  3. i know him well [i was going to post this yesterday but never got round to it]
  4. i took mine out yesterday to punch out broken shaft i didnt use a spreader just light preasure with a pry bar ,on refitting i used the journal bolts to pull it back in. i fitted a detroit locker a year ago using the same method to shim the backlash i think the old engineers [im 60] tend to complicate things go for it. the only problem is to alter the backn lash you have the pull the bearings off which is another story and learning curve.
  5. i see la supertrx sell the spacers in sets of four unlike some other sites who sell them in pairs, anybody seen them in pairs cos i need two and i cant find any pairs.
  6. the clever boys alter the imfo on the ecu as well its common pratice in the dodgy end of the motor trade, it also happens at the top end there is a hire co in london that hires out top marque cars[ferraris e.t c.] and they spike them beore there sold ive seen it done.
  7. go salisbury and follow i think it was diesel jims post on the forum for converting to disc brakes i followed it and it was a doddle . i have broken one shaft but it was totally driver error that caused it .
  8. seems kike you might have a crankshaft problem ie big end bearings which is not good news. any decent mechanic or knowlegable enthusiast should be able to say yea or nay if its yea its rebuild time.
  9. its a common dodge in the motor trade to remove rear prop when there are problems with a part exchange freelander and trade it on mostly never to be seen again , i believe they are predominently front wheel drive anyway
  10. mines much the same detroit locker 4.5 je engine that has twisted shafts in the past but it says alot for salisbury that although they look like a cork screw[slight exageration] thy havent broken yet .inspecting the shafts has become as routine as dipping the oil ,its the flanges that give me the problem.
  11. is there a problem in welding the outer part of the drive flange to the new shaft annd new flange on a salibury axle ?i know the heat might alter the temper of the metal in the shaft and flange, but has any one done it.just wondering ?????
  12. my son is going to get a new freelander diesel any feedback on them will be appreciated cheers merrick
  13. i was in libya in the late 60s when a certain col gaddafi had a a revolution and deposed king idris, we left loads of kit there mostly disabled ie run with no oil until it went bang. i was "stuck" for 3 months until we eventualy got out to cyprus .i wouldnt mind betting some of the motors are what we left behind.
  14. in that case i still want you as my mentor plus the hybrid
  15. how goes it with the mega squirt all sorted ?
  16. i think you might be refering to fitters rather than mechanics we dont want to start ww3 here
  17. it is adjustable but its not easy most of the time you have to move the crown wheel a little closer to the pinion using shims .the only problemis pulling the bearings off [after you got the diff out of the housimg using a spreader] puttig the bearings back on and checking backlash again if not right start again.research it and do it you will be proud of yourself good luck
  18. i know you are not supposed to do it but lay the bottle down you can often get another hour or two of welding out of it
  19. they make at the mo about 10 squid apiece at the mo
