  1. I think the only difference is in the friction plate, the pressure plate is the same IIRC. But yes I think they will fit any 300Tdi engine.

I see the logic there, when the V8 died once it was within 100 yards of a puddle you could kick in the outboard and keep on pluggin' Amazing how resilient petrol outboards are to water (be a bit of a bugger if they weren't I suppose...), it makes you wonder why V8s cause so much trouble. Its early days yet so I haven't "stuffed" mine but there are plenty of stories on RIBnet of people stuffing their whole boat under huge waves and coming out the other side with engine(s) still going fine, after everything (including the air intakes) have been completely under water for several seconds! There was a discussion on there recently about fitting a snorkel to an outboard too...
  4. Yeah you can chop a nice harness in two on the drivers side because I know somebody that did just that with a jigsaw....
  5. The 115hp 2 stroke that my outboard motor has in it would probably get a decent line speed only problem would be that you'd have to winch underwater for cooling

  8. The Discovery Td5 one is a similar unit, but it is not the same as a Defender one and in fact I am not sure but I think there may be more than one Defender type. IIRC the calibration on the fuel gauge is different to cope with different shaped tanks - so it will work (i.e. the engine will run OK) but the gauge will read a bit funny.
  9. Yes it is a single unit with the pump. Yes it is expensive. yes it is a pain in the neck not a common problem (usually fuel pump that fails!!) may be just a wire off or something though...
  10. God's winch, Satan's winch by the sound of it 3.0 ltr twin turbo winch motor that is just #kin insane!!! must be about 280-300bhp makes a 6hp XP look a bit sick

  12. If the starter motor is whirring but not engaging then I would say either the bendix mechanism (the bit that throws the starter gear into engagement with the flywheel) is knackered/seized or you are missing some teeth off the starter ring on the flywheel.

Current draw should be doubled too surely, so giving 4x the power? basic Ohms theory if you double the voltage through a fixed resistance then you will also double the current, and since power = voltage x current - 2 x 2 = 4. or maybe series wound motors behave differently...? Bet the buggers go though, whichever it is
  14. Both. You need to program the alarm plips (key fob) into the alarn ECU for them to work, but after renewing the engine ECU you need to "learn" the alarm code. I think the way it works is that every alarm ECU outputs a unique security code and the engine ECU needs to receive one of these, and it needs to match the one it has "learned", before it will run. Yeah just live in a place where nobody nicks anything like here! Tdi immob use a "spider" system same as a Discovery I believe. Not very robust in terms of nickability though...

  16. clicky solenoid often = flat battery... have you checked the voltage? often if the alternator fails it will work fine on a run but discharging the battery all the time, get in to it a short time later and you just get a click other than that - starter solenoid as described above though it depends on where the click is - the other possibility is the immobiliser spider but leave that until after you have checked the 2 things above see my post in the Tech Archive forum if you need more info on this

I switched to using Mozilla Firefox a while back but the fact that Flash isn't installed with it is irritating, and the automatic update has never worked for me, it would chug away for ages (in one case 2 hours) downloaded a huge amount of data, and still Flash wouldn't work. You can manually download the plugin here: http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/downlo...=ShockwaveFlash save to desktop (930K) and run the .exe file to install it, after that Flash pages will work fine and you won't get the irritating "funny shaped green thing" icon on every other #kin web page The other advantage is that if you have four computers to update like I do it means you don't have to download it four times. You just need to make sure you open the web page in FF not in IE as I think it senses the browser being used to download the right thingy. Anybody who is on a slow connection and doesn't already use Firefox should try it, I reckon it downloads stuff in literally half the time, whether it is better caching or what I don't know but it is much, much quicker than IE and has other benefits like tabbed browsing, the Download Manager etc etc.
  18. Yes it does, because when you fit a new engine ECU you need to "learn" the alarm code even on a non alarm vehicle, or else it doesn't go! New 300Tdi Defenders like mine don't have the dimmer on the light, because they don't have an alarm ECU, because they don't have a Td5. And are all the better for lacking those things IMHO
  19. Steve, If I can venture from my armchair for a moment.... The Td5 vehicles all have an alarm ECU because the Td5 engine ECU requires it to run - simple as that - a security measure. On a non alarm vehicle (like most of them are here, I would have thought any UK vehicle would be alarmed though!) it is just set to a "dummy" mode so it provides the "no you are not being nicked please start on command" signal to the engine as soon as it wakes up. Where did you get a CDL kit from for that price? I was thinking about (and have been for about a year) getting a Falcon one for my 90, but as usual I couldn't be @r&ed getting out of my armchair so I haven't. Every time I go to the back door and find it is locked and the keys are still in the ignition I curse my inertia....

  21. It depends which type is fitted Will. Some of them definitely don't, the black "C42" type for example, which has a single big BMW type connector. You can buy adaptors to/from this though, for a few quid. I think maybe the older pre Td4 type did use ISO's and the Td4's mostly don't because ze Germans became inwolwed unt altered der radiokassetenlinkenlead spesifikation However just to complicate things I think some Td4 head units do use ISOs if they have some of the highline stereos fitted... Also be aware there are 2 different types of aerial connections but again you can get a male/female converter for a couple of beer tokens, to overcome this. Bung up a photo of the head unit and I will see if it is one I know for sure one way or the other
  22. It is a purely electrical thing - there is nothing mechanical inside the door handle - so I would say whatever sensor is in the handle is buggered (to use the technical term). Be prepared for a shock at the cost of a new handle.... I can't remember offhand but I assume you can unlock the door with the key, you can certainly operate the window, if you hold down the "unlock" button on the key fob it should drop the window and if you then put the key in the rear door lock, turn it and hold it over, it should raise the window back up again.
  23. must have been something badly wrong with it then! I have had mine for four years now and previous to that had a 1996MY D1 for three years and can honestly say there is no contest - my D1 had uprated (standard height) springs fitted to improve the handling and the D2 is still better than that was even though it is a basic non ACE vehicle. The ACE (which I have also driven) makes it better still but IMHO adds complexity I can live without, hence the decision not to get it! The D3 is better still to drive though, but having driven several vehicles now, I did think that on bumpy roads (which we have a lot of here) the ride was surprisingly fidgety. I would expect something that heavy riding on independent suspension to have a magic carpet ride but it is really no better than my D2 on slightly oversize tyres - I guess the low profile 17 and 18in rims must ruin the ride a bit. Personally I have seen too many broken ones to buy one just yet - and I still think the back is hideous - but they are nice to drive and there is SO much space inside!! it is the only vehicle I have ever been in where I have got into a vehicle with the seat right back and needed to move everything closer!
