  1. I recently had reason to call KAM to enquire about the different halfshafts available, I am a stubborn old git who likes to do things that others say don’t make sense. When I called I spoke to Steve the Sales Manager and although my purchase would only be a couple of hundred pounds he suggested that I spoke to the MD Kevin. This made me feel a little humbled as during the following conversation with Kevin I could here all sorts of clangs and metallic noises from the other end. As I was looking for a specific length of halfshaft, Kevin had gone up into the store and was searching through old dusty stock. During the conversation he talked about a customer / supplier whose name I did not know but my guess whom it was, was confirmed when he said that I would know him better as NAS90. (Apparently you will be told that they have a solution to your halfshaft request??) As a result of NAS90’s and to a minor degree my questions, Kevin and Steve have discovered an unspecified amount of old stock for the pneumatic lockers they made donkey’s years ago, this includes an odd halfshaft or two, pipe work etc. and other bits that I can’t remember due to senility. Some of this stuff was made about 12 years ago. So if you have the old locker system and need parts or spares then I suggest that you call them as it may not be made again. As for my part, a site visit is called for which Kevin is very helpful with. Having seen the ads for KAM I was astounded that they had the same interest in the sport as they must have had at the very beginning of the business, I had figured that as KAM had focused on a specific product range that they would not be interested in messing around trying to help for something that does not directly fit with in their range. Thanks guys. I hope others have found the same helpfulness that I did. Marc.
  2. Damn, Just as I find an answer it is maybe too late!
  3. Same as this my garage MOT's loads of LR 4x4s and does them 1 axle ata time without taking props off. Once told a garage that my Series 1 V8 was perm 4x4 as old drums don't pull straight. The garage had a floor mounted test system using some mechanical method and sat a frightend apprentice in the passenger seat. 1955 LR V8 no roof no door tops no seatbelts told me to drive rather quickly towards a row of new cars and hit the brakes! Poor bloke s%*t himself but it passed
  4. Wow Nige, I know that I said on the other thread that there looked to be room for lots of weld on the gear but there's certainly more on there now! Pinned Vee cut and Tig'd If you mate breaks that lot then he ought to buy a tank! Marc,
  5. Hi welcome. Cant answer the auto box question, but as an owner of a Series 1 V8 why change to auto? If you want to trial it surely you want to stay with a manual and possibly a Series 1 transfer box? If Ashtrans is around he will give you all the auto box information you can handle and some more! Marc.
  6. Thanks, to both replies. However this is the one I needed. It is really helpful to know that I need to use the old type as I want Long Splines on the Long Halfshafts front and rear. I take it that they are still making the old ones Marc.
  7. As the title really. A suggestion has been made to my by an engineer which is dependant upon the length of the splines on a KAM Locking Diff halfshaft. What I need is a kind knowledgable person to tell me how long the diff end splines are on a KAM 24 spline LR 90/RRC halfshaft where the locking collar is fitted. I believe that this will be the long halfshaft and I assume that the fron and rear will be the same? Hope that this makes sense? Marc.
  8. Hi Nige, So they were cutting corners then? Looking at the photos it doesn't look like they were short of space to fit the weld into? Can't wait to see the new work photos. Marc.
  9. I've got a Road Angel Adventurer. Waterproff Memory Mapping Bloody expensive compared to the rest carp Sat Nav Absolutely no Map updates so out of date before you even buy it! But then I bought it for the good bits. Marc.
  10. Well done. The more I hear about MJ and MS the more I am considering it. Marc.
  11. I did wonder if this was personal or even an "anti" loonatic trying to cause a problem to get headlines? I guess the personal suggestion is most likely. Marc.
  12. If this topic is out of line or OT? please Lock, Stop or Bar(rell) it. In this months Total Off Topic magazine there was a letter by a ALRC member who had a well known sounding name stating that his son's Trialer was vandalised post Scruntineering and pre event (presumably the night before)? Apparently a brake line was cut and other less dangerous damage effected presumably in an attempt to remove him from the list of competitors. Obviously this is outragous and lethal behavour and he has contacted the Police, but has our sport become that competative? Surely the Nationals is a place of peace and Brown Ale? A place where like minded people meet to compete in a friendly atmosphere. If the vehicle had been driven without the damage being discovered the possibilities don't bare thinking of! Does anyone know if the facts are as presented in the letter as I am completely astounded? Marc
  13. I haven't read the article but found the thread very interesting. Thanks for posting Pugwash. Some think he was guilty by the news article (sorry but thats what they wanted). Most are concerned as to how easily it all escalated to a prison term and how it could be them. Les I really found your comment honnest and helpful. I have been in a position where an oncoming car driver had to put his car sideways to avoid hitting me though not speeding as he had not seen me. My view was wow what good driving skills, others would think hooligan, most would be terrified as was your person. I fully understand your feelings afterwards. Interestingly for me I have had a number of arguments with other drivers when I use the correct lane and they cut me up and stop to blame me. It is all about perception I guess. When is following the rules not safe? One sobering thought. It seems that as 10p felt that he could have been slower as he may have mis-read the road, however the motorcyclist may not have thought about what he was doing. Only 10p put his hand up and lost the right to defend his actions. Before anyone claims that I am anti bikes I own a Kwak 1000 It is worrying that the leaway for mistakes is becoming non existant. I don't condone bad driving and I am as guilty as most, new laws announced today make the penalties even more strict. This is a very sobering thread, again thanks for starting it. Marc.
