  1. 75% convinced myself to source another box, and replace the clutch at the same time now. In the long run (and with the time scale i have) i think it may be a better bet TBH. Any pointers as to how long it should take roughly to swap the box??
  2. 75% convinced myself to fit another box now, just to save the hassle of diagnosing an internal problem.
  3. numbers in italics have usually been superceded for some reason. if you choose the number in italics, and push ctrl+d, then it will give you the supercession chain.
  4. My new disco is a '94 300 tdi, and it has no drive even with the difflock on. You can push the clutch down, and it feels like the gears are engaging, but there is no forward or reverse motion. When in 3rd it sounds like a lot of grinding from inside the gearbox - however, the gear lever feels "sloppy" - not very precise. Is there anything i should look at before condeming the gearbox? My first thought is that the linkage has come adrift somewhere, and its not actually engaging. Help! Thanks all
  5. pulled a disco 20 odd miles on an ifor williams with mine last year with no problems, manual 'box though.
  6. I may be getting hold of a 300tdi disco, which has allegedly got a broken 'box. i thought that the R380 was strong compared to the LT77. Is there likely to be a common, easy fix to this, or is it gonna be a new box time? If it's a new box, then does anyone have an R380 for a Disco going spare? cheers
  7. what about powder coating it in wheel silver type colour? otherwise i would consider something along the lines of hammerite smooth - although rather expensive that way.
  8. It's been a long time coming - but expected none the less. at least they have acted now, rather than waiting for someone to be killed on the site. TBH Rhayader is a tourist trap anyway, the closure of this place won't really affect the local trade much, don't forget that Strata Florida is only "round the corner and up a bit" from there. Odds are there will be a hefty fine, and it will stay closed - i can't see him investing in the sort of things that a well run site needs, although if he did tidy it up, and get the proper stuff in place, it could be a good site.
  9. not got any pics at the moment IIRC they are on my old phone. but i do know of a 90 fitted with a galv 110 roof rack, and the do overhang quite a bit at the front, almost as far as the front of the vehicle. i will try and find the picture. however, in order to place anything of any weight in the front, it does need support legs down to the front wings
  10. Any recomendations as to which gasket to get? currently i have the pressed ally style one on there, and i think it's sprung a leak, as the Disco had leaked on the floor this morning - no sign of any damaged hoses. I had a look underneath, and it is coming from the back of the engine somwhere, as it has run down the gearbox x-member. Why do i suspect the inlet gasket? When i did the head gaskets last year, there was a small amount of damage to one part of the gasket, at the back of the engine, nothing major, just a slight crush injury. I know there are two types available, the pressed tin one (currently on there) or the composite cardboard style one. Which one is the best to use? Cheers all
  11. there is a company called interparcel.com that will ship to europe for a reasonable cost. maybe worth enquiring with the shop if they will allow stuff to be collected by a courier if you arrange it? alternatively, you need to have someone you can trust to have the stuff delivered to, who will pack it up and ship it out in one parcel. not easy these days for obvious reasons.
  12. make sure of a range of sockets of 30mm + sizes too IIRC 30/32/34 should suffice. Halfords stuff is good, but do they have a Halfrauds in SA??
  13. i was looking into these last year. i would imagine that for the extra outlay (if there is any) then LED would be the way to go, due to the lower power consumption.
  14. mine seems to have stayed the same this year at £230 f/c for the disco. Norwich Union quoted in the well unhappy territory - £960 fully comp for the same vehicle!!! Must be something to do with paying Bruce Willis and co to do the fancy ads.....
  15. usual size is 3/16" - should be supplied on a 25 ft roll.
  16. what about enamel paint? that's usually quite hard wearing.
  17. nice work, could be quite vulnerable being on the side though? is it just that white dome? if so, then surely fitting direct to the roof would be better? especially if you have a roof rack as that would protect it better?
  18. it'll be more like; "Fluffy Bunny Killing Polluters choke M6 to Death in School Run Chaos"
  19. did you have mr.mackey from south park as your tutour? m'kay.
  20. going to make one (eventually, lol) have got some straight pipe that will replace the box, and a joiner section to mate it up to the rest of the system. going to reuse the inlet side to keep the correct flange joint. not really concerned about acceleration noise more the cruising at 55-60 mph noise - if it's going to be too intrusive then i probably won't bother.
  21. Does removing the centre box on a 3.5 V8 make them much louder? I was planning to make a removal pipe for mine, but was wondering if it will be too loud when cruising.
  22. doesn't the ecu need to be reset as well when changing from air bags to springs? seem to remember reading it somwhere that it needs to be changed from "air" setting to "coil" setting
  23. hmmm, i've got to do the 200 to 300 conversion first - better get some and skip straight to early TD5 then.....
  24. just hitting 134k in my 1990 3.5 v8. new head gaskets last year when i got it, other than that - nothing
