  1. I looked all over the various FL1 courtesy cars I was given to find the up and down seat adjuster. Never found it to this day. Oddly though didn't have the problem with a fester hire car
  2. Your comment about tyres just reminded me of a problem I had with mine, many years ago. It was fitted with BF Goodrich AT tyres and I had a horrible steering problem, Turned out that one of the tryes had a fault, didn't notice it till I removed the wheel and rolled it along the road. The tyre was severely distorted and at the point of the distortion, badly worn, so much so that the steel cords were breaking up and coming out through what was left of the tread
  3. I found something similar with the original Freelander, I had to crick my neck to see through the windscreen comfortably and I am a positively stumpy 5' 9" I am guessing here but I have the feeling that the ewok is a mistress's car in much the same way as the Merc SL

Though Hobsons of Louth are showing stock on NTC2263 http://www.hobsonindustries.co.uk It is interesting because I have an earlier V8 with twin tanks, external pump and chassis mounted filter where all the fuel pipes are nylon and mounted in plastic clips which push directly into a selection of holes provided on the chassis top rail If you look up a diesel specialist in yellow pages or similar they might be able to make up the nylon pipes with the necessary bends and fittings
  5. When I attempted that method of unfastening the bolt on the crank pulley. It snapped the breaker bar, like a carrot.
  6. Has it ever had the injectors replaced or serviced? 400,000 KM on one of these engines is nothing. They have a design life of over 400,000 miles. I had over 300,000 miles on mine and apart from a head gasket failure at 212,000 miles, a couple of P gaskets and a couple of inlet manifold gaskets, no problems at all.
  7. Just to add to the debate. Another couple of possible causes are incorrect swivel preload. I had that, replaced all the swivel bearings, set the preload and put it all back together. It was better but not perfect. Turned out there was also some wear in the bushes on one of the radius arms.Changed them et Voila, it was gone
  8. The camshaft turns at half the speed of the engine. So as the post above suggests you might be 180 degrees out

  11. Don't know what could be destroying the rubber but if it has only done 20 miles I would be asking for a replacement from the supplier
  12. A friend went to buy a fester and wanted the cheapest model they did. Salesman was trying to sell her a different model with colour coded mirrors, alloy wheels and various other bits of jewellery. He was a bit crushed when she asked him how much better rear view the colour coded mirrors gave her and was not steel also an alloy? But it has a sunroof madam (and how farking ridiculous is a moon roof?) to which her response was why would I want a car with a hole in the roof?. In the end she got the one with all the added bits because "nobody asks for the base model madam and it will be months before we can get one" but she got it for the base model price. On the subject of breakdowns, A friend was workshop manager at a LR dealership. They had a RR sport which would always go into limp home mode when presented with a hill. They tried all sorts to reproduce the fault (owner was going on his hols with caravan attached etc) In the end they gave him a demo car and said leave it with us while you go on holiday we will have a good look at it. couldn't get it to replicate the fault. Bloke comes back off hols, picks up his car, attaches caravan, he is back within 10 minutes same fault. In the end Land Rover said give him another car and send that one back to the factory we will sort it out. Dealer did as requested and even the factory could not find the problem. Doesn't bode well for the future.
  13. I find that with a lot of modern cars, if I cannot see the badge I cannot tell what they are. Which I suppose shows my level of interest in cars other than my Defender. A friend has just bought a Fraud Ranger(?) and was waffling on about how it had blue tooth and ipod docking and and and. When I asked him about the engine and the oily bits his eyes sort of glazed over and he mumbled something about yes of course it has those things
  14. You end up in a situation like Luton airport had a few years ago when it was closed by a snowfall. It was the first snow they had experienced in 20 years. It makes no sense to have that much money tied up in equipment that is never used and TBH after 20 years of sitting idle probably wouldn't be of much use anyway. Round here there are some roads which are subject to significant snowfall and only vehicles fitted with chains are allowed to use them.
  15. Last time I was in UK I spotted a vehicle that might once have been a defender. Sitting on I think it was 22 inch rims with a thin layer of rubber wrapped around them, oh and they were about 2 feet wide ( I exaggerate but you get the idea) The only question that came to mind was, Why? Even with lowered and stiffened suspension the thing is still a cattle truck, just now it is a cattle truck that is probably even more uncomfortable to drive. It is a bit like that old proverb, "If I was trying to get to there I wouldn't be starting from here"

  17. I don't think it is so much a case of we know best as being annoyed that he has spent a lot of time and effort designing a vehicle and then others come along and make changes to it. Some of the aftermarket changes made to vehicles are dreadful, I don't care how much they cost, they are absolutely dreadful.
  18. No worries, it is easy to mis read or mis interpret the intention behind a post. No offence taken. There is a testimonial on the Turner engineering website about one of their engines running at 7000 rev/min and producing 412BHP at those revs, but is running on a petrol/avgas/toluene mix and is fitted to a dragster. The OP was hoping for 7 - 7.5 which whilst possible one wonders at what cost and really whether it is worth the expense for an engine that will probably be horrible as an every day drive. The RV8 is no silk purse but it is entirely possible to make a sow's ear out of one

I always remember the description somebody gave of a high revving engine. The standard engine would rev to 9,000 but the race engine revved to 10,500. at a cost of about £10 a rev. You should remember that it was originally designed for the American market and having lived there for a couple of years I found that they drive in a very different way to Europeans. I took mine aged 110 with me and when accelerating away from the lights I found I was constantly tripping up over things like Camaros, Chargers, Mustangs and others that were setting off from the lights on tick over, gathering momentum by osmosis rather than acceleration. The speed limits are adhered to with an almost religious fervour, so you see any number of 6, 7 or 8 litre cars trickling along at 55MPH. The majority are not even remotely interested in exploring the performance of their cars, just being able to talk about it is enough and the majority of cars reflect this with lazy engines producing the bulk of the power at lower revs than would be typical for European cars, even those with similar sized engines
  22. With the American origins of this engine it was designed to be low maintenance, hence the lack of valve adjusters to tinker with at a weekend. Thus this engine has never had valve adjustment on it as standard. When you go to what can be done with the engine it can be turned into something quite powerful. There are many things which can be done to it but, as with everything else in life, there are trade offs to be made in the search for more power.   23. That is the standard Land Rover Hydraulic system. The valve clearances adjust themselves and depend on good quality, clean oil and frequent oil changes. Frequent as in every 2,500 miles or so. These engines give their oil a hard life
  24. Thank you for clarifying that for me gentlemen. The engine is a V8. The wiring harness is a military item which came from autosparks at a silly cheap price. Lots of fun removing items intended to stop things from working and trying to decipher the non standard wiring colours. Grey/brown for indicators and similar pleasant surprises
