For the blade fuse box I pilfered one off a Discovery 1 200 tdi as it just seemed to work perfectly with the defender circuits, while having loads of extra space for new stuff like heated screens and compressors etc.
  17. It replaced a TD5 servo and is about the same size. Just worked much better in back-to-back comparison. It has been on now for almost 4 years and still fine. I do not know if they ever went into production, mine was one of 2 prototypes. I had a mate working for them and they needed a test mule, right place right time :-)
  18. Sometimes brakes just don't make sense. I never did get the brakes working on my 300 tdi Disco despite changing absolutely every component (bar the hard brake lines) out for new. They worked of a fashion but would not lock a wheel even on gravel. When I rebuilt the 110 I used all new (genuine) parts from the TD5 era and also fitted an uprated prototype servo from Bearmach (a BIG improvement over standard). The 110 brakes are fantastic and I feel more than happy bowling along in motorway traffic at 75-80 mph.
  19. Ahha, so Ashcroft are now making a converter. Was about time someone came up with a simple solution to a common problem. Good on them. And yes, I forgot about the needing new props and cross member issue fitting the 300 in the correct position. Still a better option and easier than sorting a short bellhousing R380
  20. I looked into it when I did mine. If you fit the 300 tdi in the same position as it is in a 300 series defender then you do not need a short bell housing. It also makes fitting the turbo, exhaust, oil cooler pipes and intercooler pipework a simple matter if you use 300 tdi chassis-engine mounts. HOWEVER>>>> to get the gear sticks on the disco to work like on a defender is a ballache. You will need to change the selector shaft (if you can get hold of one) by splitting the box and change the remote housing. I have seen someone modify the selector in situ but needs great skill with a welder IIRC. In the end I didn't bother and worked around it by embracing the Disco gearsticks and modified the interior, the tunnel and seating position in my older 110 to match. The final result is, in my opinion, a nicer place to be and better driving experience than a standard Defender. More elbow room, more leg room, shorter gearstick throw and more comfortable position, and a neat centre consule for storgae of phones and other assorted carp. Pics and more in my thread from a few years back http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=79226&hl=itch
  21. my Ifor Williams trailer was galvanised from new and is now 25 years old and doesn't have even the slightest hint of rust on it despite never being kept indoor. Paint will help how it looks, but will have fallen off long before it has done any extra protecting. PS the galv will lose its shininess pretty quickly too.
  22. Not sure if it has gone yet but there is someone on Facebook Farmers For Sale/Wanted pages looking for an Ifor williams cover for a 90. Based in Exeter.
  23. Sold a truck cab roof and rear panel with more dents than that for £150. It doesn't need to be pretty on a challenge truck If the tub cappings aren't rusty they are definitely worth removing Otherwise I don'y think there is much on there to save. But then one mans trash is another mans' treasure
  24. Cheers Davo, I will pass on your message. I think he flies up from Alice tomorrow. I know he doesn't plan to do anything more than drive down to the Crater from Broome, and then only if the road conditions are fine. By the sounds of it he should have no problems. It should be the rainy season there IIRC and he was worried the tracks would be too wet to drive.
