  1. Awesome - good progress, how much time is there in that welding?
  2. I've used simplycoatings for a number of jobs now, for cellulose and 2k, tins and ready made spray cans. Decent paint and really good customer service. I've sent a couple of parts down for them to scan and they've got really good matches. Just make sure you T-cut the sample you send down so it's a proper example of the original paint colour. 3. Harsh, she's always been pretty "stiff" as I know I'm running harder springs, but I never remember noticing it when I had the big bores installed, I think half the issue is that some of the roads around here are rough as chips.
  4. Marmalade the Land Rover (cb1.com) Why I stretched my Land Rover Someone asked me why I rebuilt my long-wheelbase Land Rover longer than it already was. I came up with the idea when I was trying to hang on to an academic career. I went back from industry (software) to do a postdoc, then some research assistantships while waiting for a lectureship opportunity, and I was expecting that for a life like that Iā€™d have to move every few years, and wanted to make my vehicle big enough to carry all my stuff. Then the economic crisis came in 2008, and I realized there wasnā€™t going to be much chance of sticking to that career (as the supply of contracts was clearly drying up), and went back into commercial work. When I came back into industry at the start of 2011, I was already really keen on the idea of the stretch project, and a couple of years later the chassis got too rusty to get through more MOTs, and so I went ahead with the project, which took about a year of evenings, weekends, and all my holidays for that year. I had originally been thinking of making it 150ā€³ wheelbase (that is, a 110, which it already was, plus another 40ā€³ for the extra axle) but on the way up to Designachassis to sort out the details I realized that a 170ā€³ would be better (that is, a 130 plus an extra 40) as I already had the idea of fitting an electric motor and batteries for the third axle, and this would allow more room for batteries around the chassis. The trailer project is mostly for the joy of engineering, though. I bought the trailer body (a 110 hi-cap rear tub, i.e. the type with a tailgate that reaches across the whole width of it) thinking it would be suitable for the pickup extension, but it was too heavy (much heavier than Marmaladeā€™s own rear tub, which I could just about lift by myself) so I decided to keep it and build a trailer using it. And I like messing with peopleā€™s heads, so the trailerā€™s towing A-frame fits under the pickup extension, and Iā€™ve kept some of the other bits of the tub I made the extension sides from (actually a 109) to make flaps which will cover most of the gap between the trailer tub and the extension, so it will look pretty much like one 9.5metre-ish long vehicle. I plan to do a lot more camping with it (mostly Iā€™ve just done festivals since the rebuild). One of my present projects is an arduino-controlled manifold to split the hot air four ways from an Eberspacher D7L, the four ways being front, middle and rear of the vehicle, and up to the tent, so Iā€™ll be ready for pretty much all-weather camping. 5. I wonder what power plant its got, hopefully something decent as it would take a fair bit to get it moving. Looks like A Disco 200tdi... brave.
  6. It just looks like another front door with a home made top to it imho.
  7. If it isnt photo-shopped its got a crazy wheel base, I cant find anything that long in comparison this is the longest I found and I still think its short in comparison. Being an A reg its an early registration which ties to the unpainted windscreen frame.
  8. You've inspired me, R-Tech are having a clear out so I've just purchased a discounted plasma cutter. Should help on the old grinding/ cutting time. Hows the welding going?
  9. I ran some dynabeads for about 2-3 years as I was struggling getting some wheels to balance. They where perfect, did there job and when I changed the tires last I kindly asked the garage to try recover them and I got them back in a Tupperware box, looking the same as when I put them in, no sign of wear or breakdown. Quite impressed with them really in the end. FYI - I installed them through the valve rather than them being installed with the tyre.
  10. Good shout - gigglepin have Fox and Old man emu at +2". Emailed to see availability.
  11. Gigglepin - I'll have a look! šŸ˜€ - half the problem is I'm pish at searching I think!
  12. Just bouncy bouncy, could be my tolerance to it has waned with my age!?! still doesnt change the fact, its got pretty cheap shocks just now. So I was thinking I could get away with using std height shocks... but then I went and measured the normal extension length I saw a few specs for standard shocks and it was only giving 20-30mm over 530mm for the "top out" length of the shock - which I felt was a bit close for comfort.
  13. Hi folks, I'm looking for some inspiration. The ride in my truck leaves something to be desired - some of these Yorkshire back roads are super bumpy 200tdi 90, Brownchurch roof rack, spare wheel on rear door, inny/outty role cage, Superwinch hunky bumper/winch so she's not empty but carrying some built in weight.. Springs FRONT - DA4202 - Britpart +40mm front springs Shocks FRONT - Standard Munro Springs REAR - Red/white RRC (HD police) springs with a 50mm spacers Shocks REAR - Britpart SuperGAz I ran the above spring set-up for years with Terrafirma Big bore shocks and can't really say I had any complaints with the drive/handling. - when I did a spring refresh in 2019 I did a like for like swap on the springs and binned the big bores and threw in what I had sitting around - which is whats in there now. So yes the "Britpart" in the title is probably half the problem... So in an effort to improve the situation I was thinking I could put some decent dampers under her and this is where I'm struggling. I'm pretty happy with the ride height just now as it works. But I cant find any decent manufacturers of shocks (Bilsteing, Old man Emu, Fox... )that will cater for the ~+40mm extra ride height I'm running (which in reality is less due to the extra load installed), everything I've seen is pointing me to either Terrafirma or Britpart... am I missing something? I went and measured where the shocks are now and front and back are sitting at about 520mm (normal length). Any help appreciated Cheers Mav
  14. I'd take that as a win, that flange looks really tight, I'm guessing you annealed the alu before you hammered it back, did you have to do any intermediate annealing or did you just go for it?
  15. Thats Awesome - glad you got the head back together too!
  16. How do you rate the tent, looking for something classy that the missus wont mind living in.
  17. Thats where mine went last time, the gaskets are really pretty hairy thin around those water holes - ironically the holes dont actually need to be there as they dont go anywhere in the head.
  18. TIG'ing thick alu is pretty satisfying (as a newbie TIG'er) still find thin Alu stuff pretty hard work. It will look ace when you've zipped it all up.
  19. I hate running out of gas. I started stocking a 2nd bottle for the big projects, - I hate having an unplanned stoppage. I bought a lovely tig machine just before I moved house, and its been in storage the past 2 years, rather hankering to have a space to play again, I love metal gluing.
  20. I've had a small steering wheel for the past 10 years. - conversely I have long legs, and used to find the driving position a bit cramped. A smaller wheel doesn't effect your driving experience.
  21. I was just looking through some files and found this, I'm not sure I've seen it on here before so here it is for anyone's use. Mav Defender Service checklist.pdf
  22. I remember reading that LR did produce a few trucks with Alu bulkheads not sure if they where S1 or S2's.
