  1. Agree that P38 do not rot just look at the quantity of body shells and chassis that are for sale on Ebay. The brakes are exactly the same as a Disco 2. Same disks, pads and calipers I know because I have swapped bits around. The Air suspension should be the same as a classic because the LSE was used as a test bed during the design phase of the P38. The V8's on the pre 2000 models are virtually the same but the 4.6's have obviously been stretched close to the limit. The BECM is a major issue. I had that go on my 2000 model which, because of my difficult financial circumstances, caused me to run a Mondeo for 9 months before I bought the Disco. I swore I would never have another P38 but that was then and this is now.
  2. Thanks there are three green ones all with a trace colour. Which one?
  3. I need a cable to bridge into for my hands free kit. Needs to be live when the ignition is on sorry if I was misleading.
  4. Cos if you have a Land Rover you need another when it breaks down
  5. Can some knowledgeable person tell what colour cable off the steering binacle on a P38 Range Rover is ignition on live?
  6. Dunc I bought my Disco 2 last yes with 137k on the clock. Unfortunately I bought a pup because the chassis was rotten but I have redone that and replaced most of the suspension and the brakes so it should run for years. I had at the MOT in May 150k on the clock so I am doing about 20k per year which is why I bought the P38 to give me a second car to split the mileage and give me an alternative vehicle when the Disco had problems meaning I did not need to rush any repairs. That way I have the best of both worlds and can choose my vehicle depending on the time of day
  7. I bought a second hand one off ebay which did the trick. If you wait until it collapses you will need to replace the ABS sensor as well. Verey easy job to replace if you know what you are doing with a spanner.
  8. Yes my TD5 is a manual I avoided the auto because of the fuel and power issues. I only use my P38 at weekends and so far it has not been a problem sitting in the driveway.
  9. I disagree too. My TD5 runs like a train and around town I get 26 and on a run can get 30+. Also it is no more noisey than my classic. My P38 runs very well and once I find an LPG kit it will be used as much as the Disco to bring the mileage of the two to a more reasonable annual amount.
  10. Before you do it check with Customs and Excise. I cannot see any reason why, despite what I said above, it should be any different from cooking oil. The situation I saw on TV was a shady character disguising red diesel.
  11. Dunc I bought the P38 as a spare car. The theory being I would have one Land Rover running if one broke down and the ability to tow the dead one with the living one. I must admit I do like the P38 very much but the first one I had got electrical gremlins and I was not in a position to get them fixed. Then the neighbours ridge tile smashed the roof and that was the end. I bought the current p38 on a whim when I saw one with the right colour scheme and in need of an engine. (I had an excellent block from my first one.) I havw done 1000 miles in 3 months and always puts a smile on my face. The Disco had a chassis rebuild and cost me a fortune in the last three months that one has covered 3500 miles.
  12. Dunc I have both a P38 4.6 and a Disco 2 TD5. The TD5 I feel is more reliable and less likely to go wrong, the P38 is really a toy which I use on occasions just to drive something a bit different. The P38 is very refined even, as mine is, when it is running rough. I would say however that the TD5 is closer to the classic than the P38.
  13. Customs and Excise. Scammers put old engine oil into their tanks to hide red diesel saw it once on one of the cop reality shows.
  14. FF I had an 05 TD4 out of the box. If I remember right it was only available on the Autos for some reason.
  15. FF That is seriously impressive. I know my way round Classic, P38 Discovery parts some of those in great detail but when it comes to the wiring I now know who to ask. The next one will be my P38 no doubt.
  16. FF We all should. But if you told me that off the top of your head I am seriously impressed.
  17. Spot on sorry for the pun. Job done and working properly now just waiting for it to go dark. Thanks for the assistance
  18. I have fully wired in my spot lamps through relevant fuses and relays and now have one last connection to make to the hi beam switch. To avoid stripping out the steering column shrouds does anyone know what colour wire switched on the high beam. I just need a positive feed when on high beam so I can wire it to the switch on my dash. Thanks
  19. Ok so assuming then that the motor is U/S as I am not getting the clunk is the motor the same unit fitted to Pre 2000 model year as it s to post 200 model year. I have a working motor from my scrapped 2000 model year so if I can I will fit it.
  20. As the title says select neutral keeps appearing on my message centre. I know this is the Hi Low selector so I select neutral and it beeps but does not go into low even after a long wait. I then select Hi again and beeping continues but does not go into high. Invariably I get bored of the wait and select drive and everything is fine for a while. Can anybody confirm the problem? I suspect that the gear selection motor is knackered.
  21. Have pulled a Range Rover P38 on a Trailer from Oxford to Glasgow in my TD5 manual and did not have a problem. Nice car and pulled really well. Put on cruise most of the time. Sat at 55 occasionally went to 60 but was not in a rush. As for the torpedo tanks under the car. I had some on a classic range rover and went off roading. Dropped the tank directly on a big rock while off roading and had no problems at all. If you think that the tanks are built to withstand huge amounts of gas pressure.
  22. Lewis Now that you say it is does make a lot of sense. Basically the newer the vehicle and the less work then the lower the running costs.
