  1. The spring on the pedal of 300tdi TD5 makes a significant difference. I fitted a 300 Tdi pedal and spring to my V8 and i can now press the clutch pedal down with my thumb
  2. Hobsons of Louth are showing 17 in stock, 4 used and 13 new www.thepart.com
  3. Typically the back box doesn't do much in the way of silencing, it just removes some of the resonant frequencies. I removed mine, on a V8, and the sound didn't get any louder but it had a different note to it. With a straight through exhaust fitted it isn't just how much noise you are subjected to but how much you affect those around you, it might be quite an issue for them. A friend lives in harrogate wherein there are any number of german and italian cars fitted with gobshyte exhausts. The noise gets quite irritating, quite quickly
  4. Just use the old girl for towing a GKN rapier trailer, usually overloaded with logs, occasional bit of muddy stuff getting in, around and out of the wood yard but nothing serious. I thought the number referred to the tensile strength of the bolt as in the amount of load it could take, in tension, before catastrophic failure?
  5. Yes that was inc VAT, with the 3.2 engine and all the options they offered for that particular model
  6. I just played around on Ford's web site building and pricing a Ranger and with all the bells and whistles I got it to £34,164 Which to be honest is an absolutely outrageous price for a vehicle of any description. I imagine the japanese pick ups are broadly similar in price speciification so I would hazard a guess that Land Rover's base model will come in just under that sort of price. No doubt time will tell
  7. That is entirely possible I have been driving them since my first outing in a series 1 when i was 13. I have strayed occasionally into Citroens and Love the Traction Avant. I like the upright seating position of a Defender and don't find it too noisy, then again mine is a V8. Indeed as far as bean counters are concerned the bottom line is everything. The perfect vehicle needs to be cheap, have minimal servicing needs for the first 3 years of its life and after that who cares if subsequent users have a vehicle which has had 1 oil change service in 3 years? Jeep are lucky in that they have a HUGE home market which is pretty Xenophobic a lot of the time, hence the success of "hardly able to" motorcycles. When I lived there I think I saw one other Defender (yes I took mine with me and could have sold it for a LOT of money) in something like 3 years, but typically saw 10-15 wranglers every day and no they weren't always the same vehicles even though I was living in a "village"
  8. So the 12.9 I used for my NATO hitch are a bit of overkill then?
  9. "The problem is the name Defender makes people think of a utilitarian vehicle because let's face it, the Defender was never comfortable." Err beg to differ, having driven any number of relatively new hire cars, I find mine ancient 110 far more comfortable to drive than any of them. One in particular sticks in my mind because I seriously thought I would never be able to walk again, the VW golf blue motion. No idea what engine was in it other than the gutless one. But there wasn't one of them that I would even consider using for a long journey. How long do I mean by long? 1,200 miles in a day, yes it was a long-ish day and there were 2 of us driving, holding a reasonably steady 85MPH. A tank of petrol lasted roughly 2 hours and we swapped over every time we filled up But to get back to the point. Realistically how many of the people responding here have bought a new Defender in the last what 5 years? We aren't the target market. I imagine the number of enthusiasts who buy, or bought, a new Defender is a vanishingly small proportion of the vehicles sold
  10. Quite like the look of the variant with Queenie sat in it
  11. Just out of boredom I looked up new Defender and a whole host of articles popped up. https://www.carwow.co.uk/news/land-rover-defender-price-specs-and-release-date-1819 http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-land-rover-defender-already-testing-roads-ahead-2018-launch http://www.caranddriver.com/features/2018-land-rover-defender-25-cars-worth-waiting-for-feature
  12. Apparently Drew Bowler died on Monday February 6th
  13. There is a manual for water leaks on the defender (surprise!) It is called the "water ingress manual" and can be found relatively easily with a search. Tells you where to look and what the fix is
  14. If somebody is doing a rebuild it might be worth their while to get a flight with somebody like sleazy jet to buy a suitcase full of the smaller bits. Though not necessarily with prices like this. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENUINE-UNIPART-INNER-WHEEL-BEARING-LAND-ROVER-SERIES-LIGHTWEIGHT-GHB162-/161798548217?hash=item25abf1eaf9 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NOS-GENUINE-LAND-ROVER-THERMOSTAT-74-C-2-25L-DIESEL-PETROL-ENGINES-P-NO-532453-/152020024963?hash=item2365197e83
  15. i must have spent too many years around the army but I think Bronze green is a lovely colour
  16. Forgetting that the later transfer boxes are cable operated rather than by a selection of rods and levers
  17. Maybe we should return to the old ways of policing where a swift kick up the fundament, or the lightest of beatings with a truncheon, served to remind people that the police were not amused by their activities? On the subject of miscreants being made to work to pay their debt to society, I lived in USA for a while (a murder every night and 2 a night at weekends in the local city) where the people who committed lower level crime could be seen doing just the sorts of jobs described above. How could you tell? Bright orange overalls with the something like "I am a criminal" on the back, in BIG letters. Typically being supervised by either a police officer or Sheriff's deputy, naturally said custodian of the law would be carrying enough firepower to invade a small country
  18. depends on how long their life is intended to be presumably?
  19. if it is just the offf side lights I would look at the fuses again. I had a similar problem last year and while the fuse looked OK I changed it just because and that fixed the problem. Under closer examination the fuse had failed but it was difficult to spot even with the fuse out of its holder and in bright daylight. Though that might just be my eyes. The fault with the switch might have sent a spike through the system
  20. you can use a whole array of engine oils in the LT85. 10W/30 10W/40 10W/50 15W/40 15W/50 20W/40 or 20W/50 In winter, one of the thinner oils might be more beneficial though the manual suggests that 20/40 and 20/50 can be used down to -10. If it has not been fitted long and is an Ashcroft overhaul why not contact them? they give 12 month unlimited mileage warranty
  21. Having watched a few episodes of police interceptors last time I was in UK I am surprised the police even bother TBH. The number of vehicles chased and caught in flagrant breach of any number of laws, including things like being full of drugs and stolen, or stolen and parked on somene's driveway with fake IDs and the keys inside the kitchen drawer. Typical response from CPS? No charges brought, vehicles impounded and drugs impounded but the culprits walk away with no comeback on them at all? I appreciate that they don't give the full facts of each case on such programmes but that just makes you wonder why the police even bother? Especially when you also hear stories about, I think it was Sunderland, places where people are being fined £1000 for not picking up their dog's excrement.
  22. The 2 occupants ran from the vehicle after the crash. I am surprised they were still alive
  23. If you look in this thread there is a link to a list of military Land Rovers. If you then read the details of the 2nd vehicle on the list it is referred to as a Land Rover Mk 6B as are others in the same document. Although that 2nd vehicle listed is quite interesting in that it had the R380 gearbox fitted in 1990. Whereas it was not fitted to Civilian Land Rovers until they were fitted with the 300Tdi in 1994 Whilst a bit like reading the phone directory there are some interesting vehicles on the list
  24. Don't know about the RR parts but the series 1 parts they are getting from Places like Dunsfold, Len Jackson and er the military
  25. i went on the factory tour to see them doing the series 1 and the guide reckoned that each rebuild was costing between 60,000 and 80,000 pounds depending on the level of work involved and parts required. However he didn't say what price they had been sold for. The initial batch of 25 vehicles sold out within days.
