  1. Come on then, roll up the pictures! I'm gutted I missed it, spoke to Chris on Saturday and (aside from being stressed) everything seemed to be going well.
  2. True, true. I still think it'd be worth giving it a go if the auto comes with a 1.2 T-box and see if you like it - you could always tweak the engine
  3. Not to be the one to disagree regarding transfer boxes, but I think it depends what size tyres you're running. I've got a 1.2 box on my Defender with 235/85s and in my opinion it's perfect. ok, you can't use 5th around town (or really below 40mph) but it's an overdrive gear after all. 4th gear on the auto box is only 5% higher than 5th on the R380. Overall, I like it - I see it as a cheap alternative to get (nearly) the same gearing as the GKN overdrive for much less ££. I suspect your autobox may come with a 1.2 t-box on it - I'd be tempted to give it a go first and see.
  4. Mine cae from Croytech, they're at the shows etc. IIRC it was £55 so cheaper than Lowtension. Same part, VDO gauge etc. When you connect it, don't try to get a signal out of the alternator mounting bolt!
  5. I presume casting's a no-no because of cost - I only want one! I can't reuse the cast exhaust manifold flange off the 300Tdi since it's cast as one with the turbo housing as far as I can see (and I don't have a scrap turbo) and it won't take welding easily either. I could make my own with pre-bends I suppose - what's the life of a m/steel exhaust manifold? I'll not be too impressed if I shell out and find it needs doing again in 5 years, but since the moisture will be boiled off / driven away I guess (hope) it'll live longer than silencers etc. What's the quality like from Janspeed and Powerflow? Any first-hand experience or ideas on cost? I'm aware there's more to manifolds than just piping two flanges together, so I'd like someone who can show me some calcs to suggest that there won't be constructive interference to destroy peak torque or give any other big holes in performance.
  6. That must be a pre-pro spy shot - all the Microsoft stuff I've seen has crashed at least once...
  7. Given recent threads, shouldn't we have a poll?
  8. Seems to me Tonk's got an advantage because Will's got more windows and they're flat or missing - you don't get a crinkly stage...
  9. As was said, more forae means more clicking - not for me! Subdividing the Tech Archive is a good plan too, as is a good search facility.
  10. I'm seeking ideas on where I can get a manifold made up - just 4 into 1 with a decent square flange each end, whole thing shouldn't be much more than 5 inches long. Any ideas on suppliers and cost? It'll have to be bespoke as there certainly isn't another one like it.
  11. What're you up to? 12v relays and a fridge compressor...
  12. Sure it wasn't just the motor over-run? I remember Nick 'adjusting' Si's rear axle so he could fit the trailing arm. It wasn't quite the accurate and precise machine that was needed at the time, even when the solenoids were disengaging as requested...
  13. Much as it hurts for me to say it I don't think the cost of a diesel is justified here, for 5000 miles a year. If you don't mind using WD40 on a misty day, get a cheaper (unit cost) petrol V8.
  14. I agree with 2) and 3) - Brits lead the design and consultancy field but the Japs can produce better stuff (certainly giving better quality control than LR - that's what their reliability stems from, repeatability in production and assembly).
  15. Mr Buster is correct for the way the Europeans (and Japanese, from that) measure engines, considering only swept volume. However, our "Hellyeah" cousins in the USA use the biggest number they can find, and that includes the total enclosed volume.
  16. TGV it! You've seen the Top Gear video where the Overfinch Range Rover outdrags the Porsche ... on the grass? It would have been so different if it had been a humid day or the grass was damp: VROOOOMcoughsplutter"where's the WD40?"... ssst....whawhawha...pssst "try it again" wha wha VRooOOoobuuhwhawhavrOOM "And on that bombshell, GOODNIGHT!" Besides, with modern turbos getting higher and higher temperatures, there's plenty more to come from the humble diesel engine, and it's all about improving efficiency, not just about pushing more fuel through the thing!
  17. Andy, I had a pair exactly where you describe. It's not an acoustically perfect place to put them because there's little enclosed space behind them but... it's a LandRover There's room if your speaker isn't too deep, mine used 3-way speakers like these: I've now got a pair of 6x9s pointing downwards in a shelf above yr passenger's head but there's not really room to sit beneath it. It'll be better when I get round to enclosing the space above the shelf.
  18. I've been mostly releasing smoke from my dash wiring - I've got a rev counter now
  19. Next week's the week to buy - you might have the same chance of getting the numbers, but you'll double your chance of not sharing the prize!
  20. Steve, are these electric compressors? If so I'd be interested to hear where from, prices etc. I can't fit a belt-drive one because the slot on my engine's full of hydraulic pump.
  21. I'm no help with part numbers but I'd say the greatest angular displacement to be on the (rear A-frame or) the front panhard rod. While you've got the hacksaw and blowtorch out...
  22. If a fiver will encompass the small fee then I'll take one! Which type are they? I seem to remember the black ones can split?
