Shackleton
Folks we're all bailing into a pals Td5 110 SW tonight for a wee trip west to catch some surf. There's a spot thought that may require a fairly long wade. What's the safe wading depth for a 110 Td5? I'm fairly sure the water wont be more then about 2ft deep, a standard Defender will handle that once a bow wave is maintained won't it? Retroanaconda
I believe the standard stated depth is 500mm, half a metre. Which in real measurements is about 19-20"
western
& put the wading plugs in before you leave home. entre the water get a good bow wave formed & drive steady so it doesn't break up, the bow wave will form a depression under the engine. Shackleton
Cool, thanks Aren't the plugs put on the truck from the factory? We'll be forgetting it if they aren't cause I don't got no spares...
western
the plugs are normall stowed either in the tool roll or with the owners handbook, if you can't find any you'll only need 1 for the clutch housing, the engine doesn't need one as the timing case is sealed. SteveG
except that TD5's don't have wading plugs
western
except that TD5's don't have wading plugs is there not 1 in the flywheel/clutch housing then ? I know the timing case hasn't got 1 that's why I mentioned it above.
martinhollings
except that TD5's don't have wading plugs there is one in the bottom of the bellhousing and there is also one about 2" away that is used for the seting of the timing well thats what my disco has and i would say that a defender will be the same
smo
None of my TD5's were supplied with wading plugs, nor ever had any fitted/removed.

steven Hart
Mine had wading plugs with it just had nowhere fit it. LAnd-Rover Recommend No deeper than 500mm with-out proper wading kit( Snorkel Axel Breather, ETC)
T1G UP
Mine had wading plugs with it just had nowhere fit it. LAnd-Rover Recommend No deeper than 500mm with-out proper wading kit( Snorkel Axel Breather, ETC) TD5's will wade alot more than 500mm. BUT the ecu is under your seat! 500mm for a standard lr is enough to get through. whats the fasination with getting wet anyway? most people don't like going through a puddle in there euro boxes and there alot more water tight than a land rover! crwoody
I've had mine in a deep ford up to the door handles, a bit scary as it started to float until the footwells filled up with water! Raised air intake and breathers certainly helped here. Check afterwards though that the seatbox (driver side) is not full of water, UCU may not like it! It's also worth while keeping a check on the bearings around the front of the engine - belt tensioner, fan etc, I have had to replace a couple on mine after the grease washed out, the seals don't seem that good.
