  1. and now for the real world experience: Britpart CVs fitted for 3years, 30k miles. Tuned 300tdi with enthusiastic driver. Off road and on road, towing some seriously large things and taken part in the odd traffic light grand prix. Not broken either.
  2. Both! Southern Coatings did my chassis powdercoat and it's still on there as good as new
  3. buy mine, I'll even throw in an auto backplate for the engine!!
  4. It was painted with Frosts manifold paint (only one type listed in their catalogue. It has peeled off some of the galv where I haven't 'keyed' it particularly well but I'm not fussed. Thanks for the comments chaps, I didn't hold much hope of it working tbh, just making the flanges took long enough - holesawing through 6mm steel isn't easy, but I'm lucky the old man has one of those really old quality pillar drills. I'm just pleased it works and we managed to keep it all straight throughout the welding process. The only thing I forgot was a bung for the lambda sensor for the Meqasquirting
  5. I have managed that speed on mine and they're ok still. Might be a dodgy batch?
  6. oh go on then The packaging of the engine is tricky as underneath the exhaust manifold is the exhaust rockers, and you need to be able to get the cover off still, ideally witohut removing the manifold. I have just about managed it but you have to be really careful with the cork gasket. I know the welding isn't perfect but it is suprisingly hard wleding round things
  7. well I took DirtyDiesel's advice and bought a selection of elbows and pipe, fabricated some 6mm flanges and went for the 4-2-1 design. I spent a whole weekend cutting and welding pipe and elbows and the result is a manifold with 2 seperate flat mating faces that haven't twisted, with both 1&2 and 3&4 linking into each other and then into a big collector to link into a 2a downpipe. And it worked! The engine runs cooler on the back cylinders now and holds its power for longer. It also noticeably quicker on pickup.
  8. It's something I want to do to my 2ltr as well mate. Megasquirt weekend?!
  9. I don't think modifying it is going to help your insurance. I think the Freezer is right here, if your only 16 and undertaking a PS conversion you may be a little lightweight in the engineering experience required. I don't class myself a quality fabricator but I am an engineer and there is a shed load of things to take into consideration when doing this. It's not a simple case of chop the chassis and bolt the box, and it'll be ok because I can weld with my SIP migmate 140 . PS isn't necessary anyway unless you're running massive tyres, the trick is to keep the vehicle rolling when turning the steering - it becomes alot easier than trying to turn the wheel stationary.
  10. mine boosts to 1.2bar, I have a good intercooler and pipework with no leaks. The diaphragm in the pump is a1/4 turn up. the EGT never gets above 650. Been like it for years now.
  11. This is something I am considering. It appears the transit has a seperate ECU for the engine, but whether or not this can be coaxed to work on it's own is a bit unclear. Having tried this 2.4 DUratorq in the transit I think it would make a lovely engine if we could work out how to make it run, they sell for about 700-1000 pounds on ebay and make a lot of sense IMO
  12. not just galv that's a problem, it the powder coat on top. I don't want to disturb it and end up having to get the area recoated
  13. Is it possible to fab up some engine mounts for a V8 to mount onto a 300tdi chassis. Reason being, I don't want to modify the chassis
  14. If a new belt has just been fitted I would strongly suggest rechecking the timing is correct as per Les Henson's guide in the tech archive.
  15. I would say it all depends if you like the classic feel to driving a good original one. I use mine a fair bit, granted the gearbox does take a bit of getting used to after the Defender, but undertsanding how to drive it helps. Mine certainly has no problem keeping up with traffic. I would rather have something that felt like a Series 1 than a RRC trying to be one
  16. Lwb Series ones rock! But that one does need some serious dismantling and returning to near original spec.
  17. yeah mine did! I sold it and kind of wish I hadn't now.
  18. Lies everywhere, the worst council anywhere for this.
  19. Signed, they've been doing what they want for years, as you say despite protest.
  20. I just happen to have a backplate and flywheels and bolts for sale, in the for sale section
  21. I highly reccomend Pegasus, top chap is Paul and he was helpful when I was rebuilding my Series 1 axle a few years back.
  22. That's a stubby R380 shown for a 200tdi. The Defender R380 I think is the same as the Disco, though could be wrong.
