  1. Mmmmm. Kind of like yellow peat then You need wide tyres, like my armchair has. Then you can go anywhere
  2. I believe the PAS box is the same 4 bolt one - STC2846 IIRC the reservoir will be fine - pump will be the same I think (fits the engine anyway so what the hell) only thing might be different would be the pipes but not a massive expense to change if so
  3. Going to wash a bit of mud off the bottom of Dad's 90 in a river then arriving home on the end of a tow rope and having to explain the tide mark half way up the windows is probably one of mine.... Armchairs get so wet when you go wading in them too
  4. I thought that was the clever bit, turn the vehicle on its side to change the clutch
  5. Is that one of them Scrap Iron switch housing things?
  6. You should get yourself an armchair, they don't have a clutch to wear out, no more problems
  7. One less thing to biff on rocks though James I have to be careful with the centre box on my armchair because it can get quite hot and you get funny burning smells off the upholstery
  8. Ah I see.... I wonder if they have an "Australian Top Gear" where they stick a Defender on top of a building and blow it up, drown it, set fire to it, and it still won't die 3rd low and go ... a fine technique works well in my armchair, just gotta be careful you don't lose the TV remote off the side when you drop the clutch
  9. Surprised they managed to get stuck that badly on what must be fairly wet sand - dry powdery stuff you would expect it. Narrow escape though!!
  10. My 90 with original Genuine pads and 100% good discs squeals like hell. Tried copperslip, no effect at all. Now I just live with it, even though it irritates the hell out of me
  11. Prob find the idea was nicked and patented by somebody called Colon and yes he does still make the tea
  12. There is only one X-brake. The "new improved version" is called the Scrap Brake
  13. An essential Scrap Iron Racing holder for storing spare polybushes??
  14. Yeeks Hydraulic power [insane cackle] Now I am worried as my whole winch mount is only 6mm................. I have yet to find anything that presented any risk of stalling my MM in low range - you can tell on mine when it is about to stall (in high range) because the serpentine belt starts to twitter shortly before the valve opens on the pump. I guess if you are using the standard motor you could hazard a guess at the loads involved if the PRV was at 2300psi:- Std MM with ZF pump which I believe pushes out 1750psi pulls 10500lb if you believe the specs So 2300/1750 x 10500 = 13800lb! Which is interesting as 10mm Dyneema is "supposed" to be breaking strain of somewhere around 20,000lb and 12mm should be a hell of a lot more than that......... Has it cracked the motor/gearbox casing or is it just twisted one side to the other?
  15. Worst thing I have seen happen was one that came in to be "fixed" at work The only thing left on the rim was the two bead wires and the rubber around them ... the rest had "Gone" Try bluddy shifting those as well - on a tubeless rim with the double hump - they are a bugger to get off and on a soft alloy rim you can't even attack it with a cold chisel! I think some *very* careful work with the grinder was eventually used - tyre machine wouldn't touch it.
  16. I think 1988 was prob the first MY to use the letter rationally - thinking about the ones I have seen over the years - so EA - 1988 FA - 1989 GA - 1990 HA - 1991 JA - 1992 KA - 1993 LA - 1994 MA - 1995 then it went screwy for some reason.... TA - 1996 VA - 1997 WA - 1998 XA - 1999 YA - 2000 1A - 2001 2A - 2002 and so on - now it is just the last digit of the year used in the vin so my 90 is a 2004 - 4A. Most of the older than 1988 ones were AA's, maybe all I think. Note that some markets - NAS for one - had some different letters used. I don't know anything about those though.
  17. On most if not all track rod ends the threaded end is slightly rounded so as long as you tap it square on the end, you are unlikely to damage any threads unless you really have to batter the **** out of it, and if it's been on there that long, chances are you'll be taking it off to replace it cos its knackered anyway
  18. We had 3 older Land Rovers in our family at one stage, all of which had AA year letters in the VIN and none of them were 1984. One was 1986, the other 2 were 1987. I don't think LR were very particular about what they put on the VIN plates until about 1988 as I have seen a number of others the same.
  19. He isn't called "Colin" by any chance is he...? Just a thought Seems to be a minority view anyway....
  20. I don't know if it would. David Lovejoy reckons he had the back wheels of a vehicle off the ground with a MM once though, pulling out tree roots IIRC. All I could see was the top of the wheels from where I was standing on another pontoon close by, I was a lot lower than the vehicle. I would say from the wheel to wheelarch gap that it must have been at the top of its travel anyway, but couldn't see if there was any daylight. If it wasn't floating I don't think it would have needed much inducement to do so No sign of distress from the MM, but I was starting to worry about the rope (only single lined), and the bit I had the winch hook on to (a 1" thick eye bolt going into the pontoon) was starting to creak a bit too it would be interesting to try posterior levitation but I ain't that convinced that the Bikini mount is tough enough for the job (it's only 6mm) and I don't want to break anything expensive being silly! I was thinking of a loud 90-shaped splash which was why I had somebody in the drivers seat standing hard on the brakes! - there is no chance whatsoever that I am going to post such a picture on here because I don't intend to drop it 10 feet into 6 feet of salt water thank you
  21. Feel sorry then, for the guy here who bought 4 new 33x12.50R15 Grabber MT's from us a couple of months ago, blew two out on a standard sticking out of the ground in one incident, and since then General have stopped making the Grabber MT...
  22. Yeah there was a recall. Come on Ralph you are slipping!!!!
  23. I have seen a few Genuine clutches with problems, seems to be something to do with the pressure plate not lifting evenly, causes difficult gear selection and/or juddering. We had one a couple of weeks ago in one of our vehicles, fitted new clutch, you could hardly get the damn thing into gear, took it out for a look, seemed OK, refitted it, same thing, fitted another new one and it was fine. Nothing visibly wrong with any of the components. The bloke doing it was mightily P&ed off taking the box out 3 times in 2 days!!! I guess I have seen 3 or 4 like this in about 6 years so it isn't common but does happen. The Td5 flywheels should all have been done a long time ago. Unless it was coincidence I don't think a new clutch could cause anything untoward with the flywheel and in any case the cracking problem was only supposed to affect a handful of vehicles that would have a really hard life towing or off road, most vehicles were fine.
