I would go with Mark on this one, put the spare in the boot, they are too heavy for the door anyway. remove the rear mount completely and plug the holes left, I personally think Disco 1 looks better without the wheel on the back door, but hey what do I know I just cut the back of my disco

update.
not much. been busy doing work stuff.
all I have managed to squeeze is was cutting the lower rear panel piece, the new floor panel,
oh and why are brake hoses attracted to angle grinders?

I have done this recently and it is really as simple as you have explained.
I made my own spring seats out of box section though,
my advice to anyone going to do this is to do both sides, if one side is rusty then there is a good chance the other side is just as bad

pull one of the 1/2 shafts out and count the splines, but I am almost sure you have a 10 spline.
