  1. Glad to hear the forum is valuable to you and thank you for the donation
  2. Teddies and prams please transfer to http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=33545
  3. Yes that is the kickdown cable, can't help with the problem though
  4. Its a normal characteristic of a Td5 auto, yes. Should stop once you are at a standstill if it is the noise I think it is.
  5. This has been split from the original topic at the request of a member (not any of the above contributors) as it has, as pointed out, absolutely phuck all to do with the original post about Td5 service intervals and will shortly be moved to International.
  6. No.... the correct procedure is (cut & paste from 300Tdi Def workshop manual): Fill through expansion tank until radiator is full, with level in expansion tank the same as radiator. NOTE: Care should be taken to avoid excess coolant spillage. Fit plastic plug in radiator. Add a further 1 litre (1.76 pints) of coolant into expansion tank and allow to settle. Refit expansion tank cap and thermostat housing plug. Run engine at idle speed for 5 minutes. Switch off engine and allow to cool. Check that coolant in expansion tank is level with top of indicator post. Top up if necessary.
  7. Yep. I always carry two when venturing off into the wilderness, because if you DO hit something like that, chances are unless you are turning it will get both tyres on that side because by the time you hear the bang from the front tyre it is too late... I have only ever wiped out two tyres on one obstruction once, but I don't like walking
  8. I used hammerite once and it all fell off so the next time I use a satin black aerosol. Don't use gloss as it looks like a tarts handbag
  9. I should think a look at the wiring diagram for the car would give some clues. AFAIK all it needs is the engine to be running and a signal from the temp sensor inside the grille that ambient temp is below 5 deg, but IIRC that is just a switch. You may find that all the heater needs is to "see" 12V on a control line and it will fire up, though I don't know how much power it uses, might be an issue if used regularly. Purely speculation but a gander at the wiring diagram would tell you whether it is going to be easy or difficult - I don't have a copy at home or I would have a look.
  10. Some are stronger than others but to be honest if you hit something solid, pretty much any tyre you are likely to put on a Land Rover is going to tear the sidewall. Old broken off rusty fencing standards are a "favourite" here - usually snapped off 2-4 inches above ground level, often with sharp points, hidden in the long white grass and will total any tyre instantly.
  11. You must be nearly on the doorstep as it is 576ms from here
  12. The floor is about the only bit that doesn't make much noise
  13. see here http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=3572&hl=
  14. If you do a search the subject has been covered on here before. I have used Pioneer TS-44's for rear speakers in Defenders in the past, though if you are fussy about hi-fi sound they are probably not the right choice, they are more "fill in" to the front ones but if front speakers are upgraded the overall effect is not bad.
  15. Mechanically injected ~3.0 litre engine with a variable vane turbo Six speed gearbox plus two speed transfer box, torque biasing centre diff which can also be fully locked Galvanised ladder chassis with proper reinforcement for towing points front and rear Discovery 2 suspension layout, coil springs with live axles Anti roll bars with some sort of quick disconnect arrangement for off road use Four pin diffs both ends with factory option of axle difflocks Bolt-together bodywork design to allow for the same "customisability" of a Defender and easy damage repair Good ground clearance Sensible factory fit range of off road tyre options Engine PTO facility for driving hydraulic winch pumps
  16. I've only ever seen one break and that was where some numpty in green trousers had fitted a 200Tdi rocker setup on a 300Tdi engine which was probably not all that bright an idea
  17. MOG put his big clumpy administrator boots on and gave it a right royal kick up the jacksie
  18. There seems to be considerable possibility of personal injury if skating along a taut winch line
  19. Found some fibre washers (couldn't find either the tight tap washers or the Dowty type, but found some that were a loose sliding fit on the thread) and it all seems to be leakproof now. Ta for the info
  20. See the tech archive for details of the spider but no it is not likely to have any bearing on the fault you have. The switch is a possible culprit as sometimes they go a bit funny.
  21. I believe it can be made to fit, look in the tech archive I think there is information in there about it. If you want to do a proper job though, you are better off doing it properly and getting something like Ashcrofts strengthened CVs etc. Personally I have never found a problem with the strength of the standard drivetrain components, a lot of how much you break depends on the connection between the seat and the steering wheel
  22. If its under tension it will be near dry anyway - but as Ralph says the original use of such ropes is for boats and if the rigging all snapped the first time it went out in wintery conditions it would be a bit of a design flaw
  23. Yep, 'fraid that is your problem then, if the dog teeth were facing in the input gear teeth will have bridged both sets of teeth on the intermediate and you know the rest The good news is that it is a mistake that you only make once
  24. I would jack up each wheel on a trolley jack and spin it by hand, I reckon you will find a tyre is bulged out of shape (wires letting go inside), may not be obvious just looking at it parked but you will soon see if it is not round when you spin it - easiest is if you get somebody else to spin it for you (at about 1 revolution per second) and you look at it end-on i.e. from directly behind or in front of the tyre. Otherwise perhaps a bent wheel, can't think of too much else that would make a vehicle do that. Needless to say if a tyre is doing that, change it immediately, as it could go boom any time!
  25. it will make it go faster or use less fuel depending on weight of right foot and yes it is but only if you talk to the fuelling in the injector pump otherwise all it will do is make the engine take even longer to warm up which is not great on a 200
