  1. you could try annealing the flares after you made them to soften the copper/cunifer so it molds to shape better. rub soap (hand soap) on the pipe and heat until the soap turns clear then allow to cool. i have found that some cheaper copper brake pipes come pre work hardened....
  2. Cheers chaps, my old one was a Rolson! that lasted about 5 years (including a few flying trips into the garden shrubbery). I am tending towards a corded one at the minute as their is nothing worse than getting half way thro a job and the battery goes flat...
  3. My "trusty" rattle gun expired in a puff of smoke and smell of burning electrics today (came in a blue box!), so looks like I'm in the market for a new one. Not bothered if its coreded (must be 240v) or cordless. Suggestions please gentlemen.
  4. Having screwed/glued/bonded and bolted in the rear floor panel in September ish ONLY to have to remove the bloody thing to recover a 1/4 drive ratchet and a chuck key, I can vouch for the efficacy of Tiger seal! If Ronnie from YRM reads this, that nice bit of alloysheet you cut for me is looking very second hand at the mo.......
  5. I kinda snapped the tips of my right thumb, index finger and ring finger, oh and dislocated my middle finger a wee while ago....... Cheers TSD, been using the stuff for years and never realised.
  6. Now that I have functional fingers again (very few finger nails, but what the hell at least I won't get oil under them....) tis time to restart work on the Landrover. I have been looking at various brands/types of silicone sealants and have a very simple question, what is the difference between RTV silicone and generic silicone sealants, other than a serious price premium on the former?
  7. I.. thought I'd take the opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, may the Gods of mechanical fortune be benevolent over the festive period... Best Wishes JeffR
  8. Have you tried "adjusting" the window frame using a length of wood and brute strength and ignorance? When I fitted my doors, got the door bottoms about right then bent the window frame - no amount of buggering about with shims would give a perfect door seal.
  9. Thought this was kinda cute http://www.amazon.co.uk/Land-Rover-Defender-Memory-Stick/dp/B0053Q8S50
  10. Got one in my 110 V8 and can't fault it! Spins the engine over no sweat (even at minus stupid temps) , holds it's charge and been there for a couple of years.
  11. The last time I had that specific problem was when I was testing the brake lights with the ignition OFF. Spent a day and a half throwing my multi meter round the garden and rewiring the entire ffing back end. Did go a fetching shade of pink when I finally worked it out. Wife collapsed in fits of giggles; bloody women, twas her flamin mini that smashed me fingers
  12. Having just watched my wheely bin make a serious, sucessful bid for freedom, it's the same in Northumberland
  13. Sticky plasters, bandages, pain killers, valium, vodka and a glue bag!
  14. Droped a wheel rim and tried to catch it, easy really, cold wet hands and a wet rim = 3 hammer splints
  15. I have, in the past, rebuilt servos from other makes of car, specifically Minis. Splitting the servo was an absolute bugger, but generally found that the problems were always a split or holed diaphragm. Hell for £8, give it a go
  16. I would go one better and say 90%, the other 10% can be put down to the BLUE BOX syndrome! I get a lot of "but they are are carp on fuel economy", to be honest, even a V8 ain't that bad, it's not good by any stretch of the imagination, but my brothers diesel Ford Ranger is worse. Most of the probs I've got are due to previous owners bodges/shortcuts and complete lack of mechanical sympathy. What I keep forgetting is the damn thing is 20 years old and has had a hard life. Like most 20 year olds, it still hasn't decided what it wants to do with it's life yet. Mind you , if it carries on the way it's going, the rest of it's life is going to be very short and very very painful!
  17. "May be cheaper to just use one of those remote servo kits you used to get for old Minis etc" Fitted one of those to the wifes Mini 2 years ago, I wonder if she would miss it?
  18. Simpler way may be to servo the clutch of course, but I never thought of that...
  19. I found that when using silicone to glue seal the swivel retaining plate that I got a better seal if you let the silicone cure for a wee while (till its got a good skin on the bead). also you may find that using a single retaining plate is not enough, I got a local engineering place to make me up some 2.5mm ones as I found the genuine LR parts simply warped, alternatively, use 2!
  20. "has any body suggested fitting a diesel" - get thee behind me satan!
