An old sip i once owned was really fussy when it came to kinks and it would have a huge effect on the welders performance (similar to what you describe), get the torch held right and it would do a good job, cheap little upgrade for you would be a metal torch liner, makes a big difference
How to put this nicely, the cosmo welders dont have the best reputation... how old is it? could be an issue with the liner, try keeping the torch leads (between torch and welder) straight and seeing if that improves things as they dont like being kinked especially on the cheaper machines
I have some rebuilt axles for sale here if its of any help to you http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=71042 guessing would have to send them by pallet seeing your location
I saw these on the rpi site, pitty about the price http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stainless-steel-LPG-Tank-Land-Range-Rover-Disco-V8-/150577916025?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item230f24a879
If you want a chuckle when i took the disco in for tracking after replacing all the rod ends the chap was there trying to track it on the arm from the drop link to the axle, i kept telling him you need to adjust the rear link between the two hubs, in the end i ended up doing it myself in front of him
If the vanes of the turbo look undamaged and there is not excessive play in the shaft i would clean up the oil, put the pipes on properly and see how it is, how much oil was there exactly? be unusual if there wasnt some and if you dont routinely remove and clean the pipes it may be just a normal amount which has built up over time
I did also consider sticking with a v8 but the fuel costs are outrageous and by the time you convert to megasquirt/jolt, convert to lpg etc its just not really worth it when i could drop in a tdi for less and get significantly better economy plus an lpg tank would take up precious load space inside or be a worry if outside when offroading
I have a complete 300 tdi discovery here i can use as a donor so parts are not an issue, at this stage i havent yet bought a rangerover im just looking in to what is possible as for a long time have been after a tax exempt landrover but wanted something a bit more civilised than a series hence looking at a rangerover just at this point im trying to suss out what conversions are possible without effecting its tax exempt status as going to the letter of the law (according to the dvla site) the chassis has to be unaltered, moving engine mounts isnt a big deal but if the dvla wanted to be funny about it.....
It would hurt to do a double flare where there should only be a single flare yes as one is convex the other is concave as you will see in this picture http://www.andyz28.com/1lecd/brake%20lines/flares.jpg it needs flaring to match the existing or it wont seal properly
Not in a position to check at the moment so could someone tell me whether the early rangerover has a bolt on gearbox x member? i dont suppose anyone has pics of a pre 85 rangerover chassis being altered to accept a 300 tdi do they?
Pitty i was hoping they would be the same or close enough so that a conversion plate could be used instead of relocating mounts, reason being i was trying not to alter the chassis at all so as to keep it all legitimate for tax exempt status
Will a discovery 300 tdi engine and r380 box inc transfer box bolt straight in to an early 70's rangerover using existing chassis mounts or will mounts need altering? thanks
I had a similar idea for the project as the paint is fairly faded, if you take your time with the prep work and then wet sand it when done you should be able to get a really nice finish even if it is rollered on
