  1. the one on the right was taken out of an engine that had been for a swim... most of the time they can bend enough that you have to cut the con rod up in the bore to remove them
  2. How have/could you modify the stock pump? sounds interesting.....
  3. Hi all, Need to get my screen replaced on my 96 300tdi D1 thanks to the large bolder that at truck launched at it yesterday (knew i should have taken the company car but thats karma for you ). My disco its a base poverty spec machine.. so my question if i get a heated screen fitted how much hassle is it to retro fit all the extra bits needed to drive the heated screen? any one on here done this?
  4. I use a Myford ML7 dont really have the room for any thing else. but i would go as big as you can. never had any training I just try and read up on techniques from internet first and then have a go.. some times it shows when I mess up some thing that I have been machining/turning for hours.... but then thats all part of the fun wouldn't be with out one now. I use my lathe for doing this sort of thing...
  5. You can make a puller for the crank sprocket, the holes in it from memory are m8's... the cam is some times a bit of a bugger, a bearing puller would prob work best if have one, I have been able to get them off using screw drivers/drifts until i can get a 2/3 legged puller on it. hope this helps
  6. If you are going to compete then i think the regs will need you to cover the water pipes if/where they are running through the cab.
  7. Thats fine if your just using your winch for play day recoveries. But in some events where you have to hang your truck from its winch i wouldn't recommend it. I have seen a band new ebay winch rope snap on its first use more than once....
  8. I case any ones interested from their blog... Cant see myself being there this time....
  9. isnt every thing made in this part of the world these days I guess you would not be able to beat the price on the stuff that is similar to the terrafirma bits, as due to the amount of units allmakes/terrafirma have made/sell, and then there is shipping and import duty etc... But if some one was to import a container full of those nice shiny looking coilovers and bumps it might be worth it
  10. almost definitely if the axles are original just pop a rear half shaft out if that unsure..
  11. Thats Bad luck what did the garage say about the belt... did it look like it needed replacing? did you ask them to check the timing? might be worth having a look at the injectors, or finding a second hand injector pump. hope you get it sorted soon.
  12. I wouldn't wd40 freezes too. this weekend (-17 so i was told) my accelerator cable froze and wd40 made it worse. just had to want for the engine to warm the engine bay enough
  13. yep and it wasn't the last time he ended up like that over the weekend guess training wheels might help
  14. I know where are a few on here that know the site so thought i would share a few images from this weekend in the snow with the j33p club. No door tops and heater made the driving a bit on the cool side. It was cold enough that after going through water the front winch rope turned into a lump of ice so i had to use a kettle to thaw it out and then left unwound on the bonnet where the engine heat just about kept it flexible
  15. Have you check the timing ? cam belt condition? If have found that having the timing spot on and slightly out can have as much a performance difference as tuning the pump up but with less smoke
  16. i cant say that timing is def your problem but it does sound like it and you have pretty much covered every thing else the fact its get worse is because the belt has stretched and so making what was slight miss alignment a bigger one
  17. Its not as hard as it sound esp on a 300tdi as you dont need to remove the water pump.. there are lots of pic guides on here. Your hardest bit will prob be the main crank pulley bolt I needed to use a very big air gun on my 300 the other day as even the beaker bar on the chassis trick wouldn't shift it. special tools are not really needed I keep meaning to machine some timing locking tools up but never get round to it and all ways end u using bolts/drill bits/what ever is to hand... Does the engine miss at all when first reved at a cold start and gut less until the turbo?
  18. 300's and 200's really should not need the glow plugs in this country, well... not on the sunny south coast anyway The symptoms you describe would make me look at the timing and by the sounds of it needing a "good" service when you got it would also make me think about changing the cam belt as part of the course.... hope this help Paul
  19. when was the last time you changed the cam belt? smoke on over run, flat spot on the power when off the turbo, bad mpg, and i bet it misses abit when first starting, and prob takes a bit of cranking to get it going on very cold mornings? I would put my money on your problem being the timing being out... it sound like its slightly retarded and pre fueling paul
  20. quite a few scrap metal places will now no longer take cats.... I guess in a effort to stop the pikeys going down the local NCP with a hacksaw
  21. yep it can sound very bad. its easy done tho if you dont tighten the 13mm lock nut up enough then it works loose when the engines running and it will sound rougher and rougher unitl you have you have to stop. bit of a PITA you have stripped the enigne as 3mins later you could have been on your way if this is/was the problem,
  22. Hard to tell with out hearing it .......but looking at the work you have done would put my money on a rocker has worked loose and is not opening a valve. this can sound pertty bad and if get to the stage where the valve is opening at all then the engine will be very down on power. hope this helps. paul
  23. don't think so..... I try not to open the bonnet if i can get way on that truck
  24. I did the head on my 300 a few months back and fitted MLS gasket, always used the composite before. I think the main thing is that there is no give with the steel gasket so the mating surfaces have to be perfectly flat... make sure the head is skimmed and i gave the block face a good clean up with a scotch pad. I am happy with the MLS gasket as my 300 disco gets flogged mercilessly towing the other truck around so will prob be using MLS gaskets from now on. They should be better as made from metal so are let likely to blow apart. paul
