mad_pete
I bought a Smith’s 52mm voltmeter for the dash but the glass is clouded a bit on the inside. Anyone know a refurb company for these gauges please ?
miketomcat
From memory it is possible to remove the bezel and glass clean and refit. Some twist to a set point then prize off. Others have tabs or indents to prize over. Mike
Bowie69
Yep as above, the glass can come out quite easily for most gauges.
mad_pete
Mine seems to involve prising the outer ring off. I had a go but it doesn’t seem to want to bend out and I’m into breaking something territory with the amount of force I’m starting to use. I’ll post a picture. mad_pete
The front wraps round, needs prising off and then pressing back afterwards.

smallfry
When you look at the rear of the bezel, does it have tabs that fold over the main case, or is the whole perimeter rolled (right word ?) over. If its the former, it should come off by twisting it...…………...like a light bulb. However, I usually find there is some sealant/adhesive used too. mad_pete
It’s the whole perminter is rolled over. I’ve tried gentle prising but it’s not going for it.

smallfry
Can see the problem ! I must confess I have not seen a Smiths gauge like this. TIM maybe ? Also looks a bit deep for a Smiths voltmeter. Is the main case plastic or metal ? Would probably cost more to have it refurbed than to buy new ? mad_pete
It only needs the glass out and cleaning or replacing so I was hoping for maybe £20 to refurb. New seems about £80.
steve b
You could try a local jeweller , an ultra-sonic clean may do it intact . The older ones have bayonets and release notches , so once loosened come apart easily . I've used a small round ended flat screwdriver to work round enough until it comes apart but it's fiddly and if the outer edge gets a wrinkle ...well you get the picture cheers Steve b
daveturnbull
In construction that looks a bit like the TD5 speeds I've recently prized apart. It is a right PITA, but possible. My method was to get some small nose pliers in to try and straighten out the rolled edge at the back, then shortly before losing the will to live, get a little bit brutal and prize it off with a screwdriver. mad_pete
In the end I decided to up my level of persuasion to say a large hack saw as the screwdriver prise method wasn’t doing it for me and I like my fingers. so I attacked the bottom of it like an angry badger (and it shows) and off it came. I don’t think the bottom marks are visiable when mounted and the glass cleaned up ok so that’s close enough for me. The gauge was only £8 from a boot sale.
Snagger
A bit late now, but Holden Vintage and Classic do a lot of Smiths gauges and bezel/glass kits.
mad_pete
Well I could certainly replace the bezel. How do you fold replacement ones on ?
Bowie69
Looks like they just have small tabs : https://www.holden.co.uk/displayproduct.asp?pCode=070.151 That's just one as an example.
mad_pete
Grabbed one and it doesn’t fit unfortunately. It’s not deep enough.
mad_pete
Gave up and put on as is. Looks fine I think . That’s the raptor replacement binnacle with black surround which I’m pretty pleased with.
