Help with insurance at 20

Sorry if this has been asked before

I'm after some advice on getting my defender 90 300tdi (97/98) insured. I've read quite a few forum posts but none are up to date. What are the best and cheapest ways to get myself insured? as a 20 year old.

Van insurance/classic/standard. And with what companies are people finding cheapest for under 21.

Thank in advance.

Im 21, so my insurance has just dropped! yay!

When i was 17 my first car was a 1988 90 with a 200tdi transplant. With the engine declared my insurance was 2100 with the NFU.

When i was 18 i had (aswell) a 200tdi discovery, completely standard, and the insurance was a staggering £3027 with NFU

Now im 21, i realised buying old banged out motors is daft and expensive. I have a TD5 90 which costs 1100 to insure with the NFU but im insured for everything, business, towing, abroad etc etc etc.

You should look into RAC insurance, they are pretty much the cheapest around, compare the market .com is your friend. My best mate insured a 200 90 at 18 for £2000 with them.

When ever im doing insurance quotes, RAC always seem cheapest. I go with NFU because i know if there ever was an accident, they more often than not pay out with very little questions asked. They also quite often don't charge more for modifications.

You can't get classic insurance untill your 21 with most insurers i believe.

Mental prices! When I was 19 my Defender (90 hardtop) was insured with Footman James. Was about £600 if I recall correctly. Changed to Adrian Flux the year after at about £450 and now at 23 I'm paying £350 a year full comp with Flux. Unlimited mileage, and I can drive other cars third party.

Have you thought about either going third party fire and theft or doing pass plus?

This should reduce your insurance. Even if you only do TPFT for a year it shouldn't be as expensive as fully comp.

Though I could be wrong as my experience is a few years (14yrs) out of date from when I was 19!

I have had my 90 insured with the NFU since I was 17 and have always found them to be helpful and sensibly priced. From reading other reports I think it depends on your local branch with the NFU, although when I was 19 they wouldn't let me put my civic type r on the same policy but I struggled with most company's with that.

So obviously, use all the big comparison websites (Opera Singer, MeerkatManor, Supermarket, Tesco - using a dedicated email address), as well as the usual suspects that advertise in the back of the LR comics. Then try all the ‘young insurance specialists’ - probably a waste of time as they will see 300 Tdi as = BIG whizzy fast rocket-ship Turbo. Finally, keep an eye on Moneysavingexpert.com ‘s young drivers insurance guide for up-to-date tips. Remember that specialist/classic Land Rover insurance might not give you NCB – unless you make it clear that it’s your only car.

Once you have quotes that are only bordering on extortionate, get on the phone to them and haggle, play them off against each other. Should knock your quote down a couple of hundred quid anyway. Remember you are the customer, do not appear ‘desperate’ for a decent quote, and have no hesitation in walking away.

Don’t forget to limit your mileage too - a lot of people pay for 11k a year when they could get away with 7k.

Don’t even bother with 3rd party only (fire+theft) – won’t save you any money these days.

Finally, when you turn 21, make sure fully comp entitles you to drive other people’s cars.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Matt

I have been with NFU on a variety of Land Rovers since I was 17 and they have always been helpful, especially when I kept ringing up to declare modifications/ask questions. Their prices may not be the cheapest but when I had a crash 3 years ago, they forked out straight away.

I rang to get a quote the other day but they didn't like the idea of a galv chassis and a roll cage so I'm waiting to hear back.

Adrian Flux have always given me good quotes also, usually about £150 cheaper than the NFU but when I asked a couple of years ago, they don't give 3rd party on other vehicles unless you are over 21.

Another vote for Adrian flux. I got my 90 when I was 18 I'm now 21 and they have always been the cheapest. Get yourself a lro mag and phone the company's in the back of that and if your going to start modifying your 90 I personally wouldn't bother phoning the likes of direct line elephant ect because they don't have a clue. ( I tried explaining to them what a winch was and I had to hang up in the end)

When I was young (I vaguely remember that!) I had an ex-military (RAF) Series 2 which was insured through A C Miles as a classic Military Vehicle. IIRC I had limited mileage at about 10k and it cost me £69 fully comp - where I'd been quoted over £500 everywhere else for third party only. IIRC it had to be over 25 years old too - but these days that gets you quite a modern vehicle.

The only negative is you didn't accumulate any no-claims - but these days, I think NCD is a scam and doesn't exist! To the extent that many quotes for my 110 were lower without NCD than with 10 years protected - as without it they offered a 'new policy discount' instead!

Might be worth a look for something like that, even if it means swapping vehicle!

interesting point Si, i have just changed provider having been with the NFU for 15years or so with several 6 policies it seems they didnt want my business any more.

i digress, moving to a new company with no no claims was cheaper than having 6+ yrs.! i now run a fleet policy which was the same price as what the NFU wanted for the 110 alone

on reflection i haven't just changed i changed 12mths ago, time just went quick that all!

True, but I think it's still quite relevant to young drivers and what they pay. A couple of years insurances with NCD will result in a drastically reduced premium, insurance with an accident and no NCD not so much...

As stated, this is a must-read.....

Sometimes worth adding an oldish yet careful driving old f**t to your policy as named driver, provided they can be reasonably plausibly added as potential drivers, eg father mother etc. Does bring premiums down

Adding mum or dad as a named driver knocked about £120 off mine :)

When I bought my 90, at 19... Adding both my parents saved me £400 on my policy! More than they were paying for their two cars combined!!
