  1. I just got one of those cigarette lighter extension thingies with 3x lighter socket and 2xUSB, works very well and even came with its own sticky tape to stick it wherever you want. Cost me €12 or so in the local car accessory shop.
  2. Right, so... engine now turns around fine on the starter (disconnected glow plugs and reconnected them et voila ). BUT She won't fire. Sounds like there's no (or very little) fuel when cranking. I'm 99% sure of the timing when I replaced the timing belt, and I don't really feel like taking it all apart to have a peek... Disconnected #1 injector feed line, and it squirted fuel while cranking, but it was hard to tell if it was pressurised. We tried pulling her with another car to start, but the engine doesn't fire. This all leads back to timing, but I lined up all the timing marks as descibed in the Rave and in the guide on this forum, used an 8.5mm drill as a timing pin on the injection pump, ... And the injection pump isn't really something you accidentally turn, so I don't see it having turned. Suggestions please, before I resort to C4 Thanks in advance.
  3. I haven't wired anything like that, no. You do have a good point about the aligning of the input shaft, I completely forgot about that... I really need to stop giving advice in the morning Yeah, you'll probably need the ECU then, unless there's an easy way to detect when it's in right.
  4. The motor can easily be turned with a battery and two wires, so no ECU needed. Depending on the rotation you want, you just switch the wires. It should be fairly easy to wire a switch for this.
  5. I don't see it as a big problem, there's a ****ton of space left anyway. And they get narrowed near the wheels, so the axle mounts should be the same(ish).
  6. I measured it (albeit halfassed) and it was 100".
  7. See... I was thinking of doing the reverse (for legal reasons in Belgium). As far as I can tell, the body mounts may need to be changed, but the rest should somewhat fit.
  8. Probably, yes, but I can't remember even coming close to an earth wire in the process... I'll be sure to check them though.
  9. After being stood still for a week to put in a new rocker shaft and timing belt, my RRC refuses to start. The only thing electric I've touched in the process is disconnect the battery (yes, that's connected again now ) and replaced three out of four glow plugs (the person I'm not that keen on in the back didn't feel like coming out, so I just left it there). When cranking, the interior light dims and flickers, and you can hear the starter trying with a lot of effort, but nothing happens. It sounded like a dead battery at first, so we replaced the battery. Still nothing, so we used some jump leads - even less response. The engine turned around fine manually when adjusting valve clearances, so quite a few turns happened then. All fluids were filled up before even turning manually. The starter was still working fine before I put her in the shop, so I doubt that that's the problem, but I'm not excluding it. Any ideas? I'm sure I cocked something up, but I can't even remotely see what
  10. Try starting off by turning off caps lock, and then rewrite the post without SHOUTING ALL THE TIME. Now I'm deaf.
  11. I've decided to do a rebuild of my 300TDi after a valve got stuck again, and they just can't keep their settings, so I figured something must be wrong. We'll be looking at the camshaft, rocker shaft and anything in between. So, while it's open, anything I can do to, erm, tweak it a bit? Performance camshaft, better injectors, ...?
  12. Security through obscurity only works as a small deterrant - if they want to get in, they will, and it won't take very long.
  13. If you can just copy the card, nothing is secure. (I'm looking into this for the school parking system, damn person I'm not that keen on won't let the students on ). But apart from that it'll take quite some time to crack if implemented properly.
  14. I've heard tales of a bloke in a Mini just taking the gearshift lever with him when he left it somewhere. Sounds like a pretty effective solution I must say, not many thieves walking around with spare levers
  15. The person I'm not that keen on tend to come off when it's a bit warmer out, but yes, they're still there. Still nicely saying 'RR'
  16. That does sound like the ABS. Just put it in 1L and stop worrying about the brake, you shouldn't be touching it anyway.
  17. I can tell you that you'll make your transfer box cry if you do that. So if not for legality, that's plenty of reason to not to it IMO.
  18. I wired them up to the original RRC foglight connectors (and thus also using the original switch in the dash, albeit modified to always work instead of only when the highbeams are on), seems to work very well. The only issue I see with them is that they don't seem very watertight (mounted them on my winchbumper), and the connector at the light has a tendency to come loose when fiddling with the wires But apart from that they are very excellent.
  19. Should be the same, as long as the Defender axle isn't a Salisbury.
  20. Finally got my videos uploaded too, and after this I can start on the second batch of pictures. Thank god I have the one of the only unmetered internet connections in Belgium - Time to go look for some petrol - Second go - After this Q nicked my camera as I had to help with the winching
  21. A few bolts on the rear left portal box sheared. We managed to persuade it back into position with a hammer so we could get her onto the trailer, strapped it all down and drove home. Haven't looked into it any further yet, but we'll probably be replacing all the bolts just to be on the safe side (and hoping there isn't any damage to the gears). Both cars performed very well, and the pictures and videos of Mouse climbing the waterfall bit are rather spectacular Pictures are uploading to the book of faces, I'll link them when it's done (could be a while, Belgian internet connection you see). And a little teaser: EDIT: The link to the first batch of pics
  22. Wouldn't a conical drum work? So roughly this shape: >< I'd think a rope under quite a bit of stress will find the easiest point to roll up on, thus sliding to the bit that has the least rope on it. But note that I'm most likely wrong about this
  23. Saw one playing at the beach in November, and it's eyestabbingly ugly.
  24. There should be a relay somewhere that controls them. Perhaps that's shot?
