For Android, there's UK Atlas, which used to be OS Atlas for £1.99 which gives you 10k, 25k, 50k and 125k os mapping of the whole uk. Or there's UK Atlas Lite which is free and just missing the 25k map. It requires internet to load the mapps, but sheets can be cached to be used offline...

If you're ever over here in Oz, HEMMA do a down-load application for Ipads that is first rate and at a reasonable cost, it covers all of the main and off-roads and is very comprehensive and does not rely on satellite or internet coverage. Julie swears by it (she's the navigator) and uses it in conjunction with the Gammon and Terratrip - so far we have never been lost or wondering just where we are.

Thanx for the conformation of this product, I downloaded it, not used yet. Just done lots of research and decided that is the way to go, with Hemma.

Dad,

Caching is easy, press the 'sheets of paper' icon on the top right, then 'select areas for download'. It helps if you zoom out a bit first so you can see the whole area you're requesting. Pick the maximum zoom you want (this is the detail vs file size decision) and then leave it chuntering away on Wifi.

When my tablet "became broken" on our last Spanish trip, we ended up downloading 400MB of maps over the free wifi in a foreign McDonalds somewhere...
