miketomcat
What with everything else that's broken this year, I booked an MOT for next week so immediately the engine started sounding a little more clattery. Well now it's really clattery from start up when cold. It quietens down once warmed up a bit. Sounds front end but performance doesn't seem to be effected. toenden
Loosend front pulley maybe? /mads
miketomcat
Interestingly having had to stop it for about an hour and a half it re-started still quiet. So it is definitely only when it's cold. Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to look at it till sat. Mike
Daan
Surely you have rebuilt one of your spare engines by now?

miketomcat
Had a quick look this morning, I think it the water pump. 🤞 Mike
Jon White
300tdi? I’ve seen one where the water pump failed and although not leaking allowed the shaft to walk back and forth such that the pulley retaining bolts were hitting the pump body. Made a terrible noise! fmmv
Water pump is probably the least it could be. You must have really irritated some deity though.

Bowie69
Collapsed idler bearing? New/second hand timing cover and belt/tensioner required? That's not good, but as you hint, it could have been worse.....
miketomcat
The helicoil that has been put in the timing chest has pulled out jambing the idler into the casing and cover. Need to replace the cover, chest and belt/idler/tensioner. Fortunately I have most of the parts but may need some instant gasket here and there. Snagger
It could have gone far worse.  Must have made a racket, though.  Strange that it quietened down as the engine warmed up - I’d have expected that to be fairly consistent for a given rpm. Daan
I am surprised the belt survived that, and did not come off the pouly. It is indeed your lucky year!
miketomcat
I had to drive it for three days making a hell of a racket. I had a horrible feeling it was timing belt related, but the once warmed up thing made no sense. I'm grateful it didn't destroy the belt and leave me stranded somewhere. It's all stripped and I've collected the parts off the other engine, so tomorrow hopefully get it back together and running. Mike

miketomcat
All back together and running, we'll gloss over the fact I had to use a second hand belt (not the one that was trying to escape through the front cover) fortunately it hasn't done many miles and its running on the pulleys from engine it came from.
