  1. already got it planned into memory map, and have my gps linked up to it as well, so shouldn't stray off it. i don't like to go "off piste" where lanes are concerned - unless i feel that the obstacle is beyond either mine or my trucks capabilities. if i do need to stray from the path, then it's usually to straddle a rut that's too deep.
  2. that's all i need to know - thanks.
  3. As per the title really, i am planning to traverse the Strata at some point over the next few months, and was just wondering if i should consider any extra protection for the Disco - standard 300tdi ES at the moment. I have been pondering diff guards, and i will remove the side steps before we go to give it some extra clearance. Needless to say i will not be trying it on my own, as there are about 3-4 of us planning on going - 2 x 300's, possibly a couple of TD5 Disco's and a Defender 90. Sorry if it's been done to death, tried the search but didn't really find what i was after
  4. sooo, can anyone clarify the cost to get in?? had a look on the B&W website and there is no sign of the prices...
  5. i was thinking the same thing lunchtime actually........
  6. Defender was basically the name that LR gave to the 90/110/130 in about 1990 ish, make it sound more modern. As for getting it running, why not crack off the injector pipes at the injectors, use the lift pump to prime the system, then retighten them and try to start it off a very well charged battery, it should fire up. Hammerite should be ok in the engine bay, you may get some problems by the exhaust manifold with heat, although you could use high temp paint down there. TBH though, i wouldn't worry too much about draining the oil out of the old engine anyway, as it's coming out. Wait until the new one is in before doing the axles/box etc, at least you can get them warm on a test run then. You say it's on the garden? How are you planning to get the old lump out, and the new one in? As you are going to need a hoist of some description. Sound deadening is personal choice really, but i would think along the bulkhead is the best place, along with the underside of the bonnet. You could always do the inside of the bulkhead, under the floor matting, although if it gets wet, then you will effectively have a soggy sponge rotting the floors from the inside. Spray on underbody shutz has some sound proofing properties, so it could be worth spraying the underside of the cab area with that, whilst it's dry. There is an excellent guide in the tech archive to converting to 200tdi power, well worth reading. Some of the steps can be altered to suit.
  7. that should answer any question about if it's worth fitting or not....
  8. what about an audi quattro gearbox? they are in line engines. or even the front diff from a sierra, they were bolted to the sump, and had the one driveshaft pass through the sump. i'll dig a piccy out to show you.
  9. pull the seal back and you should find some bits of metal hanging about inside. should be fine to do this.
  10. that much wear in the tyres would not affect the driveshafts. it does sound like a cv joint has gone to me, from the fact that you can A) drive in diff lock B) turn the wheel when the diff is locked. the only other possibility is that a half shaft has gone.
  11. on the back of the lh side of the cylinder head i do believe. iirc 17mm spanner with a single blade terminal on it.
  12. now that would look nice with a v12 and some nice chrome side exit pipes and manifolds....
  13. already got my brake cleaner ready for the degreasing session (hopefully this weekend - her indoors permitting ) the branch on the inlet pipe i am planning to cut off and weld a plate over, or i may just get another pipe from a non egr model
  14. try www.coilsprings.co.uk they can supply any spring for any vehicle at any length/poundage. as the website says; * Want your Defender 90 4" higher for crushing mountain bikers - No Problem * Want to put a 6.2 diesel engine and winch in your Range-Rover and still have 15” ground clearance? - We’ve got the spring * Want to smuggle diesel into GB in the back of your Discovery? We’ve got the Springs * Want to tow a field gun with a 110 L/Rover with 6 fully laden troops? -We’ve got the springs. * Want to rustle 6 sheep in the back of your 4-Trak? - We’ve got the springs * Want to go hawking in the desert with 6 sheiks in a Land-Cruiser? - We’ve got the springs. * Want to radically lower your Freelander down to crumpet pulling level? - sorry we’re good, but not that good. i like the last one :)
  15. do you need to remove the throttle pot on the 300 tdi mechanical pumps, or just leave it on there and disconnect it?
  16. part number lists are a bit long to grab and post. pm sent
  17. rear axle; front axle; do you need the half shaft/cv joint pics too?
  18. my old one used to suffer with this, a swift bang on the handle end of the key with the pal of your hand, with it in the ignition always used to solve it.
  19. ebuyer could be worth a look for those..
  20. That's broken up quite a boring day - nice one, and i hope she recovers soon.
  21. and it would have been cheaper to have kept it than bought the german money pit....
  22. although you can get adaptors to extend usb range using standard cat 5 cable now
  23. how's that? 3.5 v8 disco or, 3.9 v8 rrc
  24. I agree with the trailer's tramlining, Ifor Williams' are the worst, they seem to be just the right width to sit in one or the other, leading to some interesting behaviour. Don't seem to notice the Disco tramming though.
