sussex-landy
Does anyone have any experience of other gearboxs for the series 3 that give 5 speed, not sure if any of the defender ones are straight swaps onto the V8 engine without lots of welding and buggering around. thanks robert
Gremlin
Basically none fit..................without buggering around............... G
Phil Hancock
IMHO the one that needs the least buggering about would be a 4 pot defender LT77 with an adaptor plate to join it to your V8.
Gremlin
Yep, but its still quite a job............... G

Well he's already got the adapter plate... Anything can be made to fit, LT77/R380 are much of a muchness but you need the Defender tail end. sussex-landy
Not as easy a swap as I was hoping. Thanks Robert
RobotMan
I quite fancy an 8 speed auto from a late model L322.

Boris113
Have you considered fitting an overdrive instead? What is it that you are trying to achieve, a wider range of gears or better motorway cruising? The extra power from the V8 wouldn't have a problem with a change in diff ratios either. zim
My series 2a has a series 3 gearbox with overdrive. I also have RRC 3.54 diffs in. 3.5 v8. I can sit quite comfortably on the motorway at 60 - 65ish Gordon

I was going to make the same suggestion - it has a similar step up as 5th on a LT77 or R380, but is simple to fit with standard parts and also allows the "splitting" of the lower gears to give 1st and 1.28, 2nd and 2.28, 3rd and 3.28 as well as a new top gear. That can be handy on hills.
Phil Hancock
HRTC would be more robust, but as said it depends on what the OP wants to do etc.
tiagoc
LT85 from a Santana
Phil Hancock
Drooool. Plus the 3429cc 6 pot diesel to go on the front.
Spongie
LT85 is probably the easiest fix as was fitted to the v8 in defenders but you'd still need to do something about your front axle having UJs rather than CVs with the permanent 4wd drive train. tiagoc
The spanish LT85+LT230 is 4x2+4x4.

Jon White
" you'd still need to do something about your front axle having UJs rather than CVs with the permanent 4wd drive train." Why? I've been running permanent 4wd on a series front axle for donkeys years. This is a myth - you dont need to upgrade to cv's at all. Snagger
Try driving with 4wd selected on your Series transmission and feel how the steering behaves on tight corners. You will soon want CV joints.