  14. Sorry I don't get it. A LR is made from a kit of parts. If you use std parts it does not mean it is modified? My Series 1 is down as a CKD (Completely Knocked Down - i.e. it was not fully asssembled when it left the factory) by the chassis number. Does this mean that if I added a roof it was modified, I don't think so! Insurance companies are lazy and only interested in shopping boxes driven by a stamp collector. Well thats got that off my chest Marc.
  15. Hi, I don't know anything about emigrating to Aus, it is on my option list so this is a very intersting topic with really good information. If we went I would want to tave my Series 1 V8 and possibly the Hybred. The Ser 1 does not have seat belts at the moment but probably will once I put a rollcage on it so I guess thi8s would not be a problem though I am not sure about the glass? I have heard a couple of things from friends in the past that I will add to the mix for what they are worth. My ex boss is an Ozzie living in Perth, according to him a new Labour law was passed that gives the employer the right to sack any employee without notice or reason! The other comment is from another mate who used to run a business in the UK exporting Jags to the US. One day the NY dockers dropped a Jag off the crane and tottaled it. The shipping insurance only paid up half the insured value for the car as they assume that you have over estimated it for a quick profit. Don't mean to be down, just what I heard. Good luck you if you go and I hope that you will update your progress. Marc.
  16. Make them do the work. After all they have ripped of the Insurance for a huge amount of money and still not performed an average job. Companies still think that accidents are an excuss to print money. Am I cynical do you think? Marc.
  17. The two ropes shown in these posts have very different uses. The first is Rope for towing. The second is platted for Kinetic Recovery (snatching) with high loading on all of the relevant parts (Crossmember, Tow hitch rope etc.) This may well turn in to a bun fight about snatch (ooh err) recovery! Stands back and waits Marc.
  18. To be honest I'am not sure, Steve would probably know as he raced more than I did. It is quite possible that you are correct as racers that serious would not want a centre diff as it is a weakness. With 2 x Hi Range I presume that this would spread the load across the 2 sets of gears equally?I am sure that Dave (ashtrans) would also know.A mate and I just played with road legal racers. MarcPS.Although have not had much dealing with Dave Ashcroft from what I have seen on here and his PM to me , he has the same degree of helpfulness as Ian.A truely great family who are happy to help even though it may not bring financial benefit.Sorry licking over.
  19. Thanks Bill, You have again delivered the goods I have a bolt the correct size so I just have to sort out a peice of tube. I've another old Box so I neet to decide how badly damaged the casing is on this one to see if I need to change them. From what you've said before I doubt that I can reuse this box but I will soon find out. I guess the reason why my book of lies says the box has to be removed first is cos they did not want to explain how to do it! Steve's earlier comment about removing the Low Ratio gear explains why Ashtrans dad used to sell a double High Ratio conversion for Comp Safari LT95s. Thanks Bill I knew I could rely on you for a response. Cheers, Marc.
  20. Well I finally got to open it up. Lots of gold (Bronze) dust inside and deep joy lots of melted plastic. Checked everythng and yup the Low ratio gear is welded to the shaft which has spun in the casing. I have managed to move the gear on the shaft but as said above it probably won't come out. I looked at my book of lies and it says that the Intermediate shaft can only be removed once the box is off the car. Can anyone advise if this is true? If it can be removed how? My book does not even show it. One thing I saw once inside the TF box. I was worried about the amount of backlash on the centre diff when locked. It turns out it is built in!! The slliding Dog gear has half as many teeth as on the diff and the matching teeth on the front output shaft has half as many teeth as the slliding dog. This means that although the sliding gear is a good fit on the diff the output shaft can rotate back and forth. Marc.
  21. Some years ago I saw Phil Bashalll driving one at a show in Long Valley. As it came from behind me the first I knew of it was the horrendous racket the tracks made. No chance of sneaking up on the enemy then Not too supprisingly Phil had ear deefenders on!
  22. Welcome, I can't help with your problems, but I do envy you working in Costa Rica. I noticed a few RR when over there. Marc.
  23. I have seen these used in anger in a company office underground car park. The office did not have enough floor space to house all the workers cars so they put in around 8 of these. PS I realy got interested until I realised that it was an Alpine and not a Tiger in the garage still looks nice though. Marc.
  24. Hi Eugen To be honest my sliders are not fixed very strongly and possibly work due to the fact that they are butted up to the side of the chassis! The front fixing is the same as your photo the rear has a bracket welded to the chassis and a clevis bolt to hold the slider in place. The previous owner built them but they have worked well as he was a regular RTV winner for quite a few years in this motor. If/when I rebuild the motor I would consider something that transfers the forces better. In my case this could simply be a flat spreader plate welded againt the side of the chassis with a stronger mounting bracket on it. Your best bet is to wait for an adult to make an engineering based answer, I could only observe from the photo I don't have the knowledge to offer guaranteed design. Sorry. Marc.
  25. On Topic but slight move? When SVA'd with a 1980 V8 fitted, what Tax group based on emmissions? I am assuming Commercial SVA as this seems the only one it might pass so is it applicable? looking at the first answer above, does the MOT look at the age of the engine fitted or the date of SVA Basically I ams concerned that if I rebuild my Hybred into a new chassis and susspension etc and SVA it I will end up in a expensive Tax class due to the engine. Second dumb question. Why doesn't Les's Axle 1 weight plus Axle 2 weight equal the Gross Weight? Cheers if someone knows the answer. Marc
